Cheryl, Kathy, and others who responded to my request for employee records for this cigar factory, Thanks all. I live in Tampa and have Ybor City roots that go back to 1885 (at least). I am one of those who wished she'd asked more questions when grandparents were alive. USF, Ybor Museum, Tampa History Museum are all good suggestions. Thanks again for the quick responses! Also might check the Special Collections Department at the University of South Florida, Tampa campus. They have a lot of records for Ybor city clubs, etc. The website for USF has a link to Special Collections, and you can view the index of their holdings, and some of the photographs on file of members of the Cuban club, etc. Joyce MICHAEL MARTINEZ wrote: > Regarding factory records: > > The only place that I know of that might....and I mean might....at least > know where to go would be the Tampa History center in downtown Tampa. > > Well, I guess I can think of two. I was told, some time ago, that the library at University of South Florida has an extensive collection and I remember seeing or hearing something about the Tampa cigar industry at the Tampa Public Library. However, since my family research doesn't involve the history of the cigar industry, I've not had any reason to dig any deeper. I agree with Kathy, the Ybor City museum should be a great place to start, but keep in mind that many of the old cigar factories were in West Tampa. Regarding factory records: The only place that I know of that might....and I mean might....at least know where to go would be the Tampa History center in downtown Tampa. Well, I guess I can think of two. There is an Ybor City museum that might also. I am also interested in old cigar factory workers. My grandfather and his brother worked in the Morgan Cigar Factory in Ybor. Janie Bartels
I have recently learned that my gggrandfather, Jose PEREZ LLORENT, was one of the first "tabaqueros" (tobacco workers?) at the Fabrica de Martinez y Ybor on 9th Ave and 14th St. Does anyone on the list know if there is someplace in Tampa that might have old cigar factory records, specifically of employess? Thanks, Loretta

I want to locate an obituary for Henry Ellsworth Browning that died in Ruskin on October 24, 1983. Where would be the best place to contact to try to get his obituary? Thank you for your help. Jeanette in SC
Dear Listers, I would like to know if it is possible to write for a death record, circa 1930's, from Tampa. I went to the website for obtaining vital records from Hillsborough Co. and it states that you need to order by fax and include a copy of a state issued ID with signature. Do they mean the state of Florida, or the state that you live in? I live in Michigan. Can't I write a letter stating my request? Could someone clarify this for me? Thank you. Cathy, the obits here would be in the Tribune. They have an online archive site. The address is: http://archive.tampatrib.com/ Hope this helps. Have been skimming thru the e-mails concerning cemetery records for Hillsborough County. Had to go to Dallas, Texas yesterday for business. Had three hours to kill between appointments, found myself ten blocks away from the main library. Found 6 or 7 volumes labeled Hillsborough County Cemetery Records 1845 - 1945. Three volumes were of small cemeteries and was indexed in back. Two were of individual cemeteries, Myrtle Hill and Garden of Memories, which were also indexed as a book. Cant describe remaining as I did not get a chance to search them. My thoughts are that one might try inter-library loan for material from these books. Virginia Gibson
The Genconnect server is up and running again. Enjoy posting. Deborah Byrd
Also, be aware that there is a wonderful little genealogy library packed with Plant City (and should have some stuff on Dover) history on Collins Street. On Saturdays, they are open from 1-5pm. They are in the old Plant City Community Center, I think it was called. Wonderful people run the place, and they are ever so helpful. There is a Dover Cemetery behind Dover Baptist Church on Gallagher Road - according to the Hillsborough County Cemetery book, there are no Regan's in that cemetery. But the rural areas out there do have more cemeteries that they might be in. Have you tried an online search to see if there was an obit for them? You can do that through the internet at the Tampa Library online web site.
