    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens, 5th Reg, SC Militia, War of 1812
    2. I have submitted three Form 80's to NARA to search for the Military Service, Bounty Land Warrent Application, and Pension files of which the National Archives might have on Solomon Owens, 5th Reg SC Mililitia, War of 1812. Hopefully some indication will be there as to where this gent enlisted. Ideally his birthplace, place of residence when application for land warrents and pensions were made, age at enlistment, service activity/actions, and such will be specified. Maybe I'll be lucky. Will keep all informed as get records. Also am on the trail of Solomon the elder. Strongly suspect that he was from NC (I have found one referrence to a colonial record for a Solomon Owens in NC) and that he was a veteran of Rev War. Am waiting on a CD for colonial records to get a referrence on the NC record, then I can order that from NARA or NC A&H. Then start a search for Rev War, wills, and land records. I have found four Owens gents who came to SC about the same time, were born within a twelve year span, and could be brothers or cousins. Maybe they came from the same place. David (Marion County), Joshua (Laurens County, Thomas and Solomon (Barnwell). There are other Owens lines in SC which I am searching for lines and earliest ancestor. Merry Christmas to all. Do keep in mind the REAL reason for this all, and disregard this mindless stuff that distracts. Scott

    1. [FLGADSDE] Stephen W. Owens, SC/FL
    2. Dot: I was looking through some old emails I had in my file and ran across one from you in 1996. I could not find the specific one but at the same time you had sent me an email which detailed the movement of Stephen Wesley Owens, son of STephen (d1824) of BArnwell, SC. You seemed quite convinced at the time that Stephen Wesley had indeed moved to Gadsden county, FL. Do you recall this? Has this been disproved or does it remain a possibility? In the email I have saved from at the time, you had been in touch with Annette Blount who was researching Annie Elizabeth Owens, and thought she could be a daughter of Preston, granddaughter of John Owens of Barnwell. Just this past year Annette and I corresponded and established that Annie Elizabeth was the daughter of Solomon and sister of my James G. Look forward to hearing from you. Scott

    2. Brenda Smith
    3. Seth Hardison and his wife Mary nee Blanford Hardison were listed in the 1850 Gadsen census. They were born in Georgia but had been residing in Florida at since since 1845 as Seth was listed on the voter registration. I am looking for connections to the Blanford family for Mary. She and Seth were married in Florida in 1829 in Leon Co. but apparently returned to Georgia for a while as some of the children were born in Georgia. Trying to prove if Mary Blanford born ~1800 was the dau of William or Clarke Blan(D)ford of Georgia.. any connections out there? Brenda Smith Nome, AK

    1. [FLGADSDE] Shelfer - Browning
    2. Is anyone connected to the NATHAN SHELFER or Stephen BROWNING? Does anyone know if there are family papers which might include sales of slaves? In 1870 census Luke BROWNING (age 60) is next door to Charles BROWNING (age about 30). About 1855 in Stephen BROWNING's will there is a slave Luke age about 45. There is also a Simon and a Lewis BROWNING, names which appear in the 1870 census, but much younger than the Will indicated. The marriages of Gadsden County list Charles marrying a Maria(h) SHELFER. Luke, Lewis, Louis and Simon are also listed in the marriages, and Luke and Lewis marry SHELFER women too. In 1902 Eustace B. SHELFER sells land to Simon BROWNING, Charles's son. Charles is buried on the land in 1904, in the family plot.

    1. [FLGADSDE] A note from Betty
    2. I have all the famous people e-mails and please keep sending more. Also I am a little behind because of the Holidays. Please bear with me thru Monday and that will be my Christmas Day. I will work 2nd shift on Christmas and when it falls my turn to work on Christmas I always have my Christmas on my long weekend before the Holiday so I can really enjoy the family. Sunday will be Christmas Eve and Monday will be Christmas Day. This has been my way of enjoying my family for 20 years now. I just received Shady Grove Cem from Wayne Carpenter and the pictures of Two Egg from Don Sellers. I have lots to put on the Famous People page also. Tomorrow I will dig thru files looking for a cemetery survey from Wayne that is missing. Either the mail or I have misplaced it. (Red Oak Calhoun Co., FL) My daughters will help me look tomorrow. I have some packages from some of you on family information and my new years wish is to get it organized and online. When I was in Jefferson Co., FL a few weeks ago they asked how many hours it took to keep up with the Jackson Co.... Web Page. I have no idea as to the hours as I have never keep a log. My children say it is a lot. <G> I received the e-mail address of the man who has the information on the store and the 2nd FL CAV and will get in touch with him. I wish all Happy Holidays and a Bright and Successful New Year. May all the "Brick Walls" come tumbling down. Betty

