Jim A stray thought: RE: common law marriages : in college, I took a course in Business Law that was as it turned out, taught by a practicing lawyer, sometimes in the class, he would interject some interesting thoughts: as in one day when he commented that if any of us males in the class ever had a female " in the mood" had convinced her to go to a motel, and to spend the night together, to be careful about the rules for "common Law" marriages in what ever state the two of you were in at the time, and how you registered at the motel, otherwise, he cautioned that in the morning, technically you might actually be married to the woman. I have checked out the Fl. index for marriages - entire state- this is why I was wondering if the fellow was in the service -where might the marriage have been recorded- ? same thing for Betty Heathcoe Ussery- one would think that the USSERY side of the line would know- I was told once that he ( Lamar ) was never married to anyone but the woman he is or was currently married to - and then it was said that the whole entire family thought she had known she was sick when she married him and should have been ashamed of herself- she died with cancer- she found she had cancer about the same time she found she was going to have a baby, refused treatment to save the child and they both ended up dead- but I was told they thought she already knew and married the dude anyway- DUH- and then they tried to tell me they did not know of a Betty- Now what did all this sound like to you guys- but yet no one seems to know where they married- PS- everyone is now gone- no one left to ask that will tell me or might know- > If the grandparents were still alive, the newly-divorced or widowed fella > took the child/children home to mama or a married sister, to help him > raise the kids. U do not have to be legally married to be in a common law marriage: Common-law marriage (or common law marriage), sometimes called informal marriage or marriage by habit and repute is, historically, a form of interpersonal status in which a man and a woman are legally married. The term is often mistakenly understood to indicate an interpersonal relationship that is not recognized in law. In fact, a common law marriage is just as legally binding as a statutory or ceremonial marriage in some jurisdictions — it is just formed differently. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
