Dear friends of Holmes County, It is with regret that I inform you that our CO-coordinator Cathy Popp has had to resign her position as CO-coordinator and Web-manager of the Holmes County GenWeb site. Her work responsibilities requires a tremendous amount of her time plus her family's needs and other obligations she has, she feels that she doesn't have the time needed to keep up the site as she feels it should be kept. As Holmes County researchers, we all owe Cathy a big THANK YOU. When Cathy and I took over the Holmes County project, we had very little information available for our researchers, but due to Cathys hard work, (which included her own personal research contributions, and spending many hours designing, & posting the many donations we have had from our fellow researchers, cemetery surveyors, etc) our Holmes County site is one of the best researched counties in the Florida Genweb Project. Thank you Cathy, we love you and will miss you. Ann Marlow Hall PS...... So that I don't have to jam everyone's mailbox with an extra mail. We will be needing a replacement for Cathy. (no small task) If you are familiar with web design, etc., and are interested in this position please contact me. Please put HOLMES COUNTY in the subject line so it will grab my attention, I get a lot of mail....some wanted and a lot of junk (spam) so the subject line is very important. Mt. Ida is the church at New Hope on Highway 2 in Holmes County. Your ancestor could have lived in Holmes County and was listed Alabama because when I was growing up the address where I lived at New Hope, 4 miles from the state line, was Rt. 2, Geneva, AL. There has always been confusion about that. Maggie and Mona, many many thanks for your response. I was thunderstruck to get such a quick response. I will call my cousin tonight, who is the sister of Charles Edward Deese, and let her know. I have been given a desciption to a cemetery in Holmes County, but am trying to learn the name of it. I apparently have three cousins buried there in unmarked graves: Jerral Edsel Majors, Joan Majors, and Charles Edward Deese. The directions I have been given are "go down past the Bethlehem campgrounds and turn right, cross a small bridge and the church was right there on the right. Their cemetery was in the back of the church. The Whitakers settled on 10 Mile Creek in the early 1820's and the road we passed the campground on was in Whitaker settlement." Many thanks.
They are buried at Smyrna Cemetery...- location - From the courthouse in Bonifay, go west one block, turn right (north) on State Road #79 and go 2.3 miles, turn left on State Road #177 and go 4 miles, turn right on dirt road and go .1 mile. Cemetery will be on the left, behind New Smyrna Hope this helps. Yes the early Whitaker settlement was around the Bethlehem Campground on 10 mile creek. I think you are looking for New Smyrna Cemetery. My directions from Bethlehem Campground on highway 160 go east on highway160 cross tenmile creek turn right on Malcolm Taylor Road (dirt road) stay on that road till it dead ends turn right cross small bridge church & cemetery on your right. I haven't been to that church & cemetery in several years. However I gew up in that area on Malcolm Taylor Road. Yet another way from highway 160 & highway 177 go south on 177 I think there is a sign for New Smyrna Church on highway 177. This information is from Holmes Co Cemetery Census by Lon Everett. New Smyrna Cemetery - from highway 79 & 177 take 177 about 4 miles turn right on dirt road & go .1 mile. Cemetery will on the left behind New Smyrna Assembly of God Chruch. I was at St. John's Cemetery in Holmes County this past weekend and noted the new headstones on these two individuals. I'm not sure who is responsible, but I would like to say "THANK YOU" to them! Thomas Allen was my Great Grandfather. I would like to correspond with you who did the headstones.

Albert Brock (my granduncle) was married to Mittie Forehand. I believe she was the sister to Easton and Weston. I have her parents as Amon and Catherine Forehand. I was unaware that Albert Brock spent time in Alabama. What place in Alabama were they located when the census was taken? Thanks. I did not see Easton Forehand listed in the index for 1920 Holmes Co census. These people were listed on the same page in different households: 1920 Holmes Co FL census Live Oak ED71 page 1 Forehand A M 76 Forehand Amos G 20 Forehand Ashly 75 Forehand S V 39 Forehand Wesley 26 NOTE: A M Forehand 76 with wife Catherine 75 lived next door to Wesley. If you want the census info on Wesley Forehand let me know. Also Albert Brock age 31 was listed on the same page as the Forehands in 1920. I also found Albert Brock & family with Weston Forehand & family living in the same household in AL in the 1930 census. Easton Forehand was listed on the 1930 Holmes Co FL census living in Live Oak. Let me know if you need that info. maggie
