Hours of work have gone into it. It is now limiting its online hours, and it may soon be gone. I have talked to my congressmen, who are, incidentally, all Republicans. This should not be a Democrat/Republican issue. It really and truly has nothing to do with the class size amendment. The true and honest figures on that are not well known, and what ever they were would be split over 10 years. In his inaugural address this year, he said he wanted to empty the government buildings. That was not rhetoric, he meant it. The library is there, the funds for it are minimal in terms of a state budget, the archives are housed. Systems were recently added to keep the temperature and surroundings in a way to better preserve the archives. FSU's president, Dr. Wetherell, has publicly stated they can NOT handle the archives. Their funding is being cut drastically, as are all state university budgets. If the library is allowed to be turned over to a private company, there is not guarantee the items will be available like they are now. If they are privatized, they may be lost to us forever as genealogists. Washington State is closing theirs, but a recent letter from their Sec. of State to me gave hope that maybe they can stop it. The state of Virginia is starting along the same path. It will be a constant battle to save our libraries. England and Canada are working with our country to try to stop this trend of making libraries expendable. To the two who thought my post was political, perhaps you need to do some real reading up on what is going on. Both of my Republican congressmen here are really alarmed, and they do not like the fact that the Sec. of State here has already met with the librarians. The legislature, after all, must approve the budget. That is why we elected them. It is their job to approve it. I choose not to be on a list with so many people who are so angry and ready to jump on people. I was always taught that if you want to make a point with people, you should do it nicely. Now that I have made mine, I am going to unsub. I don't contribute that much to this list anyway. I do hope some of you can deal with your anger and face the reality of what is going on.
