<<Anything on Majette, FL ? This is or was a small mill village near Millville, FL, now absorbed within Panama City, Bay Co., FL.>> No, Don I do not find Majette listed in Bay Co, Fla. The only name close was Murfee - 6 miles west of Vicksburg on Hy. 388 at Burnt Mill Creek. Sorry, Glenda. To James and all others, Yes, James is correct when he stated there are usually no building to be found in Fla's "Ghost Towns". For those of you who are not familiar with this climate an abandoned wooden building will not last very long and the most you would probably find would be piling or some foundations if that. Those found today in the west are probably still standing because of the drier climate. However, if in searching for relatives past, having the forgotten names of communties, mill towns, post offices and etc, would be good to have at least known where these places existed. James Warnke was a noted author of books on Fla. But as I said before I personally cannot verify his findings. I am sure there are many more "places" in Fla that were not listed, past and present. My offer still stands, if anyone would like those "towns" for other counties, pls let me know. Glenda.
I added more cemeteries to the Master Index... There are now 63,000+ entries in the index... The new cemeteries are inWashinton Co. and the Ponce de Leon City Cemetery in Holmes Co. Hi everyone! Does anyone have any information on the schools in Jackson County, FL in 1840? According to the 1840 Jackson County, FL census Mrs Whichard's household consisted of: male 5-10 one, female 5-10 two, female 20-30 one, total four, acadamies & grammer schools one, no. of scholars 25, no. of white persons over 20 who cant read or write 9 Wouldn't this indicate that she was holding school in her house? I would appreciate any information. Nanismith
If someone has the 1920 Florida Census I would appreciate your looking up Charlie/Charley G. Walters in the Sink Creek/Alliance area of Jackson County or perhaps just inside Calhoun County. I would like to know what is listed for the family as well as other Walters that may be near-by. Thanks for your help. Charlie Walters

Altha still has a Mayor... I talked to him abt. 6 months ago because his wife is in charge of the Chipola Cemetery which located in the center of town.. There is a post office, school, city limits, city hall, etc so in any sense of the word it is a town. The actual town would prob. cover about a square mile... My point in this discussion is keep the term in proper prospective and not to think that there are identifiable towns in Jackson Co. that would qualify as "ghost towns" per se. I was in no way implicitly nor explicitly criticizing the listing of the so called "ghost town" except to point out that the author of the book didn't know what he/she was talking about when he/she listed Altha.. Selman in Calhoun Co. has been on the maps for years but I defy anyone to tell me the exact location but it is on the maps... There are others in Jackson Co. that don't appear on maps such as Sunny Hill, Star, Magnolia, etc which are used as place names because of an old school, turpentine still, etc. James James L. James, is Altha still a "town" - I know that it is there and that a fair number of people live there, but is it incorporated as a civic/political entity? If not, that may have contributed to its listing. I grew up in a community outside of Orlando called Orlo Vista that had been a town from the late 1800s until the depression, when it ceased to exist as a legal entity. Folks didn't move, but the town ceased to exist. I agree that doesn't make it a ghost town, but it may be how it shows up on this kind of list. Jack ----- Original Message ----- From: James L. According to the Webter's New World Dictionary, a "Ghost town" is the remains of a deserted town, permanently, esp. for economic reasons. The ghost towns posted for Jackson Co. and Calhoun Co. never were "towns" but mainly communities and they are not deserted. The term is applicable to some towns in the West that still exist today and are total deserted. Whoever came up with the list and published them in a book knew nothing about Jackson or Calhoun Co., Fl. For example, Altha is listed for Calhoun County. Anyone living within the area knows that Altha is presently a good size town and is not deserted... Most of the "towns" listed were/are all communities that were so named because of Navy stores, post offices, or turpentine stills that existed years ago. The old Navy stores, post offices, or turpentine stills are all gone but the name of the communities are still used today. If you live outside of Jackson Co. and expect to be able to come here and find "deserted" towns with buildings, stores, etc still intact you will be disappointed... To classify these old communities/villlages as "ghost towns" is more romanticism than anything else. This is not meant to be critical but to keep the proper viewpoint about "ghost towns" in Jackson Co., FL. I can show you "Inwood, FL" in 30 seconds or less ... I live here... -)). It is smaller than Two Egg... James James L. Edenfield Website: http://edenfield.org Email: [email protected]
I gotta concur with James Edenfield in getting perspective on GHOST TOWNS. THANKS JAMES Glen
I have a small book on the "ghost" towns of Fl and noticed a number of indian towns listed and thought there may be some new info here . The directions are VERY general for each co. CHICHILE (Alachua Co) - Indian Village and Spalding Trading Post 2 miles north of Micanopy in Paynes Prairie. OCHEESEE (Calhoun Co) - Indian Town 10 miles north of Blountstown on Apalachicola River. WEALUSTA (Clay Co) - Large indian village on Black Creek & St Johns River. TOLOPCHOPKO, MINATTI, CHETUCKELA (Polk Co) - Indian villages along 2 miles of Saddle Creek south of Lake Hancock. OKAHUMPKA (Sumter Co) - Large indian town on S.W. side of Lake Okahumpka 3 miles S.E of Wildwood. This was all that was listed as indian villages/towns specifically. And all the directions that were given. Hope this helps someone. Glenda.

PITTS - On north county line 2 miles west of Esto. SILAS - N. W. corner of county near Hys. 2 & 81. CERROGORDO - 3 miles N.N.W. of Westville off Hy. 179A VALLE - On R.R. 4 miles S.W. of Westville (May be covered by Ponce DeLeon). LONG PINE - On R.R. 4 miles west of Bonifay near Hy.10. BARKERS - 3 miles N.E. of Prosperity on Hy. 179A. Hope this helps. Directions are word for word from the book. Glenda.
There are also the oldest towns of all, the Apalachicola Indian towns... Iola, Choconicla, & others. If those aren't in the book, I have directions to Choconicla courtesy of Dale Cox but would have to dig for the others. If I can accomplish what I intend, I will start a web site about the Apalachicolas featuring mostly source material, in the very near future, and one of the maps I have shows the reservations created in the 1820s that encompass the towns. As I understand it, there were four reservations encompassing 6 towns... but there is some confusion about a reservation made for Nea Mathla which was apparently never fixed into a particular place till in essence it was sold to a White guy and moved to Tallahassee... all in one fell swoop, I believe: political prestidigitation if there ever was any such. Glenda, Anything on Majette, FL ? This is or was a small mill village near Millville, FL, now absorbed within Panama City, Bay Co., FL. My dad was born there back in April of 1922.
