Sally, The Tampa Tribune is the major newpaper for Hillsborough County. All death notices and most obits appear in the Tribune. The Tampa Public Library has all issues of the Trib on microfilm, which is how I've always retrieved copies. However, someone recently posted that these obits can be obtained online through the Tribune archives or the Tampa Library website. It would be great if that person would repost that info. I maintain The sites iScreven county Georgia and HIlls and Hernando in Florida and the S.C. religious dissenters 1670 - 1781 site, I have only visited Brooksville once. A good number of the GEnweb volunteers don't live in the counties that they maintain. One of the Georgia gurus is in hawaii. That is why we depend so much on local help getting data up. Okay all here is how the mailing list page will work. Please send me your Hillsborough county names in the following format. Capitalize surnames, include front names, give dates, and if you want to events. and towns in Hills county.if they were townies. Remember this page will NOT a query list, it will be for data sharing. Each of your email address wlll be included on the web page so you can write directly to each other. I woun't know to update your addys unless you tell me. Gett ready, set and type. I may be a little slow getting some of it up, so please be patient. Deborah Byrd
Deborah, it would be a great help for us to have a site like this. I'm not sure I understand how this works, I mean how you can be in Screven County and still work on this site for us (Hillsborough County). However you do it, thanks! ..Jeannette Tamborello > Subject: [FLHILLSB] mailing lists research. > Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 21:00:09 -0700 > From: "Deborah Byrd" <dbyrd@lightcom.net> > To: FLHILLSB-L@rootsweb.com > > I have an idea floating in the back of my mind how to help you all make > connections. please visit > http://www.rootsweb.com/~gascreve/scremail.htm and let me know if ya'll > want such a page set up for hills county. Searching for ARVID IVER CARLSON. Husband of my g.aunt Ethel Carlson. They moved from Chicago to TAMPA in approx. 1947. I have been searching for what ever happened to ARVID after the death of his wife Ethel in 1964. I don't know if he remained in Tampa or if he moved - seemed like he disappeared from the face of the earth. Ethel's remains were "shipped" back to IL for burial. He is not buried with her. Also, STILL searching for the records of the now defunct Duval Funeral Home - those also seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Any info on ARVID IVER CARLSON and Duval's records would be greatly appreciated. Searching for info about John Matson (1895-1975) and wife Gertrude Klemme (dates unknown). They were married 1926 and divorced 1936. I am searching for info on a daughter, name unknown. In later years, John Matson lived on E. Seward Avenue. Suzanne Collins Matson
I would like to know if someone could find and make copies of 4 obituaries. I have the name of the paper, page and the dates. They are all located on microfilm. thanks Leslie
Rootsweb has requested that large lists such as this one do not have roll calls. I do belive they are helpful, but..... Lists of last names with out dates, places, and front names are not very effective. So, if someone wishes to send names asking for help, please include both names, dates and places. Otherwise it is a roll call. List owner Deborah Byrd
Deborah, Are you aware of the database on the Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library system already? Using the THOR system you can search for obit references in the Tampa Tribune [from around 1905 to about 1978] on TRAILS. The later years are indexed in books and files in the Library reference collections. Earlier years, are also in books in the Library reference collection, these were done by Julius J. Gordon. Gordon's indexes 1893-1904 are available at the Florida Heritage Collection: http://susdl.fcla.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/~fdl/fdlcgi?SF45165245%2Fpdf Lok under deaths. The Florida Heritage Center also has Gordon's "Florida Peninsula 1855-1871" and "Sunland Tribune 1877-1883". Check the Florida Heritage Collection: http://susdl.fcla.edu/fh/ For THOR go to: http://scfn.thpl.lib.fl.us/thpl/eresources/thor/ for directions and links. If there were other papers in Hillsborough, the problem is finding copies of them. I have received some email for people volunteering to help get Florida data on the internet. I have thought about this for a while and have a couple of suggestions. I will coordinate efforts from Idaho if anyone wants to help. Since we have so many wanting to know when their relative's obit appeared in the newspaper, I think an index by the deceased's name, newspaper, issue and date would be a valuable resource. Those seeking obits would know the information they need to get a copy of the obit. I could keep track of who is doing what month, and year, and paper so others wouldn't do the same paper. The volunteer would have to arrange their schedule to visit the paper of their choice to review the obits. This information would be transcribed into a computer file. Those that would work best are an excel compatible spread sheet, or Notepad/Wordpad or other Microsoft Word compatible program with a txt, rtf, or doc file extension. Let me know if any of you want to participate. Deborah Byrd
The family history center on Fletcher Avenue is OK...its kind of small though. To be honest, I haven't been able to use them very much....the census for Hillsborough are not indexed that I've been able to find and the microfilm copies are hard to read...I don't think Hillsborough was too interested in using completely literate census takers early on. The staff though are incredibly nice, but they are a rotating staff...or last time I checked....so you may not always have someone in there that is knowledgeble about the collections or knows how to work the computer programs. You just kind of have to go there when you have a list of items you would want to look for and then go down the list. It could prove to be a wasted trip if you only go there with one thing to look for. Also, they have age restrictions....leave the kids someplace else. Kathy, I feel your frustration. Everywhere I turn there are Martinezes, Garcias, Perezes, and Dominguezes. Its worse than Smith! Then there is the two name problem--sometimes my relatives listed themselves with their father's name and sometimes with their mother's. I get so confused that I don't know if I'm coming or going--looking for a father's name or a mother's name. And not being able to get information from Cuba is simply torture! I am hoping to find a few new leads with the Martinez y Ybor Factory--but I have a feeling that early employment records are scarce. I actually have two Martinez lines--one is my paternal great great grandmother and the other is my aunt by marriage--I haven't really pursued her line, but it is an old Tampa family actively involved in politics and Spanish culture in this area. Good luck in your hunt -- have you been to the Family History Center on Fletcher? Loretta
