Author: bluecrushonbay Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.florida.counties.hillsborough/3031.3.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Cousin Jasper, That is really interesting that you descend from James Cromartie on one side and Patrick on the other side of your family! My Mother's Grandmother was a Cromartie, Eliza Cromartie Mixon, daughter of Alexander Cromartie (b. 1831), son of William Cromartie (b. 1802), son of Alexander Cromartie (b. 1772). So, I guess your ancestor, James Cromartie (b. 1810) was a younger brother of my ancestor, William, born in 1802 in Bladen Co. Have you ever attended one of the reunions? I would like to go sometime, as I've never been to that area. A gentleman, Milton Smith sent me some nice photos of the old Alexander Cromartie (1772) plantation and other photos like the mill on a pond where they made cornmeal. The reason I posted on Hillsborough County site is I've discovered that my Mother's Great Uncle William John Cromartie and wife Grace are buried there. He was younger than Eliza Cromartie, my great grandmother. If you want to share more we can. I can probably locate those photos also. They are on a zip disk. William John Cromartie (b. 1874), grandson of Wm Cromartie (1802), and wife Grace (1882) are buried in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Tampa. After sending for W. J Cromartie's death certificate, it turns out he has a grandson that is probably living. He would be John David Cromartie Jr. probably born in the 40s. I'd like to get in touch with him, but haven't located him yet. Regards, Cousin Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am descended from 2 of his brothers; the oldest, James and the youngest, Peter Patrick. James's son Luther and Peter Patrick's daughter Julia Clark are my great grand parents. Author: wpanne Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.florida.counties.hillsborough/31.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I know this is an old post but in case you haven't found the answer yet I just read this from an old newspaper. It caught my eye because I had a cousins named Taylor. anne Friday, December 25, 1903 ANOTHER RAILWAY HORROR. COL. J. N. TAYLOR OF THIS PLACE LOSES HIS LIFE IN AN ATTEMPT TO BOARD A MOVING TRAIN AT PLANT CITY. This community was horrified Wednesday afternoon about sundown by a telegraphic message from Plant City stating that Col. Jasper N. Taylor of this place had been killed at that place by a moving train which he had attempted to board for the purpose of returning to Tampa to rejoin his wife with whom he left here that morning to go to Clearwater to spend the holidays with relatives. The news carried sadness to every one who heard it and many were loath to believe it until his mangled remains reached here at midnight accompanied by his sorrowing wife whose anticipations of a joyful family visiting had been so ruthlessly shattered by the accident. The particulars of the affair seem, from the several versions given, to be that when he and Mrs. Taylor reached Ybor City he discovered that he had lost Mrs. Taylor's purse containing forty dollars or more. He informed the conductor of his train who arranged for him to return to Dover (where for some purpose he had got off the car) on a freight train which was passing to search for it. There it was not found so he came on to Plant City where he had also left the cars as they were standing at the depot. No findings of the missing purse being found there, the supposition is that he gave it up as lost and wired a bank in Tampa to furnish Mrs. Taylor with money and also wired her to return to Plant City after getting it and that they would change their route. Then he seems to have changed his mind again, presumably from the fact that an extra freight train passed southward, offering an unexpected opportunity of rejoining his wife at Tampa. This he attempted to board while it ! was in motion and it is said the bar or rail he grasped, broke and he fell under the wheels. His head, body and limbs are said to have been horribly mashed and mutilated and death was evidently almost instantaneous. He had been a resident of this place for a number of years, a lawyer by profession and for quite a while was local attorney for the A. C. L. R. Co. and enjoyed a fair practice of a general nature. He was kind hearted towards all, a warm friend, implacable in opposition to those with whom he differed. He leaves a widow and a nephew here to mourn his death to whom we extend our condolence in their sore bereavement. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
