Anita, I found James Barnes and Cornelius Barnes in both Heart and History of Holmes County and in Holmesteading. In Heart and History, in addition to James and Cornelius, there are 25 Barnes, many in the first tax list in 1848, and in the 1850 Census. In Holmesteading there are 8 Barnes', including Cornelius and James. The earlier posting describes the books. The price is, $40 each book, with $5 each postage and handling, = $45. Send check, or pay through Pay Pal. Sue Riddle Cronkite 125 22nd Ave. Apalachicola, FL 32320 (850) 653-6965 Have a blessed Christmas and New Year! I didn't find anything on William Chilton Allen. I did find some other Allens: In Heart and History of Holmes County by Anna Paget Wells V. C. Allen was Esto School principal in 1937-38; Zeke was a Kiwanis Club member promoting the Bonifay Rodeo in 1952. In Holmesteading there is an A. A. Allen signed incorporation papers for town of Esto Oct. 14, 1902; Kate Allen was a teacher in 1912, and W. N. was on the jury of a widely publicized murder trial. I suppose you've looked up any Census records on William Chilton Allen. Have you checked the railroad he worked for as to records of his employment. The courthouse for Holmes County was in Ceregorda first, then Westville, then Bonifay, and I think all three courthouses burned at some time, I forget when. Maybe there are Allens in Holmes County now who would have records. It would be fantastic if a Rootsweb member has information. That's what the Holmes Rootsweb was set up for, and people used to e-mail on it asking for information, and finding people who had records. Now many people search the web. I enjoyed looking up what I could. Good luck with the search. Sue Riddle Cronkite. If you are interested in the books, they are each $40, plus $5 shipping, equals $45 each. You can send me a check, or pay through PayPal. Sue Riddle Cronkite 125 22nd Ave. Apalachicola, FL 32320
Angela Harrell, you asked about your family, and I had a heyday looking in both the Heart and History book and Holmesteading. There are a great number of Byrds and Ammons'. In Heart and History of Holmes County, Ruben and Josiah Ammons are on 1849 tax roll.William Byrd is on an 1849 tax roll; there are 3 Sconiers, 6 Wrights; 10 Retherfords, including John and Seaborn; 13 Suttons. I knew lots of Ammons' and Suttons. I was a cheerleader in the late 1940s for the Ponce de Leon Pirates with Virginia Ammons, Celia Jane Sutton, and Joy (I think she was a Sutton too). There is 1 Sealy. In Holmesteading there are a large number of Suttons too. Next door neighbors to us were some Harrells, with Eileen, my age, and Lureen youger. I used to know a teacher named Ammons. Can't remember her first name. I'll have to look up Shirley and Robert. It is a small world. Heart and History of Holmes County, and Holmesteading are $40 each, with $5 added for postage. You really got me to remembering the old days. There was a time when I knew just about everybody in Holmes County. If you want the books send me a check to: Sue Riddle Cronkite 125 22nd Ave. Apalachicola, FL 32320 Or you can use PayPal to pay.
Sue: can you check to see if there is anything on William Chilton ALLEN? I am looking for information before before the 1885 state census when he moved to land her purchased property on the West Bonifay town line when he was working for the railroad. In particular, am looking for his birth place and his parents names and birth places. Tks
Sue, I am looking for Holmes County Byrd and Ammons families. Ruben Ammons b. 1847 immigrated from Dale County, AL then on to Holmes by 1870. Ruben is the son of Josiah Ammons and Elizabeth Sealy. He married Agatha (Axie) Hale. She is the daughter of John Hale b. 1820 (ish) in Alabama. William Byrd son of Unknown Byrd and Elizabeth LNU. Born about 1830 in AL. He had siblings Mary (Sconiers/Wright) Elizabeth (Daniel Neal), Sarah (Joseph Rutherford), Seaborn (Johanna Sutton) and James (Elizabeth Lovett). William married Elizabeth Sutton, daughter of Charles and Charity Bryant Sutton. Thank you for a look up. Side note: I see you live in Aplach. My grandparents lived there for decades. My Uncle, Robert and Shirley Ammons still live there. Small world! To Lynn, who asked about the Jackson, Taylor, and Ramsey names: There are 13 Jacksons, 15 Taylors, and 10 Ramseys. One of the Ramseys was a Doctor, a Taylor was the Holmes County clerk for many years. I knew the children of many of the people mentioned, one graduated in 1951 when I did from Ponce de Leon High School and many others dropped out to join the military and fought in the Korean conflict, which was never declared a war. To Anita, I can check your family names if you tell them to me. I grew up in Holmes County, and hope to live there again in the New Hope Community on Highway west of the Choctawhatchee River. I love Holmes County and can tell you personal stories about many people in those books. I wrote a column in the Holmes County Advertiser for many years, and hope to compile them into a book. Most of the articles were about people and years gone by. Best wishes, Sue Riddle Cronkite Family names: Riddle, Collins, Clark, Mims, Urquhart, Burch. One of my mother's first cousins, Cully Jones, from Black, AL, where Geneva County, AL, joins Holmes County, FL, died recently. He was 88 years old, and beloved by many. <http://www.avg.com/email-signature?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail> Virus-free. www.avg.com <http://www.avg.com/email-signature?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail> <#DAB4FAD8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Sat, Dec 2, 2017 at 3:51 PM, <flholmes-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Send FLHOLMES mailing list submissions to > flholmes@rootsweb.com > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists9.rootsweb.ancestry.com/mailman/listinfo/flholmes > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > flholmes-request@rootsweb.com > > You can reach the person managing the list at > flholmes-owner@rootsweb.com > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of FLHOLMES digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. To barbfrombama: In Holmesteading I found no Gunns, 7 Powells (James, Owen N., Randall L., Ruhane, W. R., W. W., Willie Mae), there were 33 Smiths. In Heart and History of Holmes County, I found two Gunns (Thomas and William) no Powells, and 36 Smiths. Holmesteading was published in 1986 and covers Florida's 27th County when it was carved out of Washington County, the Indians who were here first, the county seat at Cerro Gordo, Andy Jackson passing through, the War between the States, when the railroad came, the riverboat era, a total of 13 chapters, with names of officials, news items, voter's lists, one-room schools, lawlessness, county agents, home agents since 1912, roads, electricity, with the last chapter, Gone are the Simple Things. Carswell was bureau chief for the Pensacola News-Journal for many years, and was a noted historian, not only for Holmes County, but for the State. Can't think of anything else to tell you, but E. W. Carswell's column of people of the Panhandle was popular for many years and he was recognized as a noted historian. Heart and History of Holmes County by Anna Paget Wells includes history from when Holmes County was formed in 1848 to 1981, when she compiled articles from the Holmes County Advertiser, photos of families, and individual writing of herself and others. It has 360 pages, 229 pictures, stories--a great chunk of history as it was lived. It also includes first voters, jury names, civil officials, and Civil War veterans. The books are $45, including S&H.
