Janet: So what you are saying is that at least Thomas (yours) and Solomon (maybe mine) arrived in Orangeburg/Barnwell three years after the Rev War and received lands grants at nearly the same time. They apparently came from whereever they came from pretty much together. Might they have been Rev War vets from VA or NC? Like I said, I found a mention of a Solomon Owens in Colonial NC, yet unconfirmed nor cited. Solomon would have been in his thirties during the Revolution, and if he were a prominent planter (in whereever he was then) he likely would have been an officer (or at least my WBTS sense tells me this). Don't really have much experience in researching Rev War service. What do you think? Where do we go from here? Still need to prove Solomon of Gadsden was Solomon the younger of Barnwell. Scott

Subj: Re: Articles in Newspaper Date: 12/2/99 1:04:41 PM Eastern Standard Time From: tcnews@gtcom.net (Mary Leah Williams) To: BettyMaeS@aol.com Betty, Unfortunately, at the time the articles were typeset we were having computer difficulties, therefore, they are not saved in a format we could e-mail you. However, you are welcome to use them if you want to re-type them from your newspapers. I need a volunteer to type up these lenghty articles for the Gadsden Co FL web page. As you can see we have their permission. The Articles were about the Fennell clan women. Ora Bell Parham, Jessie Bradley and Elmira Jackson. All had worked at the Florida State Hospital and one had operated a Hotel and just a wealth of information. Kathy S Johnson had published a picture of the "colored" workers 1923 at the FL State Hospital. From that picture she was told about the women who were still living and went out to interview them. Reply-to: marthab@nemaine.com (Martha Black) I am trying to find the name of my grgrgrandfather. He was the father of Francis Marion Wells, b. 1847 in Georgia and died 10/03/1928 and buried in Gadsden County Florida (The cemetery is identified as #28 on the Gadsden Cemetery listing). He married Sarah Catherine Coker in 1873 in Florida. Francis Marion Wells served in the Battle of Natural Bridge, War Between the States, in Florida. I hope to hear from family researchers.

Please reply to Patricia Dreiss e-mail pdreiss@stic.net I am trying to find the place and date of birth of my great-grandpa, William TODD. He served in the CSA and there are the prisoner records from National Archives, as well as the Widow's Pension Records from FL--all of which have been forwarded to me and which I could forward to the researcher as a starting point. There are no records in our family that prove where and when William TODD was born. I have selected your organization (TGS) because of its proximity to Gadsden Co., FL, the county in which William TODD enlisted in the army of the CSA. I have also obtained from the website of the SCV, the actual statistics of William TODD. Although I am a native Floridian and almost all my mother's maternal and paternal people lived in Gadsden CO., FL, I, a resident of TX, do not anticipate a trip back to FL in the near future. In fact several of the wives of some of our relatives were born in Leon Co., FL. Sincerely, Patricia C. Dreiss, e-mail pdreiss@stic.net
I don't know which list she was on as I sent it to three list ....and to think that Richard wrote this on a (Wallmart color film processing receipt and stuck it in my calendar/address book. I knew that I would find it sooner or later... ) We are glad you found it Richard.....Betty Go to this web page for all updates: <A HREF="http://members.aol.com/HiLuci1/Gadsden/PittmanBoySc.html">http://memb ers.aol.com/HiLuci1/Gadsden/PittmanBoySc.html</A> http://members.aol.com/HiLuci1/Gadsden/PittmanBoySc.html Subj: Pittman Cemetery Date: 11/24/99 1:21:28 PM Eastern Standard Time From: pdreiss@stic.net (Patricia Dreiss) Hi there Folks, Bonanza!!! I knew being on the mailing list would pay off! The John B. PITTMAN and wife, Mary C., buried in the Pittman Cemetery in Gadsden Co., FL, are my relatives. John B PITTMAN, oldest son of John T and Eliza PITTMAN, has been very elusive to this date. Your date of b coincides with the DOB that I have. Mary, according to my records, was Mary Caroline Anderson, prior to her m to John B. They had at least these children: 1. John Avener PITTMAN b 29 Sep 1846 in Gadsden Co., FL 2. James Elbert PITTMAN b Gadsden Co., FL date unknown 3. Mary Ida PITTMAN b and place unknown 4. Jesse E PITTMAN b and place unknown I am desperate to locate the father of John B. PITTMAN, who is John T PITTMAN and, according to the 1850 Census for Gadsden County, FL, who was b in NC. The 1830 and 1840 Territorial Census for FL show a John PITTMAN with sons in the appropriate age bracket for the sons of John T and wife Eliza PITTMAN. These are the children (that I know of) of John T and Eliza PITTMAN: 1. Cynthia Pittman b 16 May 1815 2. John B Pittman b 18 Nov 1818 3. Milbrey(Melbrey) Pittman b 20 Mar 1820 4. William E Pittman B 7 Apr 1822 5. Phillip Pittman b 29 Aug 1825 (My ggrandpa) 6. Elizabeth Pittman b 16 Feb 1827 7. Benjamin Pittman b 10 May 1832 8. Mary Ann Pittman b 24 Dec 1833 The above dates have not been verified and the dates of b of William and Phillip do no agree with the Census of 1850. Place of b of the above children was probably Gadsden Co., but, again, no verification. In our PITTMAN family there are no existing family Bible and no other specific documentation of any b, m, or d records. My search on these PITTMANs has been going on for about 10 years now and I would appreciate any assistance y'all might be able to give. A number of the children of Phillip PITTMAN are buried in the Antioch Cemetery, but no John T PITTMAN and wife and no Phillip PITTMAN and wife. One last note! John B and John T PITTMAN both served in the Indian Wars in FL. Thanks ever so much for putting the info about John B and Mary PITTMAN online. Y'all have made my day with the FIRST real connection to a PITTMAN anywhere!! Pat

