John Washington Wells born 21 January 1886 in Hamilton Co., Florida son of Jacob Holden Wells and Mary Beard Freeman. Mary Beard Freeman Wells born 18 August 1848 died 3 September 1933. Perhaps, the paupers grave at Limona cemetery that you mention is that of Mary Beard Freeman Wells. A death certificate might reveal whether she was buried there. John W. Wells & Clara Vashti Hiers were married 10 November 1910 in Savannah, Georgia. They had Sarah Frances, John Desmond and June Ouida Wells. They made their home in Palm River, Hillsborough Co., Florida.
Rosa Lee, do U have any information about the Rolling W Ranch that was on Hwy 60 on the north side of the road, back when it was 2 lanes, just east of Hwy 301? It was owned by Dewey and Ruth Wilbanks before they moved in2 town to the NE corner of Neptune Avenue and Frankland Rd just north of H. B. Plant Highschool. Mr Wilbanks was very involved in cattle, horses and i also believe a hardware/tack/feed store that was on E. 7th Ave. in Ybor City area. I do have some info and photos from the 50 and early 60's. Just thought that i would let U know. Hope this email finds U safe and well, Bon, Tampa Native
Yes. James T. Webb is my brother. He is now Lt. Col. James T. Webb, but still my "little brother." I claim the rank of age. Jim married Cathy Llanes and they had two sons, (my nephews) Chad and Donovan. As Jim & Cathy were divorced, I got to keep them while Jim was learning to fly F-16s at MacDill AFB many years ago. I now have two great-neices, Alyssia Brook Webb and Winter Webb (Jim's granddaughters). Jim married Gail Kelly-Webb in the 1980s. Clara Vashti Hiers married John Washington Wells and they were the parents of many children, only three of whom survived, the last, their "surprise baby," in their late 40s, was June Ouida (Wells) (Mrs. Oscar Llanes). She is one of my dearest friends. She has given me a lot of the history and stories of early Palm River. She is now battling Alzheimer's disease and doesn't always remember a lot, so I'm grateful for the 30 yr friendship we had and the stories and notes I took. After Jim & Cathy divorced, Ouida and I stayed friends and I love her dearly. She taught me a lot about Cuban cooking. I did her Hiers line and made several trips to Walterboro, SC, finally found the Hiers book in Gainesville, FL (they have three). There are supposedly only 8 left floating around in the libraries, the rest are in private collections. We blew a bundle and just photocopied the book! The Wells line has been another matter. I take care of Ouida's aunt and uncle's graves at Limona. Her grandmother is supposedly buried there in a pauper's grave. The family remembers going there and outlining it with seashells, the way they used to do in the 1930s. Sheriff Walter Hiers was Ouida's uncle (her mother's brother), and many of the Hiers family were Deputy Sheriffs in Hillsborough County in the 20s & 30s. Ouida's parents rented one of his properties in the country and took care of his chicken farm. He liked Ouida best of all the kids because she always stuck her tongue out at him. He said it showed real "spunk" for a kid to do that, especially to an officer of the law. I stay in touch with Cathy's brothers, especially Javal, a computer whiz. How are you connected or related? Rosa what names are you looking for? And around what dates?
Are your Hutchinsons Black? I am related to a Lewis and Harriet Hutchinson of Putnam, FL. Their children scattered around FL. Their sons were named John Enoch Geo Sam and Will. temdc
No, we're white. I've traced my American ancestors back to Pennsylvania in 1769 where John Hutchison married Letitia Wright and eventually fought with the British after moving to South Carolina. His descendants went on to Georgia, Alabama, and then to Florida. My father was Lewis Benjamin Hutchinson, b. in Hillsborough Co in 1908, married C. Irene Van Alstine in 1930, and died in Brandon in 1992. Sue, Thank you for being a member of Randon Acts of Genealogical Kindness and volunteering your time. I was wondering if by chance you know of a James T. Webb who married Cathy Llanes ? I also have a Clara Hiers who married a John W. Wells. Would these be your interests ? Sincerely, Grace Patterson
Annette, I don't have any information about your Martha Simmons. I do not think she was a daughter of John Frederick Simmons, Sr. and first wife Mary Kelly. Some of his older children are buried at Hopewell.
