I too would be much interested in a cemetary/grave listing for HIllsborough. Does anyone have a Book of the Dead to do lookups? -----Original Message----- From: Bushy Hartman [mailto:mihartman@InfoAve.Net] Sent: Friday, November 02, 2001 6:51 AM To: FLHILLSB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [FLHILLSB] Colon & Woodlawn Cemetery query Hello all, I am having a bit of a problem that I am hoping someone can help me out. Juan FERNANDEZ death certificate says Colon Cemetery on it but the dates match the Woodlawn Cemetery dates. born: 16 Mar 1878; died: 26 Aug 1949. Would anyone have a cemetery book that could confirm the cemetery that Juan married to Mercedes is located and the directions to the cemetery? I sure would appreciate your help. "HILLSBOROUGH county, Florida Cemeteries: 1840-1985" Colon Cemetery Fernandez, Juan B. 24 Jun 1877/18 Nov 1965 double stone with Josephina Fernandez (this is not the correct person, nor does the dates match the death certificate I have) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Woodlawn Cemetery Fernandez, Juan Husband of Mercedes Fernandez 1878/1949 Fernandez, Mercedes Wife of Juan Fernandez 1873/1914 (now this is the right one from the other documents I have collected and the 1900 census) Then I received from Sheila Taylor the following: Tampa Tribune Article in 1901 Fernandez, Candido, Age 23, by suicide on 24 Sep 1901, Burial Woodlawn Cemetery, TWT 26 Sep 1901. Fernandez, Candido, age 34, kills sweetheart, Jovita Perez, then kills self on 24 Sep 1901. Buried Woodlawn TWT 26 Sep 1901. (the ages don't match on these two articles but must be the same person) Juan had a brother Candido age 19 in the 1900 census was born in Oct 1881, which doesn't coincide with the dates on the articles either but errors have been seen in newspaper articles before. Possibly the Woodlawn Cemetery is indeed the correct location and not Colon. Possibly the death certificate is in error. Gary Don Crow born July 1, 1961 to Shelby Jean and Luther Andrew Crow died on July 9, 1961 in Plant City, FL. Is there someone that could look up his birth and death announcements and funeral notice in the newspapers and send me a copy? I would be happy to pay reasonable expenses. If anyone runs across his burial site I would like to know where it is also. I am trying to find out for his younger sister who has no idea where her brother is buried. The father is dead and the mother has alzheimer's. Thank you, Paula http://www.geocities.com/huntingkin/
10/14/01 Good news from Plant City, Florida . Thanks for helping us spread the good word! Shelby Bender, Volunteer Director Quintilla Geer Bruton Archives Center "Digging for Gold...Searching for your Family Roots" Take up your gold shovels and put on your work gloves! Searching for your "family roots" has just become a little easier at the local genealogy and family history library, The Quintilla Geer Bruton Archives Center, located in the historic 1914 Plant City High School Community Center at 605 North Collins Street, Plant City, Florida. The Archives Center has just completed a one year project of converting their genealogy and family history book collection to a Dewey Decimal Classification system and computerized database catalog that is now available through the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative catalog. The Archives Center catalog will become available for on-line use on October 15, 2001. Just go to http://www.hcplc.org and look for the Catalog of the Quintilla Geer Bruton Archives Center. The work was completed by the Archives Center volunteers and staff of the library system and consortium. The Archives Center collection, containing over 3500 titles, remains a private non-circulating collection. The collection focuses on the Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida and Southeastern United States areas. Limited research requests will be handled by the volunteer staff via our newest resource media, email @ qcenter@tampbay.rr.com In addition, staff and patrons of the center will have the use of three new computers with Internet access. Genealogy on the Internet has gained much attention over the past few years. The Internet provides a wide array of online resources including library catalogues, databases, message boards, family web sites, the Social Security Death Index and many more valuable research sources. The catalogue conversion project, valued at over $25,000, was supported by a grant through the Library Services and Technology Act in the category of Linking Libraries and Communities and local match provided by the Quintilla Geer Bruton Archives Center of the East Hillsborough Historical Society, the City of Plant City and Time Warner Cable. The grant partners included the volunteers of the Quintilla Geer Bruton Archives Center, selected staff of Bruton Memorial Library, Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and the State Library of Florida. Please visit the Archives Center soon. The Archives is open from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 1 – 5 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.
Hi All, Thought it might be time to repost the family we are researching; Martin Derious Patterson (grtgrdfather and brick wall) was orphaned at a very young age and raised by his older sister-Ansy Patterson. "Ansy" may be a nickname but for what we don't know. Martin was never completely sure of how old he was so the dob we have of 1845 may not be correct. We have no dates for Ansy but we do know she married a Dunn in FL. This Patterson line may have originated in GA-then went to TX ,met up with the Perkins family (Martin later married Catherine (Carrie) Perkins Stone- a widow from TX with one daughter named Laura ) and then on to FL (Alachua and then Pinellas/Hillsborgh)around 1866 or earlier. Does anyone have a Patterson couple that died young and left children behind? there may have been other siblings too. Or a Patterson family that was raising a Martin (around 5 yrs old in 1850's) and older sister? Is there a Cemetery Book listing gravesites available for Hillsborough County? Thanks Bob
Thanks to all who answered my question about the star. The star is the Eastern Star and is a ladies division of the Masonic group. At one time they were supposedly a christian group, then recognized as a pagean group because of the witch days, then a secretive group later on. The masonic group wasnt talked about much at all. The story that was just recently passed on to me is a good example of what the masonic group was like. A person was going down a street to fast and pulled over by an officer. The officer asked the person something and when the person knew the special handshake of masonic group, the officer let this person go without a ticket. So if anyone is wondering what this group was, this is just one piece of it. I have been told not to delve into finding out what the masonic group was but this was in the 1930's and have no worries about it now. take care Leslie
The Masons are still active. The organization is the inheritor of much of the Knights Templar tradition. They claim spiritual descendancy from the Masons who built Solomon Temple. Many of the early leaders of the United States were members of the organization such as George Washington and many of his aides. It was very influential in the settlement of new lands. Members helped each other establishe business and farmsteads. They kept meticulous records. The Lodge in Autauga county AL has allowed extracts of their membership records to be used for research which has helped establish death dates and years people lived in the county. Deborah Byrd