    1. [FLGADSDE] (no subject)
    2. I am aware quite well of the Solomon in Marion. I have an entire family file in FTW devoted to him and his three wives. He was born in 1786 and died 1846, Marion county. End of story. He did not move out of SC. The SC archives does not have a Solomon Owens in their pay rolls for state troops for W o'1812, BUT the National Archives' index of W o' 1812 Compiled Service Records for SC lists a Solomon Owens of the 5th Regiment, Keith's SC Militia. These may not have been state troops but rather raised under authority of the Feds, like the Florida Militia in which my GGgrandfather (Solomon's son) served in the Second Seminole war. That would be the difference. I am waiting to get the Compiled Service records from NARA, which I acctually requested several weeks ago just hoping it was there. Am not really sure who this Solomon is, I do hope that some indication is made WHERE he enlisted; that would help determine who it is. I suspect that Solomon of Marion would be a little old to serve in the War of 1812 (in his 30's) as a private. Florida does not have a record of a Solomon Owens applying for a pension for service in the War of 1812. It is quite probable, however, that my Solomon would not have qualified for a pension due to his real estate and personal property holdings. If the War of 1812 units are microfilmed like WBTS units, each unit (regiment) is on one or more rolls of microfilm, with officers listed then enlisted men regardless of company listed aphabetically for the entire regiment. One would have to obtain use of the unit's microfilm rolls to search for all Owens. The NARA will only search for one named individual when you request a search for military records with Form 80 (the only one used.). There probably is a microfilmed index of ALL SC servicemen for War of 1812, listed aphabetically which also indicates the unit of each man. That's probably not in your local genealogy library, though. Don't know if NARA would search the index for Owens' and their respective units. Might have to make a special request. I did get a copy of the orginal bounty roll of my GGuncle's WBTS cavalry company (Solomon's grandson)---for six bucks, no less. I bet no orginal records from 1812 can even be touched, now, much less copied. Let's see what turns up on the service record. Will keep you informed as I get stuff myself. Scott

    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens in SC Militia, War of 1812
    2. Just got a note from the SC Dept of Arch and Hist. My request for whether Solomon was on their pay rolls of WO1812 turned up nothing, but from their microfilm of the National Archives' 1812 Service records they found one Solomon Owens, private, 5th Regiment, Keith's SC Militia. Since I have already intitiated a search through NARA for such a record, I suppose I will be getting something from them, though probably not before this decade is out. Am really excited to see what turns up. MAY be our man. I have also requested a search with the Florida Dpt of Arch and HIst as to 1812 Pension applications in the name of Solomon Owens. Haven' t heard from this either. Scott

    1. [FLGADSDE] BROWNING
    2. Can you check the names in the cemeteries for any BROWNING's? I am trying to find an African-Am family that was connected to the SHELFER family .. the wife of Charles BROWNING (possibly owned by Stephen BROWNING) was Maria(h) SHELFER (possibly owned by Nathan SHELFER's family). In 1902 Eustace B. SHELFER sold property to Charles' son Simon BROWNING and Charles was buried in the cem. on the property. He died about 1904. Thanks Betty

    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens SC/FL
    2. I wanted to summarize my supporting facts which lead me to the conclusion that Solomon Owens, son of STephen of BArnwell Dist, SC, was one and the same as Solomon A. Owens of GAdsden county, FL: 1) Both were born in SC 2) Both had wives named Sarah 3) Both had business/family connections to Beaufort Dist, SC 4) Solomon in SC seems to fade from the record about the time Solomon makes his appearance in Fl. What is the support that Stephen Wesley Owens moved from Barnwell to Gadsden, FL? Dot, you emailed to me that this was the case, and if this is so it makes my argument all the more compelling. Still don't know where Joshua fits in. The family (two sources) maintains that he and Solomon were brothers. Is it possible that he was left out of STephen's will purposefully? We still need to establish who the other Solomon was to differentiate the two. I think he is the one in 1830, not in 1820, in Barnwell, SC. His wife is named Elizabeth, and she remarried soon after he died. She must have been younger. Need to know if Solomon in Gadsden Co, FL left a will. I have never seen one referenced. I have not looked for such in Quincey. Keep in touch. I almost have the original of the deed in Barnwell with Solomon sellling 100a with Sarah marking her dower release. I think this is a pivotal document. Scott Owens
