This may have been the case with your parents. They both were single, your father was in the Army and was transferred overseas. Your mother, being pregnant, young, single, etc., felt she could not properly care for a child. Also, your father may have been killed in the war. That's another possibility as to why you were given up for adoption. You may want to contact a local agency who helps people locate their adoption records. They are very skilled at what they do. A half-sister of mine used such an agency about ten years ago in Washington State and found our mother and me. It can work. Good luck. EXAMPLE: in the Army: LESTER C. Here is a site which gives a breakdown of Florida laws on adoption: http://laws.adoption.com/statutes/florida-laws.html You may be able to find something there. I was adopted in 1945 in Maryland and found out many years later that my adoption records were not sealed even though my birth record was (and still is). Using my adoption records I was able to find and establish contact with my birth mother and knew her for 15 years before she died. Contact Florida and ask for the non-identifying information. There may be something that will help you. Good luck. gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: averyds > Surnames: manley? > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.florida.counties.hillsborough/3308/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for my family.I was born Feb 12th 1945 in Tampa.I believe my mother was a telephone operator and my father was in the military. When I was about a month old,I was taken to Jacksonville Fla and adopted by Lonnie and Lillian Avery of Lake City Fla. > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Buffalo Avenue School was at 805 E. Buffalo Avenue, which translates into 805 E. Dr Martin Luther King Blvd today. The City of Tampa renamed the street in 1989. The 1931/1951 Sanborn map (you can see these online with a Tampa-Hillsborough County library card) shows Buffalo Avenue School on the block bounded to the north by E. Buffalo Avenue, to the east by Mitchell Avenue, to the south by Selma Avenue, and to the west by Taliaffero Avenue. Today, this is the southeast corner at the intersection of Taliaffero and MLK. It's also right at the MLK exit off I-275. The school is no longer there. The block is now occupied by a Sweetbay grocery store. The Hillsborough County Property Appraiser's website gives a construction date of 1997 for the grocery store, but I don't know at the moment when the school closed. Was someone in your family a teacher or student at this school?
