Thank you for the obit! How did you get it? I went to the Holmes County Advertiser office several months ago and all they had were the newspapers on microfilm with no index. At the time, I didn't have dates of death for most folks, so I couldn't go to the right dates of publication to search for obits. > -----Original Message----- > From: Michael S. OH ME OH MY! I have problems. I can relate to this, especially, the John Smith thing. I laughed hysterically the whole way through. Thanks, Max, I needed that. Hi I had seen various sources with the name "Peters" and some with "Peterson" as Rebecca's maiden name. However, I have the death certificate for Abraham and Rebecca's oldest son, Elbert L. Faircloth. It lists his parents as "Abraham Faircloth" born in North Carolina and "Rebecca Peters" born in Georgia. The informant on Elbert's death certificate was W.R. Faircloth (I think this is his son, William Robert). So...for now, I'm going to rely on this source for the name "Peters." I don't know who Eliza married, actually. I don't know much about the children of Abraham and Rebecca, except for Elbert, who I am directly descended from. The place I usually go to hunt down information is to the Holmes County U.S. genweb pages. It has lists for many cemeteries in Holmes County (including Union Hill where both Elbert and Abraham are buried). I'll do a little sleuthing and get back to you if I find anything. > -----Original Message----- > From: Michael S. Hey, I found where I got my info. It was in a manella folder in another file cabinet in a Faircloth folder. The packet was mailed to me from Robert J.(Bob) Faircloth from Houston, Texas back around 1999. Exact date is not stamped on the package but I received emails and query messages from him about that time. He said he got Rebecca's surname, Peterson, from Abraham's pension record and widow's pension record. I don't have a copy of it though. He fought in the Florida Indian Wars. Bob said he had been to Faircloth reunions held at Stone Mountain, GA. The package had some copies of letters written to him from Geraldine Clemmons she was asking him where in Alabama the children were born. She was the grand daughter of Elizabeth Faircloth. He said, he had first met her at the first reunion held at Sone Mountain, GA. in the late 70s. I have some of the Faircloth info out of her and Ann Wells book but I don't recall if she said anything about Elizabeth in it. I'll have to look to see if I can find it. Oh, here in some notes it says Eliza never married. She's probably buried at Union Hill with the rest of the Faircloths in an unmarked grave. That is totally a guess and an opinion based on she was a single woman. Please, don't take it and run to the fact sheet with it. I would think pension records and widow records would serve as a good resource since usually it the person themselves who give the information. This is something we need further research on, I would think. I thought you all might enjoy having this. They are notes from my records which include Rhoda's obituary. She and her folks were all born in Alabama. She reported her age as 43 at the time of the 1900 census. Her occupation was a housekeeper, bore 12 children with 10 living and married for 23 years in 1900. She could read and write according to census records. Obituary: "Mrs. Rhoda Faircloth, 80, mother of tax collector W.R. Faircloth, of this city, died at the home of her son near Miller's Cross Road, about 7:00 last Monday morning. The funeral services were held at Union Hill church, the long time church home of the deceased, Tuesday morning at 11:00, and burial was in the cemetery nearby. The services were conducted by a former pastor, Rev. A.D. Halstead, assisted by the present pastor, Rev. M. Simmons, and Rev. J.C. Manuel. Bonifay Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The deceased had been ill for about a year, following a light stroke. She is survived by four sons: W.R., R.A., Lee, and D.E. all of Holmes county. There also survive six daughters: Mrs. Wesley Birge, of Chipley; and Mrs. Andrew Miller, Mrs. Wesley Miller, Mrs. Dora Williams, Mrs. Jim Paul and Mrs. Jennie Murphy, all of Holmes county. One sister survives, Mrs. Jesse Lewis, affectionately known as "Aunt Caroline" to a host of descendents of the deceased. Mrs. Faircloth was born in Alabama, as Miss Rhoda Woodall. At the time of her marriage to Elbert Faircloth she moved with her husband to Florida where she has resided ever since. She was a great church and community worker and filled a large place in the lives of many for many years. With a large family and with the toil of rearing them under pioneer conditions, she had energy and thought to include manifold services to church and neighbors." Janice: I actually had the name Rebecca Peters (b. 2/4/1833 and d. 10/30/1909) rather than Peterson. I do not have anything on her parents. Which is correct? Does anyone have other information on Abraham Faircloth: I only have his death date as 1877 and no marriage date? BTW, their daughter Eliza Faircloth, b. 1/17/1854 married a French, but which one? The only Nancy I have found associated with the Faircloths in my records so far is a Nancy Altman. Isaac Faircloth was living in her household on the 1860 Holmes County Federal Census. Holmes County, State of Florida, 22nd day of July, 1860, Ponce de Leon post office, pg. 719 14. 155/155 Nancy Altman 60 w domestic 350 SC 15. Mathias Trubs 18 w serving 75 SC 16 Isaac Faircloth 41 w serving GA It seems she would have been a little too old to marry him but who knows. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi I believe you'll also find Faircloths in Thomas County, GA. They were also in North Carolina. Thanks for you help. I will look into Laurens County. It is possible the information on the death certificate is incorrect or only partially correct. When I looked at it closer I realized the date of birth for Rachel was wrong. They wrote 1872 but she was born around 1852. No informant signed this death certificate. At this point I have several conflicting names for Jim (James) Taylor's wife-- Eveline (last name?), Sarah Knight, Elizabeth (last name), and now Nancy Faircloth. I think Jim (James) Taylor spent some time in Thomas county Georgia before coming into Florida because his first few children were born there. I'll keep looking. If anyone can offer any help it is always much appreciated. Correction: I meant to say Nancy Faircloth is NOT among the list of children I have for Abraham Faircloth. I apologize for the mistake. > -----Original Message----- > From: Angela Williams > Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2003 11:03 PM > To: FLHOLMES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: [FLHOLMES] Nancy Faircloth and James (Jim) Taylor--Georgia, Florida > > Hi > > I've never heard of a Nancy Faircloth. Hi I've never heard of a Nancy Faircloth. However, I am descended from Abraham Faircloth who came to Holmes County around 1848 from Georgia. He married Rebecca Peters. I think your Nancy is likely somehow related to him. She is among the list of children I have for him. I think, also, you might be wrong about her age. If she was born as early as 1820, it's highly unlikely she had a daughter in 1872- when she was 52. Abraham came to Holmes County and 2 of his brothers followed, Isaac and Jacob. Perhaps she was the daughter of one of these 2 men. You may want to look in Laurens County census records to see if you can find a Nancy who was about her age on the 1850 census. Laurens County is where Abraham is from. OR...a very distinct possibility is that Nancy was a nickname. Finally, it's possible that the person giving the information on the death certificate was simply incorrect. A death certificate is only as reliable as the person who originally gave the information. Is the informant listed on the certificate? If so, do you recognize the name as a close relative of Rachel Taylor?
