The Univ. of Florida has a good collection of old Florida newspaper on microfilm. I looked through my master list and did not find a "Times Courier" listed for 1881. I did find "The Marianna Courier," but it appears that only three copies have been saved on microfilm; the oldest date was March 13, 1873. Dear Sheree, I can tell you have already checked the Jackson Co website.. there is a WPA Cemetery list.. but I didn't see Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove is listed on the Main Cemetery Index, but with no link. I checked Holmes Co website and found no cemetery by that name. I would suggest you call a Mortician or Funereal Parlor in Holmes Co., to see if they can verify the existance of a Pleasant Grove Cem in Holmes Co. If there is one, they should be able to supply you with directions. Other options would be to locate a local Church, or Chamber of Commerce, and if no luck there, try the NON emergancy phone number to the local constabulary. They would also know. If you need to look for telephone numbers check online at Switchboard.com. You can look for businesses just like using the REAL Yellowpages! Best wishes in your hunt! Can someone help here.....Betty Subj: Cemetery_Churches Date: 04/06/2002 10:38:16 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: [email protected] (Sheree Wells) Dear Betty, First of all, I'd like to thank you for all the work you've done in preserving and making available all the precious names of our ancestors. I've found many ancestors because of your work. I have a question about one of the cemeteries on the Jackson County list. I have ancestors reportedly buried there, but I've had confusing info on where it is. The Pleasant Grove cemetery is shown here as being in Jackson County, but others on the web have been saying it is just over the line in Holmes County. Are there 2 cemeteries in the area with the same name? I have an offer by someone to do a look-up in the cemetery, but I don't know if we're both talking about the same cemetery. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks! Sheree Wells
Might someone on the list be able to help her with out her having to pay...Betty Subj: Genealogy search Date: 04/06/2002 9:29:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Maam, My name is Cheryl Ramsey. I am trying to do genealogy from home because I live in a very small town in a rather isolated part of Texas and so have limited access to Florida records. I am trying to find relatives of my Grandfather Outlaw who was supposed to have lost his parents in a buggy accident or fire. He was supposedly born in Sneads. How much would you charge me to look up some information? I will send you all I know(it ain't much!) and a story that will make you bang your head on a brick wall numerous times. The only other options I have at this point is slimy green rocks to look under for info. Thank you for your time. Cheryl Ramsey [email protected]
Does anyone know where I may get a copy of an obit that would have been in "The Times Courier" (early local Jackson Co. newspaper ) in 1881. The will states that it was published in the "Times Courier" and I am hoping the obit was also. Thanks
I was recently in Marianna Florida looking for a grave site and some of this information may be helpful: The Neal Funeral Home records are now in the custody of The Marianna Chapel. The gentleman that helped me was named John. Sorry I didn't get the last name. There is also a Ms. Comerford that was working there that was helpful. Now a question: I found an obituary in the Jackson County Floridan microfilm files that stated a person was buried in Riverside Cemetery. The city has no record of this burial. The surveys show no record. Any suggestions to find a grave site? The name I am looking for is Ira Wilson Tully (The Floridan spelled it Tulley). Avery Freeman Aurora, Colorado

Hi Don, Is she asking for the correct spelling of Lewis? or Louis? I think I would try Lewis since there is a family member in Ephesus with same name. Also try L initial as well as M initial or try Melton as a first name. Did her grandfather actually die in Ala? Was he "pronounced" in another state? Most obvious places to look would be states adjoining Al. Did he go by Lou, Lew or Mel or Melton? There is a notation on a family tree that he went by the name of MELT. His civil war records do show the following: Louis Melton Avery, served in 11th Fla Infantry, Alligance to the Confederate States. He enlisted as a priv. and that was his rank upon discharge. I realise it shows the spelling of Louis instead of Lewis. But in Ephesus Cem there is another family member with same name.. using the spellling Lewis.. might make a difference. Next: Contact Bobbie Tate at: [email protected] This person has a tree online with Cherie's Grandfather on it, and 52 other Avery's as well. Yes, he is buried at Ephesus in Campbellton, Jackson Co. Fl. I didn't see him in a quick search of Fla Death Index. That can be checked at Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com or MyFamily.com. There was a 3 day waiting period in Florida after a marriage application was received and also parental permission was required for anyone under age 18. This was not true in Georgia, so couples could drive to Georgia, get married and be back in less than two hours. I do not know about Alabama, but most of the ones I know went to Georgia. Mrs. Mary Scott who lives off the Larramore Rd. out from Marinna, and near the Dipper Rd. told me several years that there were at one time quite a few graves. Now there is only Lt. James Watts Gainer, Civil War Veteran, and one of his sons Ed Gene Gainer. Also over in Sylvannia Cem out from Vernon, Fl. is unmarked graves not listed on the last print out I did for that Cem. As a child I attended I can remember 2 burials there. Abbie Masselena, and Madison Potter, I am also sure that Madison's parents are buried their also, and possibly a younger brother.

Two notes of interest from Cynthia Dean on the Escambia County List: At this website, they will do photo restoration for free. I have not tried them out, and I suspect they will charge after they establish a clientele. If anyone does try them, I would be interested to learn the results. It will help with the Heritage Book to get the photos as clear and defined as possible. http://www.fotofixit.com/ Good News for the procrastinators! The deadline to submit your family stories to the Heritage Book of Escambia Co. FL has been extended to July 31, 2002. If you need brochure, write me. Example: I lived in Bay Co, FL and wanted to get married when I was 19. I needed my parents permission because the legal age to marry in FL was 21. My mother would not give her permission. Even though I had been living on my own and working and supporting myself for two years, I still needed permission. So I went to Geneva, AL and got married. I know others who have done the same thing for the same reason. Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL
Can anyone tell the status of the public school system in Jackson Co during the early 1900's?? When did the state take over the schools? Was there a local dept which kept track of students? And is it available?? Thanks, Glenda.
Donalsonville did not require parental consent and that is why so many marriages from out of state took place there. Several years later many of marriages that took place in the 40's, 50's & 60's were not legal because the person performing the marriages was not licensed.
