    3. --WebTV-Mail-15092-5928 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Shirley Your name is also familier to me. Maybe from the Dale County website. But your husbands names are more familier. My mother was Roxey Ann Clark daughter of Wm. Henry Clark. Her sister Minnie L. Clark married Isreal Garner. Her sister Mandy Jane Clark married General Clayton Brackin. Her brother Wm. Harvey Clark married Mary L. Williams. They had one bro Wesley Clark who was killed in a hurricane 1926 in Fl. My Uncle William Harvey Clark lived in Houston County near Cottonwood untill his death in 1956. He was 78 yrs old, some of his children are buried in Madrid Cemertary in Houston County. My Aunt Mandy Clark Brackin lived there also. My mother had lots of brothers and sisters who she had lost track of after their mothers had died. 7 of the children had been sold or given away. My mother was raised by a stepmother. It has been said my grandfather had been married 7 times. When i was abt 7 or 8 yrs old. We went to Holmes County to a Clark Family reunion. I don't remember if it was her bros or an Uncle. But i do know she had two bros who moved to Fl. And an Uncle. Her bro William Harvey Clark's son Buster Clark moved to Green Cove Springs Fl. and his daughter Frances Kelly lives there now. Well I am sorry, i get carried away when i talk abt my kin. I only wish i had listened to my mother more closely when she talked abt her family. It would have been much easier to find them now. If you have any info on the Clark's , I would be glad to share. I belong to several Clark Groups and have gathered alot of info. But this is one crazy mixed up bunch. Every family has the same names handed down from each family. It is hard to tell who belongs where. I think every man and woman was married at least 3 or 4 times. Thanks for letting me bend your ear. If i get to be a pest to anyone, just tell me . I did go to the fields and help . but most of the time i was riding on the cotton sack of one of my brothers. So all my memories are good ones. Except for loseing my Dad , bro Byrd Ezell and my grandma Willie Hannah Adkins Ezell in 1935 and 1936. We had some Pelham nieghbors. When I was abt 5 yrs old we went to visit them one night to a Peanut Shelling Party they were having. And of course it was close enough we were walking. One family with a little girl was walking in head of us ( don't remember their name), but the little girl got bit by a rattle snake. I guess that is why i still remember. At that time we were living near Wicksburg. How abt those clay hills. My dad had a Model A Ford. We had to all sit in the back seat to get enough traction and back up the hill to get to the top. And when they were wet, we slipped and slided like we were on ice or snow. I moved to Penacola with my husband when i was abt 14 years old. I got married when i was 13. But we only lived there abt a year. Then we moved to Largo Fl. to be with my mother after 2 of my bros joined the Army in WW2. So i have been here ever since. I have nieces that live in or near Graceville. And a bro Richard Ezell who lives in Live Oak Fl. But i never visit them, just talk to them on the phone. My brother Isacc Henry Ezell married Vera Kirkland abt 1927 in Geneva County. Henry died in 1944 in Largo, but Vera and thier kids moved back to Graceville. Two of the Girls married McCallister's. Vera had remarried several times, the last one was a Hicks, she just passed away around Xmas of last year. Do you know any of them. I was born in 1941 in Gadsden Co, FL, but I remember the rolling store and the little country store where we bought all we needed to live on. I worked in the tobacco fields 10 hours a day Monday through Friday all summer. I started when I was 6 years old. I was making a whopping $3.00 a DAY by the time I was 17. I also picked pecans, beans, tomatoes, etc. The farmers wife, who was the best country cook in the world (except Mama & Grandma), fixed the noon meal for us field hands. The work hard and the weather was hot, but we survived and were, for the most part, happy. Yes, I do long for the good ole days when life was simple. 