    2. I have just joined this list hoping to learn something about the early settlers of Hillsborough County Florida. I thought it was supposed to be about genealogy. All I have read is chit-chat. Most lists discourage personal exchanges on their lists. And the subject line should include pertinent info like: names, dates and places as discussed in the post. If this is a genealogy list would you please list the names you are researching in Hillsborough County. I am interested in the early settlers of a small settlement named Mango and/or Brandon, Dover, Plant City - anything in east Hillsborough County. Rosa Lee

    3. Welcome! Our WEBB family arrived in Hillsborough Co, FL in 1945, when dad was transferred to MacDill AFB. We were housed in the old Maritime Homes military housing section, below sea level, on mosquito-infested, seashell crushed pavement in barracks styled apartments. It is now owned by the Tampa Port Authority and big boats dock there, but I still drive down now and again for memories. I remember it well. By 1950, we were in a brand new house in the newly formed Wellswood section. I left Tampa after graduation but returned in 1969 and have been here since. My aunt lives in Brandon, my good friend in Palm River, my brother in Citrus Park/Lutz, and these are special areas I like to search. And if you grew up here, you have many ties to Ybor City. Mine were of early days when it was grocery shopping, eating at the Columbia, movies, and visiting friends, etc. I am a volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, for Hillsborough County, FL. So, while my own "lines" are not FROM here, I have friends across the world who do. I love senior citizens and spend a lot of time talking with them. In that capacity I take a lot of notes and do a little of their genealogy, have a wonderful collection of stories, and I've learned a lot about the smaller and rural 'burbs of our county and early life. Now I find I'm into the era where I remember and lived thru things other people seek. The John Germany Tampa-Hillsborough County Library, downtown, has a Special Collections department on the second floor of the annex building and it's genealogical and historical housings are wonderful. They hold the Burgert Brothers photographic collection for early Tampa and obits and newspapers are on microfilm there and they are indexed in the TRAILS system (available to all thru their web-site.) They hold the Florida Combined Marriage, Death and Divorce Index microfische, many City Directories besides just Hillsborough County, county histories and genealogies, cemetery books, on and on. They won't look up for you but will guide you, or you can ask me or another RAOGK volunteer. I posted their website for you. Also check out USF's web-site. Their area history collection is great, free, open to the public. We have many local Family History Centers within the county and some are small, but some are unbelievably wonderful, and I've been to many across the U.S. You probably know that any one of them can get you anything you seek that the organization holds, and they'll have it for you within 3 weeks at a very minimal cost. Ybor's history is well-documented and always growing. There are many wonderful sites as well, just do a Google search, and you can order some super books with the Ybor history and families, through your inter-library loan service. I was on a Plant City mission (seeking genealogy) last week our librarian told me that Plant City had recently opened their new library (Bruton Library) and they house many items specific to that region. Since Plant City is on the eastern-most part of Hillsborough County, I have very often found records of those I seek mixed with the Lakeland, FL area, just over the county line. Was closer for residents to get to the Lakeland area for work, church, etc., than to drive all the way into downtown Tampa. And since Plant City is rural, many workers were able to find work in the citrus industries around Lakeland, when downtown Tampa was filling up with businesses. Here are just a few sites that I use the most. I hope they help you. Good luck.
