Jim, et al: The name Aspalaga is very interesting. There was a Timucuan/Apalachee Franciscan mission east of Tallahassee in Jefferson County named San Juan de Aspalaga. I would guess that the town of Aspalaga was named after the mission. I don't know why, but the coincidence is too great. I have researched archives and asked of map historians if anyone knows the origination of the word Aspalaga. I have drawn a total blank. No place name in Spain or Portugal (according to the gurus). If anyone can find out the source of the name Aspalaga, it would be significant. It may be Indian, but most missions are named after European placenames or people. Inquiring minds need to know. Thanks for the information on your family's connection to Aspalaga. It is very interesting. George Washington Sully did a little portrait of Aspalaga, a copy of which hangs in a B&B in Apalachicola. I think the original is at UWF in their Sully archives, but am not sure. It is a wonderful little portrait drawn from the perspective of a ship on the river, or from the Coe side of the river. Coe had a sugar mill across the river that was a well-known landmark for ships. My understanding is that the foundation of the works is still there. The land is a hunting club now. There are also wonderful springs and ponds there where folks had great picnics. The oldtimers remember fishing there until recent times. take care, Phil Jwebbj@aol.com wrote: > >In a message dated 1/7/2007 10:09:40 A.M. A ship carrying tourist up the Apalichicola River was force to seek refuge during a bad storm and docked at Aspalaga. One of the passengers was Katrina Brinchman from Hagstette, Oldenburg, Germany. I am researching the Gee/McElvy/McElveen connections. Elias McElvy, born SC 1794 married Nancy Christian Wyche in Montgomery Co, GA in 1817. Sometime between 1817 and the birth of their son, James in 1827, they changed their name to McElveen. Their daughter, Margaret Susan McElveen, born 1833, married Bolivar Hopkins Gee in 1856. I do have documentation the Elias McElvy and Nancy Christian changed their name from McElvy to McElveen. I believe Elias McElvy/McElveen is directly related to my g-g-g-grandfather, William McElvy, born 1778/1781 possibly in SC or GA. He seemed to travel the same route that William McElvy did. East coast of GA to southern GA & north FL. I would love to hear from the descendants of the above. Any help will be appreciated. Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL In a message dated 1/7/2007 4:14:01 A.M. These counties were the location of some incredible Florida history that has been little exposed. There were tremendous goings-on during the Second Seminole Wars in that area that even the Seminole Wars scholars have neglected. Some tidbits: Pascofa, the Creek leader and his band were captured by Ethan Allen Hitchcock at Fort Preston. The site of the fort is now under the river. Pascofa was considered a real savage by the locals and was blamed for every outrage in the area. He surrendered peacefully and gracefully to Hitchcock and later became one of the principal chiefs of the Seminoles in Oklahoma. He fought for the union in the civil war and even met with Lincoln. He was intelligent and a real peacemaker. Very little has been written about him. Aspalaga was a major center of the area. It no longer exists. Someone needs to write the definitive history of the town....site of the first ferry, the national road across the state...home of Squire Goodson, one of the leading slave traders of the era. Rumors persist of slave trading there through the 1850's, even possible importation of slaves from Africa off loading at the steamship docks long after that was illegal. Aspalaga is now a bunch of woods on the river, virtually nothing exists of the once prosperous community with church, hotel, store and an active social life....the whole nine yards. Jackson went through there.....great history.... Fort Preston needs researched. It was a significant place used by Hitchcock and a center of Middle Florida Second Seminole War history...no one knows much of anything about it. Ocheesee Landing.....wonderful history in both Native American and early settlers history. The two largest oaks in the State of Florida were there. One still is. The other burned down. I interviewed the burner downer of the other tree! I had to promise silence until he passes away! He is concerned his still could get arrested! Ha! What a great story! My lips are sealed! Someone needs to write the history of the Apalachicolas in that area. Tragic stuff. The mystery of what happened to Coe's slaves after he died......stories of mass murders on the property after emancipation.....fascinating stuff....needs studied.... I could go on and on....probably will bore you all to death...... By the way, Mr. Nobles credited me the other day with being the editor of the Hentz book. I am an enthusiastic endorser of the book, but was not the editor. Just wanted to set the record straight so that Professor Stowe doesn't get irritated at me.....Ed Baptist's book is the other great volume recalling the history of this time period. It is quite a read though....his doctoral dissertation recently published. You need a lot of caffeine to get through that one..... Gotta get to church.....I will get back to my lurking self... Glen: There is much confusion about the burial location of the Coes. Both Will and Jesse Jr died young and tragic deaths from their excessive use of drugs and alcohol. I believe it is possible that one or the other (or both) are buried in the Gee Cemetery. The literature indicates that they were buried in a "Gregory" cemetery somewhere in Gadsden County. I would love to visit this cemetery. I have been to several in Gadsden County searching for the Coes, but not this one. The real question and point of interest is where Major Rev. Coe was buried. That is the real mystery. There is no agreement on that end. This is highly unusual in that he was very prominent in both Gadsden and Jackson society and was the Grand Master of the Masons in Florida (twice). He also have the invocation at the inauguration of the first governor. Every other Grand Master of that era and in that area has an elaborate marker. I have seen them all. Some reports indicate he was buried in the Methodist church cemetery in Quincy and some indicate he was buried at his daughter's home in Quincy. Others indicate he may be buried somewhere near Mt Pleasant. His daughter's home still exists and is right across the street from the old high school. Of course, behind the high school is the West Cemetery which was in use at the time of Jesse's death. It would be reasonable to assume that since it is within 100 yards of her house, that is what is meant by him having been buried at "her house." I have spent hours in the cemetery and there is no marker for Jesse. Two other Grand Masters of that era are buried there with elaborate markers. It may also be that Jesse Sr is buried literally on the property of his daughter, across the street from the old high school. I have never had the courage to knock on the door and ask if the current resident knows of a body buried behind or beside the house! It is remarkable that someone of the stature of Major Coe was buried in an elaborate funeral (which he was), yet no one knows for sure where. He was the head of the Methodist ministers, head of the Masons, a former fighter in Jackson's army and the largest cotton producer and slave holder of the area. Now the stories and myths coming from his two plantations....now there is some wild Florida history, especially after his death . . . but that is another story altogether! Dr Hentz and his wife are buried in a well marked grave in the Eastern Cemetery. I have scoured it as well. Major Coe is not there either. Many of the Gregorys are buried near Ocala, if that is of interest to anyone. I probably haven't helped, but maybe added to the mystery. All I know is that it is way back in the woods and there is a very tall Masonic marker in the middle of it. There are many Gees and about six Gregorys (mostly infants) buried there. Members of the Gee family have cleaned it up and it is fenced off. It is well cared for. Annette Gee Ford took my husband and I there about five years ago. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Whit Gainey" <wtgainey@bellsouth.net> To: <fljackso@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 06, 2007 3:51 PM Subject: Re: [FLJACKSO] J. Looking for some help to find family of Henry Hamilton, who married Louella Basford April 10, 1898 in Jackson county, Florida. By 1900, it appears he is deceased as she is living with her father & family again and listed as a widow with no children. We have no info on him and would like to fill some in on his family, too. any help greatly appreciated. thanks! Ginny VBasford@aol.com