3. Yes, those clay roads are terrible when it rains. Seems like most of the time when my mother and I have been back over there it's been raining too. We get clay all over the car! Mother says, there is no use in washing the car before we go. She lived in the Poplar Springs, Holmes county area before she moved away from there. She's never mentioned any of her sisters getting bit by a rattlesnake though. I think I would have heard of that one. I don't have a Vera Kirkland in my database but I have a Kirkland book which may have her in it. I'll have to look it up. I have an Aunt on my Redmon side that was married about 13 or 14. Still married to the same husband too! They were born in 1925 and 1932. I was born in 1948, married at age 18, and been married for 36 years now. I've lived in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Hawaii, and Tennessee. Lived away from my Mother more than I've lived around her but we talk on the phone alot. I usually try to visit her two or three times a year, no matter where I live. Exception! One a year when we lived in Hawaii. It was too expensive to fly home more than that. That was the only way to get off the island. Janice Redmon Smith PS: I stated I stood on a wooden bride in the last message. That's not true! I stood on a wooden bridge and looked over the sides. I bet that was a "HUH?" to everybody! --- Jimmie Dixon <ninnid@webtv.net> wrote: > > --WebTV-Mail-6260-6156 > Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit > > Janice > I lived that life for 14 years, but i've never > been back to see > anything except when we took my mother back to put > her next to my daddy > at Shiloh Baptist Cemetary. 3. I forgot to tell Jimmie I, also, remember the rolling store when I visited my grandparents. It was so unique and exciting as a city raised girl to walk down the dirt road from my grandmother's house to the rolling store on the next dirt crossroads or have it pull up in front of the house. Trying to see inside the door while my Grandmother gave her order of groceries at the food stuff or pots and pans or trying to figure out the excite piece of candy I wanted to purchase. 3. Yes, Holmes Counties are wonderful people! I've lived there before. My husband is part of the Miller's Crossroads bunch. (Millers and Faircloths) It seems isolated to some who have lived in the city but it's not too far to go places but just not everyday. You can't just run to Wal-Mart in 5 minutes. My husband loves it dearly! He wants to move back there. If we ever do, I'll try my best to help with some of the volunteer work. 2. I'm not very lazy, just been working hard. Am a real estate appraiser in Dothan, and have my son and two more guys working with me. Business nearly overwhelms us. Some people have refinanced twice in a year as the rates keep going down - down. My gr grandfather ws Calvin E. Dykes. His first wife and child died after war. He taught in a one room school right on AL line. Lived on Bascom to Neal's Landing road. Sold him land to his Yarbrough kin and came across line to this area in 1896. He was an early freewill Bap preacher at Howards Grove, just north of Cottonwood, on Ashford road. He married one of his former students, Laura Simmons, who was 18 and he was 36 or so when they married. He was a freewill preacher, but she was a Primitive (foot washing) Baptist. I have his civil war pistol and her glasses. He was in Co B, 15th FL Cav, as were most of his kin, and was in Battle of Marianna. I hve a book on tht battle. All my grandparents and 3 great grandfathers and two great grandmothers, are all buried at Howards Grove. Have not been able to find burial place of James R and Jane. With at least three Dykes Cem in Jackson Co, seems like it would have been easier. Wonder if they were shippped back to GA for burial. The bro of James, Sr was Burrell, whose photo is in a Cochran history book that I have for Pulaski-Bleckley Counties, GA. Burrell donated the land for Andersonville prison, and there is a Dykes cem near the prison, although I have never been. Our Dykes ancestor in VA refused to fight against the Bristish and they took his land and sold it to pay someone to fight in his place. He moved to NC to live with his son, who had marr into Granberry family and Everett family. Have ordered a book from Ebay, a large book on those whose loyalties were with the British during the war. Should get it in next day or two. Will be interesting in see if any Dykes are in there, or Dyches as some called it. Got a copy of the old will from one Dykes inSC, and they spelled it Dyches, and all the sums were in pounds, shillings, etc. My wife's family is the Petty family. Her grandfather is buried in old Sweet Gum Head Cem in Holmes County, FL, out in middle of forks in the road. Her father was born in Westville, raised in Panama City, and now is retired and lives in Branford, FL. Her parents were divorced, and she has several half bro/sisters. I have photos of Calvin's bro William and at least two of the sisters, if I can remember where I put them. Someone from Marianna sent them to me. My wife has about taken over my computer at home as she is hooked on the free AOL games, primarily super solitaire. Merry Christmas. I know a lot of trivia, but not much of anything of any importance!
