I just found a website for Cycadia Cemetery in Tarpon Springs, FL and there's a Julia Freed who was buried 8-20-1893 there. Thanks for the advise about re-ordering the death certificate. I was told that Pinellas County during 1889 time frame use to be Hillsborough County. I'll re-order and see what I can find out. Now if only I can find Fanny. Just forget about it. Some of the people who are the most critical make mistakes themselves such as posting there is not an obituary in a certain paper when it is indeed there, spelling things incorrectly, etc. Let's just get on with finding these folks and discovering the mystery. :) On a side note, If you have not made a second request for the death certificate you might want to try again. When I was trying to get the dc for my grandfather it took several tries. The first time I gave them the exact date, location and death certificate number taken from the Florida death records lists on Ancestry. They could not find it. The next time I just gave them the date and location. Still nothing. finally I just gave them his name and year...and viola!...they found it. So you never can tell. Don't give up. Don't beat yourself up over this misunderstanding. We have all been there done that. Sometimes when we have been researching a long time we tend to forget others might not be aware of information we need in our research. I know when I make a post I do not always put everything I have checked online especially if I am trying to locate the family itself. I have gotten some great tips/help from people over the years. I check the message boards to see if I can help and repay those kindnesses. Hopefully everyone does that sooner or later. Good luck in your search! The article reads that Gracie was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Freed. The article doesn't give the names of the parents and Gracie wouldn't have been an only child unless Fanny had died some time before. My request is for information on Fanny. If I can find out that she had died then I would feel more comfortable knowing that the article is defineately related to the right family. I also would like to know what happened to their mother, Julia. I requested the death certificate on Gracie, but it came back...unable to locate. I would love to know what happened to Fanny and her mother. ******************** Well, I was just about to post about the May 23, 1889 article in the Tampa Journal about the death of a Gracie Freed (of the right age), when I suddenly noticed that you were the one who had uploaded that article to Ancestry! I guess I'm puzzled by why you would say that the trail stopped in 1878 when you've got two 1880 census records and an 1889 newspaper article. When you post a query, it's always most helpful to others if you can indicate which documents you have already seen, so that others won't spend time looking for them. After that... there's no trail to know what happened to Julia, Gracie or Fannie. ******************** In the 1880 U.S. census, Julia Freed (age 32) and daughters Gracie (age 6) and Fanny (age 2) appear in the household of Flora Stevens (age 22) in Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan. That is, unless you haven't proven for sure some of your information that ties your Mary to the Thomas Co. GA one. I located Allen Womble with his wife Mary (age 24) living in Talbot Co. GA in the 1860 census. This Mary is 10 years younger than yours. Their two daughters, Mary E. (age 5) and Victoria (age 2) are there too. In the following 1870 census, Mary (age 34) and daughters Elizabeth (age 14), Pi?Key (age 11) and Georgia (age 8) are living together - Allen died in 1862 according to the pension application. I did not try to locate Mary in the 1880 census - she's probably there in Talbot Co. though. No sons in these two censuses. However, his name is ALLEN and so is your Mary's son - so perhaps this Allen is some sort of family member?? Talbot Co. GA is in the mid-western section of the state, 7 counties north of Thomas County. I located two other Wamble/Womble confederate soldiers - T.S. Wamble was born in Georgia in 1841 (rather young for your Mary's husband) and died March 23, 1923 in Stewart Co. GA. He enlisted in Stewart Co. The other is L.L. Wamble who was born in 1840 - again young for your Mary. He was from Colquitt Co. GA. Sorry. If I were you, I would look for the death records and work your way backward. Good luck. She is living in Talbot Co. GA on April 7th, 1891. Her husband's name was Allen M. Wamble/Womble and he served in Co. B of the 32nd Regt. of GA Volunteers. He died October 7, 1862, in a Confederate hospital in Savannah, GA, of jaundice or yellow fever. He and Mary were married November 22, 1854. Mary states that she has lived in Georgia since Dec. 11, 1834. Don't know if this is your Mary but it's possible as long as you know she was still living in GA in 1891. Author: pickinguptwigs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.florida.counties.hillsborough/3325.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The problem with "assuming" birth locations hinders your goal to discover more about your ancestors. I'm sure you, as well as I and perhaps other researchers trying to help, have spent time pouring over the 1860 census at Ochlocknee looking for your family. Now we know to "widen the net". To obtain a death certificate, you need to know when and where a person died. Different states had varying legal requirements as to when and where these records were mandatory to be recorded and filed. Cemetery indexes can be consulted (if they exist) and this is helpful if you find your ancestor because most cemetery markers or burial records will provide a date (approximate or exact) of the death. You can then check for a published obituary and a death certificate. Some older death certificates are online now but it just depends on the location and date. If a Civil War widow received a pension based upon her husband's service, the file would most likely be in his name. Unfortunately, you don't have the husband's name yet. Finding Mary in the 1860 census with her husband is a key piece of information. You might check for any Georgia Civil War soldier by the name of Womble/Wamble since the censuses record his childrens' birthplaces as Georgia or nearby neighboring states. There can't be that many so the next step would be to see if you can safely eliminate some of them by searching for them in the 1870 census to see if they belonged to other families rather than yours. HOWEVER, keep an open mind - the husband of Mary may have deserted her; or divorced and married someone else. Do you know where Marshall was born? His death certificate may state his birth location and his parents' names (including his mother's MAIDEN name) if known to the informant. And Marshall's children's birth certificates or death certificates may record where Marshall was born. My most important words of advice are to work your way backward by building on what you have already proven; and when posting a query - it is helpful to include the information you know and your sources, and also which sources have already been checked. It takes a lot longer and involves a great deal of thought, but it helps others to help you and it's worth it in the long run. Author: pickinguptwigs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.florida.counties.hillsborough/3325.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 1) Where was Mary enumerated in the 1860 census? I cannot find her in Ochlocknee, Thomas Co. GA yet you write that her children were born there. 2) How is it that you have this information of their exact birth locations? It may be helpful for other researchers to have these two bits of information. Also, the 1870 census shows the families enumerated on the census page as living "west of Ocklocknee River" with the nearest post office being Thomasville. SO....there is no contradiction here betw. where you stated that the children were born (Ochlocknee) and the following 1870 census...they were still living near the Ocklocknee River, not in Thomasville. When did Mary did and where? And have you obtained the death certificates of her children to see if they name their parents (including their mother's maiden name)?
