I am aware quite well of the Solomon in Marion. I have an entire family file in FTW devoted to him and his three wives. He was born in 1786 and died 1846, Marion county. End of story. He did not move out of SC. The SC archives does not have a Solomon Owens in their pay rolls for state troops for W o'1812, BUT the National Archives' index of W o' 1812 Compiled Service Records for SC lists a Solomon Owens of the 5th Regiment, Keith's SC Militia. These may not have been state troops but rather raised under authority of the Feds, like the Florida Militia in which my GGgrandfather (Solomon's son) served in the Second Seminole war. That would be the difference. I am waiting to get the Compiled Service records from NARA, which I acctually requested several weeks ago just hoping it was there. Am not really sure who this Solomon is, I do hope that some indication is made WHERE he enlisted; that would help determine who it is. I suspect that Solomon of Marion would be a little old to serve in the War of 1812 (in his 30's) as a private. Florida does not have a record of a Solomon Owens applying for a pension for service in the War of 1812. It is quite probable, however, that my Solomon would not have qualified for a pension due to his real estate and personal property holdings. If the War of 1812 units are microfilmed like WBTS units, each unit (regiment) is on one or more rolls of microfilm, with officers listed then enlisted men regardless of company listed aphabetically for the entire regiment. One would have to obtain use of the unit's microfilm rolls to search for all Owens. The NARA will only search for one named individual when you request a search for military records with Form 80 (the only one used.). There probably is a microfilmed index of ALL SC servicemen for War of 1812, listed aphabetically which also indicates the unit of each man. That's probably not in your local genealogy library, though. Don't know if NARA would search the index for Owens' and their respective units. Might have to make a special request. I did get a copy of the orginal bounty roll of my GGuncle's WBTS cavalry company (Solomon's grandson)---for six bucks, no less. I bet no orginal records from 1812 can even be touched, now, much less copied. Let's see what turns up on the service record. Will keep you informed as I get stuff myself. Scott
