    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens, NC-SC-FL
    2. Have not heard back from NARA on Solomon Owens' War of 1812 service, bounty land warrent application, or pension. It has been over 2 months since I requested these copies. Experience tells me this could be a good sign, because I have found that the requests for which no records can be found are usually returned in about 4-5 weeks, and when records are found and copied, the more copied the longer it takes for it to get back. So maybe I hit paydirt this time. Getting tired of stiking out. Also waiting on Rev War records for Solomon (the elder) and Stephen Owens from (suspected) NC service. Need to write the NC Archives to see if they have land/deed records on Solomon of Craven County. Need to look at Barnwell Distr. tax lists to see who is listed when in early 1800's. Guess I'll email the SC Archives to see about this. Wonder if old Solomon as a young man could have been in the French and Indian War? Will keep you informed as developments occur. Scott Owens

    1. [FLGADSDE] Looking for King & Reeves Info
    2. Looking for info on my g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth J. King, b. ca 1824 in SC; 1st m. Charlie Moore ca 1842; 2nd m. Hugh Lawson Speer ca 1861. I believe she lived in the Lake Jackson area in Leon Co, FL at one time. She & Charlie lived in the Concord area in Gadsden Co., also. She was listed as a school teacher in the 1860 Gadsden Co. Census. Also, looking for info on my g-g-g-grandmother, Barbara (Barbary) Reeves, b. ca 1780; m. William McElvy in 1799; d. 1838 in Decatur Co, GA. She & William were in in Burke Co, GA. in 1803, then in Tattnall Co, GA in 1820, then in Decatur Co, GA in 1830. There are a couple of Reeves buried in the Concord Cemetery in Concord, Gadsden Co, FL. I think they may be related to my Barbara Reeves McElvy. Any info regarding the above will be greatly appreciated. Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Gerlits Palm Bay, FL

    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens SC/FL
    2. Have not gotten copies of the 1858 deed of the sale by Solomon Owens of land in Gadsden County, FL, but am told by parties searching/copying that Sarah was not a party to this transaction, i.e. she didn't sign/mark anything. Rats. What about the tax lists/censuses you mentioned for Barnwell? How frequent were these taken, and how complete is the extant collection of these records? If we can show Solomon Owens after 1819 listed each year until about 1826/1828 then we have a clue, not proof, that the younger Solomon left. Also might there be a Joshua Owens listed? What age would be the beginning age at which one would be included in the tax list? Any more about Stephen W.Owens going to Gadsden County, FL? I think a key piece of evidence is the sworn statement by Lafayette Solomon Owens, youngest son of Solomon of Gadsden, make in 1895 for his sister Annie Elizabeth Owens Blount's application for widow's military pension: That Annie's husband, Charles Blount, Solomon's son-in-law, came to Gadsden County in the 1830's (Charles was born in West Beaufort District, SC in 1814), i.e., when he " was 18-25 years old," and first stayed with Solomon in his house. Since Solomon-Stephen-Solomon Owens all lived near the southern border of Barnwell Distr adjoining Beaufort Distrct, they would have known and had considerable contact with folks in the adjacent district (haveing lived near a county line myself). Also, Charles Blount came from SC "with some of my (Lafayette's) father's (Solomon's) people." This is undoubtably a referrence to members of Solomon's family migrating from SC to Gadsden County, FL in the 1830's. And a Stephen W.Owens appears in the records of Gadsden County after this time, until the late 1840's, including voting in the 1845 election (first statewide election in the State of Florida). Stephen unfortunately does not appear in the 1850 Census. I suspect that the "other" Solomon in Barnwell in the 1840's was a descendent of Thomas Owens. This Solomon's wife was Elizabeth who evidently remarried shortly after Solomon died in the early 1850's. I feel that Thomas and old Solomon were likely brothers, seeing how they came to Barnwell almost simultaneously in 1784. What about researching Craven County, NC records for the Solomon who is there in 1769? Land records would be good, of course, especially if they are accompanied by a dower statement by Solomon's wife. Need to look for Margaret. Have been in touch with a branch of (FL) Solomon's line, through John Miles Owens, who have some difference in arrangement of this branch than what I had been told before. They also feel some connection to an imigrant ancestor but need to see their line and proof. They DO have an old family Bible which lists my GGgrandfather James G. Owens as a son of Solomon, the only DIRECT evidence of this fact I have found/heard of. I am supposed to be getting copies of this Bible and outlines of their family line. Look forward to hearing back. Scott Owens