Subj: Gadsden County Florida Cemetery Book Date: 11/22/99 11:17:31 PM Eastern Standard Time From: angelab_smith@yahoo.com (Angela Smith) Thank you for your interest in posting my mother's new book in the Florida State Genealogical Society's newsletter. The book is entitled "Seven Eastern Gadsden County, Florida, Cemeteries with Genealogical Information". It includes everyone buried from mid-1800's up through October 1999 in the Concord, Vickers, Barber, Touchstone, Finklea, Hand, and Scott cemeteries in the Concord and Scotland communities of Gadsden County. There is an index in the back for the Concord, Vickers, and Barber cemeteries since they are so large. The other cemeteries are small family cemeteries with only two or three people in each. The genealogical information includes relationships of people buried beside each other and to other family members in the same cemetery and in the other Concord cemeteries. Place of birth and death, date of marriage, number of children, names of children, military service, name on tombstone and complete name as given in family Bible or census records are given where known. Some deeds, wills, and family letters are transcribed, and history of the Concord and Vickers cemeteries is provided. Family names well represented include Vickers, Walsh, Bell, Barber, Gray, Laing, Perkins, Stephens, Strickland, Johnson, and Poppell. The book is 142 pages, 8.5" x 11", spiral bound. It costs $15.00. Add $5.00 shipping. Make check payable to Barbara Boynton, 4005 Danesborough Place, Tallahassee, FL 32303. For questions about whether anyone's relatives are in the book, send e-mail to Barbara Boynton at: mema@nettally.com. Thank you, Angela Boynton Smith

Subj: New book on cemeteries in Gadsden County Date: 11/21/99 7:48:26 PM Eastern Standard Time From: angelab_smith@yahoo.com (Angela Smith) Betty Mae, Since you are sending out new cemetery indexes, you may want to share this information. My mother, Barbara Boynton, just published an index of 6 cemeteries in the Concord area and one cemetery in the Scotland area. It is entitled, "Seven Eastern Gadsden County, Florida, Cemeteries with Genealogical Information." It has the Vickers, Concord, Barber, Touchstone, Hand, Finklea, and Scott cemeteries in it. In the Vickers, Concord, and Barber cemeteries, she has genealogical information about most of the people so you can tell who their parents were, who their siblings were, their military service, where their other relatives are buried, where they were born, etc. My mother grew up in Concord and gathered the information tracing her relatives, which are extensively represented in the Concord and Vickers cemeteries. Her book explains how some unrelated people ended up buried in the family cemetery and it contains some family Bible pages, copies of deeds, family trees, family letters, and some good stories about how the cemeteries were started. She has been able to identify many of the unmarked graves through interviews with the older folks in Concord who knew their parents and grandparents were buried there. The book costs $15.00 with an additional $5.00 if it needs to be mailed, and can be obtained from Barbara Boynton, 4005 Danesborough Place, Tallahassee, Florida 32303. Her phone number is 850-514-8856. Angela Boynton Smith 1806 Sunset Lane, Tallahasee, FL 32303 (850)422-1577
Gadsden Co FL ....for all you cemetery surveyers out there this one is being surveyed.... Dogtown Cemetery (originally known as New Bethel OR Owens Cemetery). Back many years ago, the New Bethel Methodist Church stood across the road. Also, many OWENS family members of years ago are buried there. However, now the location is known as Dogtown Cemetery, the community in which it is located. In fact, we are the grounds keepers for the cemetery. James' family - SMITH - are the only ones who have recently had family buried there. Betty
Pittman Cemetery, in Gadsden County. It is tucked away in the heart of Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation and has been adopted by a number of Wood Badge classes for improvements such as fencing, headboards, and signs. Way to GO Wallwood Boy Scout Troop. I would like a picture of Cemetery for the internet when you finish with the project. Maybe a before and after. Thanks Betty