Rosa Lee, thank you so much for offering a look up for me about Walter Yates for whom the school was named. Good luck with your project. Sincerely, Grace Patterson
I have received several notices of bounced emails this weekend. So just as a reminder to those of you who have limited amount of email space on your internet provider's server, check your space available. If a message from the list bounces 7 times in a row because the IP's server says your e- mail inbox is full, the mailing list robot janitor assumes that the addy is bad and drops your name from the mailing list. This is a normal maintenance activity that occurs on all mailing list servers. Thank you Deborah Byrd List Mom
Yates Elementary in Brandon on Kingsway was named after Walter Yates. I might be able to find some info on that for you - if you don't havde it. If you have the Yates lineage I would really like to have it. I would like to put something together about the early settlers of East Hillsborough Co., Brandon, Mango, Valrico, Thonotosalla, Balm, Riverview, Gibsonton, Seffner, Plant City, Cork, etc. Rosa Lee
Rosa Lee, My dad, Lewis B. Hutchinson, was born in 1908 to Zenobia Ward and James Rabb Hutchinson on the property which later became part of the Brandon Airport. They were neighbors to "Grandma" Dora Pratt, Willie and Miss Sadie. No, they weren't related... we just "respectfully" called her "grandma". I graduated in 1952 from Brandon. Was just there for my 50th Reunion, which was attended by 46 classmates. Were Oliver and Marguerette your relatives? I agree with you about the"Wiregrass" books. They are wonderful, and it would be great to put together something even faintly resembling them. Best of luck to you, and if I can help, let me know. I am looking for families that homesteaded land or just lived in this area in the 1800's. What got me interested in this is that I learned that the Pratt Family homesteaded 80 acres in Brandon in the 1860's - where the Brandon Airport used to be. Some of the Pratts still live around there. I found this out when I submitted the name of Miss Sadie Pratt to be the name of one of the many schools being built in this area. She taught at Mango Elementary for, I believe, 30 consecutive years. I graduated from Mango Junior High from the 9th grade in 1953. Then graduated the 12th grade from Brandon High in 1956. My mother, Effie J. Clark Glass, wrote a history book about Mango. I have all the volumes except #10 of "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia". It would be good to have something like this for East Hillsborough Co. I have Hiers relatives in Tampa. If I can help with this let me know. Welcome! Our WEBB family arrived in Hillsborough Co, FL in 1945, when dad was transferred to MacDill AFB. We were housed in the old Maritime Homes military housing section, below sea level, on mosquito-infested, seashell crushed pavement in barracks styled apartments. It is now owned by the Tampa Port Authority and big boats dock there, but I still drive down now and again for memories. I remember it well. By 1950, we were in a brand new house in the newly formed Wellswood section. I left Tampa after graduation but returned in 1969 and have been here since. My aunt lives in Brandon, my good friend in Palm River, my brother in Citrus Park/Lutz, and these are special areas I like to search. And if you grew up here, you have many ties to Ybor City. Mine were of early days when it was grocery shopping, eating at the Columbia, movies, and visiting friends, etc. I am a volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, for Hillsborough County, FL. So, while my own "lines" are not FROM here, I have friends across the world who do. I love senior citizens and spend a lot of time talking with them. In that capacity I take a lot of notes and do a little of their genealogy, have a wonderful collection of stories, and I've learned a lot about the smaller and rural 'burbs of our county and early life. Now I find I'm into the era where I remember and lived thru things other people seek. The John Germany Tampa-Hillsborough County Library, downtown, has a Special Collections department on the second floor of the annex building and it's genealogical and historical housings are wonderful. They hold the Burgert Brothers photographic collection for early Tampa and obits and newspapers are on microfilm there and they are indexed in the TRAILS system (available to all thru their web-site.) They hold the Florida Combined Marriage, Death and Divorce Index microfische, many City Directories besides just Hillsborough County, county histories and genealogies, cemetery books, on and on. They won't look up for you but will guide you, or you can ask me or another RAOGK volunteer. I posted their website for you. Also check out USF's web-site. Their area history collection is great, free, open to the public. We have many local Family History Centers within the county and some are small, but some are unbelievably wonderful, and I've been to many across the U.S. You probably know that any one of them can get you anything you seek that the organization holds, and they'll have it for you within 3 weeks at a very minimal cost. Ybor's history is well-documented and always growing. There are many wonderful sites as well, just do a Google search, and you can order some super books with the Ybor history and families, through your inter-library loan service. I was on a Plant City mission (seeking genealogy) last week our librarian told me that Plant City had recently opened their new library (Bruton Library) and they house many items specific to that region. Since Plant City is on the eastern-most part of Hillsborough County, I have very often found records of those I seek mixed with the Lakeland, FL area, just over the county line. Was closer for residents to get to the Lakeland area for work, church, etc., than to drive all the way into downtown Tampa. And since Plant City is rural, many workers were able to find work in the citrus industries around Lakeland, when downtown Tampa was filling up with businesses. Here are just a few sites that I use the most. I hope they help you. Good luck. I worked with a deputy Hutchinson any relation? ............................................................................ ..................................... One more thing. I plan to include the Simmons' and the Hutchinsons in my research. I think I remember an article in the Tampa Tribune about the Simmon genealoby. I probably clipped it. Finding it will be the problem. Check the message to Grace. I plan to go to the courthouse and look up homestead records. Maybe sometime this week. Thanks for the offer. Rosa Lee

I am interested in all people living here and homesteading property in the 1800's. I plan to make a trip to the courthouse to check the records. Rosa Lee