    1. [FLGADSDE] Cookbook with a Genealogy Theme
    2. Hello List, The following announcement is being posted with permission. I am researching and writing my family history. I have always wanted to write and publish a cookbook, also. So, I thought, "Why not write a cookbook with a genealogy theme?" Boy, am I hooked on genealogy or what? Anyway, this is to announce the fact that I've already started preparing the cookbook. I would like to ask for your assistance and give you the opportunity to contribute your recipes, photographs, stories, ideas, etc. You will be given credit for your contributions. The recipes may be original or family recipes or anything from anywhere or anyone. How about family stories, childhood memories, stories about your best cooking experience or your worst cooking nightmare? Whatever! I want it to be interesting. I would like to make the theme "Family History". Any ideas along those lines would be appreciated. For instance, you may want to contribute your Pedigree Chart along with your recipes. Or maybe you would like to describe how your ancestors did their cooking. For instance, my mother cooked on a wood-burning stove. My grandmothers both cooked in an open fireplace as young women and in later years they cooked on wood-burning stoves. <Details in the book.> How about Southern traditions, cooking habits, foods, etc. Anyone else have any ideas? In addition to the wonderful recipes, the book will contain a special section with cooking information, helpful hints and much more. You may want to contribute to this, also. This book will make a nice keepsake or a great gift for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, weddings, etc. Will those of you who are interested please submit your recipes as soon as possible? You may submit them via E-mail or snail mail. The sooner I get the recipes collected, the sooner I can get them to the publisher. The book will be professionally published and as far as I know at this time will cost approximately $ 9.95 plus shipping & handling. I am not asking for orders now, however, if you wish to reserve a book now as some others have done, feel free to do so. Please do NOT reply to the list. Reply to ME at LIZGERLITS@AOL.COM. Personal note: My full name is Deretha Elizabeth (Liz) Yon Gerlits and I was born and raised in Havana, Gadsden Co, FL. My ancestors settled in north FL and south GA in the early 1800's. I'm also wondering if any of you could direct me to a professional researcher in BAY County, FL. I have a deed from 1887 that I would dearly love to know about. My great-grandfather received a small tract of land in Washington County and it's now Bay County. I haven't a clue why he received this land or what ever happened to it. The little tract of land was purchased from The St. Andrew's Bay Railroad, Land and Mining Company. Can anyone here help me? Amy McCroskie Denver, CO

Then your family will not have to wait 70 years to learn about you." *There's two theories to arguin' with a woman. Neither one works. Ivan Richardson

    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon/Stephen Owens land in Barnwell Dist, SC
    2. I have gotten a modern general highway map of Allendale County, SC, where Barnwell and Beaufort Distr came together in the early 1800's. Some of the water courses bear the same names as those used to describe the land of Solomon and Stephen. It is really hard to get a good idea exactly where the property was, of course, but this map doesn't have sections on it (do they have those in SC?) and can't really estimate acreage. STill waiting on the 1858 Deed from Gadsden county, FL to see if Sarah signed or marked then. Waiting on military records on Solomon in War of 1812, and old Solomon in the Rev War (serving from NC). 1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens---- Barnwell, SC\\\Gadsden Co, FL
    2. What will it take to prove that the Solomon Owens in Barnwell Distr, SC, son of STephen Owens and grandson of Solomon Owens of the same place, was one and the same as my GGGgrandfather Solomon A. Owens of Gadsden County, FL? So far, both had a wife named Sarah (the other Solomon in Barnwell was married to an Elizabeth). Both the couples were about the same age. Both men were moderate planters. The key may lie in the respective Sarahs. In 1823, Solomon sold land which had been part of a purchase by his father Stephen in 1800, and according to Stephen's will this 100 ac had been given to Solomon at his marrage (c1817) Solomon's wife Sarah testified to her waiver of dower rights by making her mark, not signing as did Solomon. In Gadsden County, FL, the 1850 and 1860 Census records whether individuals could read and write; Sarah is not indicated as illiterate in either census. It is possible that Sarah learned to read and write between 1823 and 1850, or that she either lied to conceal this or erroneous information was given about this. In 1858 Solomon of Gadsden sold a tract of land; presumably Sarah would have to waive her dower rights for this with signed testimony. I am waiting on a copy of this deed to see what happened. Another tact I am taking is the possiblity of military service, specifically in the War of 1812 for which Solomon would have been just old enough to serve. Indeed, there is a Solomon Owens listed from SC who served as a private in militia evidently raised under the authority of the Feds. Hopefully the military service will show where he enlisted and maybe a birthplace. What would be better and would give more information would be a Bounty Land Warrent application, which would give military service but birthplace and residence at application. It is quite probable that Solomon may have made application for this after he arrived in FL (assuming my theory is correct). I have requested this document as well. I have also requested Pension application file, which would give good information. However, no Pension applications for the War of 1812 by any Solomon Owens are recorded. It is likely that Solomon would have had too much real estate to qualify for a pension. But we'll see. Wish I could make this all fit together, and get the information I need faster. Will stay in touch. Scott Owens

