My g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth J. King Moore Speer, was a school teacher at the Concord School in Concord, Gadsden Co, FL about 1860. My g-grandmother, Sarah Jane (Sallie Ann) Moore Alderman McElvy, attended the Shelfer School located about two miles southeast of Havana, Gadsden Co, FL on State Road 153. My g-g-grandfather, Abner Chester, was a Trustee at Scotts Mill and his son, Samuel Chesrer, was a school teacher there. I don't know where Scotts Mill is, but I assume it was in or near Concord where they lived. My aunt, Ina Rosemond Chester Watson, took special courses in Quincy, Gadsden Co, FL to obtain her teacher's certificate, but she taught in Woodville, Wakulla Co, FL. It was about 1920 when she took the courses. The above are only a few of many who were involved in the Florida education systen and most of my ancestors and family attended the Gadsden Co, FL schools. I attended Havana School in Havana, Gadsden Co, FL between 1946-1958. I am especiall interested in the Concord School in Concord, Gadsden Co, FL where my mother, Jane R. Chester Yon attended between the years of 1924-1934. I hope I'm not imposing, but any information that you can provide me with regarding these people and/or the Florida education system would be greatly appreciated. I will be happy to pay for any costs involved. Please forgive me for being long-winded. Genealogy causes that. Thanks! Can someone help this great friend of mine...Thanks Betty Reply to: bbuchman@email.msn.com (bbuchman) This is a possibility that I will be in Quincy in a few weeks. Where is a good place to find records of the Samuel Barron Stephens family? He was a colonel in the Civil War. His daughter Mary Ann married George Zeigler. I have all the census records. I was hoping to find something in a local library that I wouldn't be able to find in this county. Sincerely, Beryle

Have you seen his name in your local historical records. Thanks, Jerry Braddock Charleston, SC
Hello List, My name is Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Yon Gerlits and I was born and raised in Havana, Gadsden Co, FL. I was born in 1941 and went to the one and only school in Havana (at the time) between the years of 1947 and 1958. I am researching my family history and hope to write a book on it, also. My mother's family settled in the Havana/Concord (Coonbottom) area about 1825. Some lived in the different areas of the county...... Hinson, Quincy, etc. Listed below is my lineage. Chester lineage: g-g-g-grandparents: Abel Chester & Sarah Unknown g-g-grandparents: Abner Chester & Roseanne Unknown g-grandparents: George Henry Chester & Melissa Johnson grandparents: Oliver Noah Chester & Lillian McElvy parents: Jane Chester & John (Jake or J.C.) Calvin Yon me: Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Yon & Valentine L. Gerlits, Jr. McElvy Lineage: g-g-g-grandparents: William McElvy & Barbara (Barbary) Reeves g-g-grandparents: Lawson Gamble McElvy & Julia Margaret Booth g-grandparents: Albert Booth McElvy & Sarah (Sallie Ann) Jane Moore grandparents: Lillian McElvy & Oliver Noah Chester parents: Jane Chester & John (Jake or J.C.) Yon me: Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Yon & Valentine L. Gerlits, Jr. Moore Lineage: g-g-grandparents: Charlie Moore & Elizabeth J. King g-grandparents: Sarah (Sallie Ann) Jane Moore & Albert Booth McElvy grandparents: Lillian McElvy & Oliver Noah Chester parents: Jane Chester & John (Jake or J.C.) Yon me; Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Yon & Valentine L. Gerlits, Jr. Many of the above were born, lived and died in the Havana/Concord (Coonbottom) area. I am researching all of the above surnames and hope to hear from other researchers and/or "cousins" who are interested in the same families. I have quite a lot of info and am willing to share with others. Of course, I'm always looking for more info, also. Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL
My grandparents, John H. & Roseann Yon are listed in the 1910 Federal Census with their children. My father, John C. is listed as being one month old. (He was born on March 10, 1910 in Jackson Co, FL.) The census was taken on April 18th in Jackson Co, FL, Precinct 4, Richter. I am reasonably certain that my father was born there, but I cannot find it on a map. They are listed in the same place on the 1920 Federal Census - Jackson Co, FL, Precinct 4, Richter. They are listed on the 1935 Florida State Census as living in Jackson Co, FL, Precinct 4, Cottondale. Is Richter and Cottondale the same place? Did the name change from Richter to Cottondale? Are they two separate places near each other? Can anyone help??? Thanks! Liz Gerlits Palm Bay, FL
