    3. Hi Doris, Read your request for pictures and wondered if you had tried http://www.headstonehunter.com There is someone in the Tampa area who will take pictures of headstones. Go to the above website, click on find a hunter, then Florida. Tampa is on page 4 of the find a hunter pages. You can email the person direct with your request. I have had really good luck with this site. So far have had 3 of my requests answered. Happy hunting, Bonnie

    2. debbi
    3. Hi listers - I am new to this list & to genealogy and would like to post the surname I am searching for. Here goes: CARLSON, Ethel "Callie" from Tampa, FL maiden name is BROWN. Ethel is my g.grandma's sister and I know she lived in Tampa as of 1947 and 1961. She married ? Carlson and had at least 1 son, named Robert. Her sister, my g.grandma, is Minnie "Alma" Bishop from IL & IN - Alma was born in Chicago & I guess it's safe to say that Ethel was also born there. Her father's name was Hiram Brown - don't know the mother's name. They are of American Indian heritage and I am desperately seeking any & all info on this family. If anyone knows of this family, I would LOVE to hear from you. Thanks so much - Deb from IL abney6@home.com

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: John L. Whitney To: FLHILLSB@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 11, 2000 12:32 PM Subject: RE:(FLHILLSB) Malone, Gregoreo,Hernandez, and Snodgrass Listers: Seeking information on the following persons listed on the 1920 Tampa Census: Thomas S(Sealy) Malone Grace Malone (his wife) Harry Degoreo (His brother in Law) (Digregorio??) Kate Hernandez (his sister-in-law) Oscar Hernandez (His nephew) Cecil Hernandez (His nephew) Minnie Snodgrass (His niece) I've made several assumptions (you know what that does). 1: Harry and Kate are brother and sister to Grace and the name should be DiGregorio as all three show their parents are from Italy. ( I use the spelling DiGregorio as there are no Degoreo's on any surname list I tried. 2: Obviously Oscar and Cecil are Kates Children (I found them on the SSDI) 3: Minnie Snodgrass is the eldest daughter of Gordon Dearwood Snodgrass and Rose Pauline Malone, Thomas's Sister FYI, Thomas S. Malone is a direct descendant from Wyannie Malone. His cousin is my ggrandmother. Any information or suggetions appreciated. John jwhitney@megabits.net

    1. [FLHILLSB] obituary lookup
    2. Paul Leiberton
    3. I posted an inquiry on the DeSoto county mail list and received a suggestion from someone that I make an inquiry on this list. ROBERT BIGGIE died in July 1985 while a resident of Arcadia, FL. I have written the library, twice I believe and enclosed a check, asking them for a copy of that obituary from their newspaper collection. No response. It was suggested that they may not have responded because they don't have the newspaper. One respondant to my inquiry told me that she had had success in locating an obituary for the Arcadia area by posting her request in this forum. I would glady pay someone to xerox a copy of an obituary. Is there someone who would be able to do this for me?

Kathy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- Kathy: There used to be a weekly newspaper in Brandon called The Brandon News, which was owned by The Courier News Corporation (now out of business). You might call the Brandon Public Library (sorry I don't know number, but area code 813) and see if someone might be kind enough to do a lookup and see if newspaper was still in existence in 1979. You could also try to get them to look in back issues of The Tampa Tribune (daily newspaper) if you have a date. I was talking with someone just a few weeks ago and she needed a lookup for The Tampa Tribune. Tampa Public Library has back issues, but will not do a lookup. The Tampa Tribune has a research department, however they want about $35 to do the lookup. WOW. This person finally re-entered her request on this same Hillsborough website asking for a volunteer willing to do a lookup at the Tampa Public Library. Last I heard, someone had promised to do this for her. Connie

    1. Re: [FLHILLSB] Orphange or children's home in Tampa
    2. MICHAEL MARTINEZ
    3. Suzanne, Below are several ideas. The ones toward the end may be your best bet though: This might be a shot in the dark, but you may want to check with the law library downtown and ask them if there is any reference book which would list the legally run orphanages that existed in Tampa in the 1920's. Another shot in the dark would be to call child and family services and see if they could at least point you in the right direction...you'll probably have more luck with the law library though as CFS is as busy and understaffed as any state's is. Another shot in the dark would be to call any of the existing adoption lawyers and see if they can suggest an office or location that might have that information. Shot #4 and then I'm out of ideas....ask someone to check a couple of the phone books available from the '20's ... they have them at the down town library and I think at the repository for University of South Florida... and see if there are any that are listed. The problem you are going to have .... as I understand if true of most adoptions ... is if you don't have a "real" date of birth and/or birth name. You might be able to go to the courthouse downtown and see if you can check the birth certificates for every male child born on a given day to see if one of them at least has the same first name as your father-in-law. Just thought of something else....is your father-in-law of hispanic heritage or Catholic? Not being nosy, but if such is the case, the Church might be the first stop you need to make. The oldest church that I can think of at the moment is the Catholic church that is downtown. I can't think of the name of it right off the top of my head, but for Catholic Church matters from that time frame, that would be where I would start. However, not all Hispanic's from during that era are Catholic. There was a relatively large population of Baptist Hispanics in the area then. My sister-in-law's husand's family was Baptist for several generations before he was born. There is also a Historical Society downtown now. I've never checked it out myself, but they seemed pretty friendly according to someone who has been down there. I've copied a bit of email that I received from them that I hope you can use. The Tampa Bay History Center is located at 225 South Franklin, across the street from the Tampa Convention Center. We face onto Franklin, and are in the Convention Center parking annex. Our phone number is 813-228-0097. Barbara Ware Tampa Bay History Center email: thistory@gte.net web site: http://www.tampabayhistorycenter.org Phone: 813-228-0097 Fax: 813-223-7021 Another thing is that some doctors back then handled the adoptions themselves so that they baby was transferred from the birth parent to the adoptive parents right there.