    2. CLIFF FIVEASH
    3. Dear Cousins, 60 years ago this week, amidst the dark and uncertain waning days of 1939, King George VI broadcast to the British Empire and the Free World these words, the composition of the hitherto-obscure poet Louise Haskins: I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, `Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.' And he replied, `Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.' The King added: `May that Almighty Hand guide and uphold us all.'.......... That His Hand continue to guide and uphold us, and each of us, is the wish and prayer of your cousin and friend, Cliff Fiveash Listowner

    1. [FLGADSDE] Solomon Owens I, Stephen Owens, Solomon Owens II, NC-SC-FL
    2. My latest deed copy from Barnwell Distr, SC, of the 1823 sale of 100ac by Solomon Owens and his wife Sarah to Wm Harvey, part of acreage purchased by Stephen Owens in 1800, establishes that Solomon chose to sell his inheritance shortly after the will of Stephen his father was written. The next year began a series of sales of land by Solomon's mother and brothers of Stephen's estate for the next ten years. A final disposition, in 1833, was transacted by Stephen's youngest son and Stephen's mother, Margaret, who had signed with her mark then as well in old Solomon's (Stephen's father) sales of land thirty years prior. Evidently Stephen's wife Elizabeth died before 1833. My hope is to establish that this Solomon Owens, married to Sarah, in BArnwell Dist, SC, is one and the same as Solomon A. Owens, also married to a Sarah, of Gadsden County, FL, my GGGgranfather. This latter Solomon sold some acreage in Gadsden County in 1858, and his wife Sarah was alive at the time as she appears in the 1860 Census. I have requested a copy of this deed to see if this Sarah signs or marks. If the latter, I believe that this will establish the the SC Solomon is the same as my GGGgrandfather in Fl. I also wish to substantiate this with copies of the 1850 and 1860 Census of Gadsden County, which record whether a person could read and/or write. Sarah died before 1870, when Solomon and their youngest daughter Mary are liveing with Annie Elizabeth Owens Blount, Solomon's eldest daughter, with husband Charles and family. I have found a Solomon Owens listed with NARA as a private in SC Militia in the War of 1812. I have requested his military, bounty land warrent, and pension files from NARA to see if this is my GGGgrandfather, in Barnwell Distr. Probably another month or six weeks to hear from these requests. Another area of research is that of Solomon's grandfather Solomon Owens, who purchased 100 ac in 1784 in Barnwell Distr, SC, apparently the beginning of his land acquisitions in that place. I have found a Solomon Owens in Craven County, NC, in 1769. Need to research deeds in Craven County around this time to see if he transacted land, and if a wife signed/marked a dower in any sales. Would be nice if this turned out to be Margaret, marking with "M" on her dower statement. May have to use/pay a researcher in Raleigh to do this. Also plan to request military and pension/bounty land files for Solomon Owens of NC for the REv War from NARA just to see if he served. Also Stephen, as Solomon's son (and my Solomon's father) would have just been old enough to serve in the late Rev War, in NC. I think they moved to SC after the WAr. Also want to look into the Overstreet connection with the Owens' of BArnwell, SC. Think that possibly Sarah wife of Solomon II was an Overstreet. Don't know how complete the Overstreet line is worked out in Barnwell. Did the Overstreets come from NC, and could they have been old friends of Solomon Owens when they moved to Barnwell, SC. When did they come to SC? Here is what I have so far in the line: 1. SOLOMON1 OWENS I1 was born Abt. 1740 in North Carolina?1, and died December 1818 in Barnwell District, South Carolina. 2. Dot: Just got the copy of the original deed for Solomon and Sarah's sale of 100a to Wm Harvey. This was the same land that Stephen, Solomon's father, had purchased in 1802. Both deeds referr to the same original land grant. It is reasonable to assume that this is the 100a that Solomon got at his marrage. The sale deed also describes Stephen as bordering to the south and the west, so this 100 a had been the corner of Stephen's plantation. Sarah signed her dower with her mark "x". My Solomon of Gadsden County, FL sold a tract of land in 1858, and HIS wife Sarah was alive at the time. I need to get this sale deed to see if THIS Sarah also signs with a mark. Also need to look at the original 1850 and 1860 Gadsden County Census in detail to see if Sarah is listed as unable to read or write (my census notes do not have this info). Merry Christmas, Stay in touch. Scott I got the 1852 Land Patent for Solomon in Gadsden County, but it has no signature of Solomon, as I had been lead to believe. Too bad. IF old Solomon came from NC (as the referrence I found suggests) to Barnwell Distr, SC, c1784, did Sarah's family (whoever they were) come later (post 1800)? Could she have been an Overstreet? Do we know where the Overstreet girls who married William and other Owens were born?
