I have big gaps in my Family Tree Maker Program that I need to have someone help me fill in with the correct information. LIZ

    1. [FLGADSDE] Wells in Gadsden, Jackson, Liberty
    2. Martha Black
    3. I spent a couple of days in Gadsden County last week -- hurriedly walking through Hillcrest Cemetery in Quincey and Providence in Greensboro. I did find some information on my family. I am requesting replies from anyone who may have known my great uncle Francis Marion Wells (CSA participant in the Battle of Natural Bridge -- Woodland, Florida) or his descendants. My uncle preached in churches in Gadsden and possibly nearby counties (perhaps as late as 1920s). I understand his son (Junior) did the same thing. A combined grave at Hillcrest of William Wells and Willie Wells (1949 -- according to a bronze plaque on the site) is also of interest to us. Francis Marion had a brother William (also my great uncle), and old letters seem to indicate William lived near Francis. Would there be records or personal knowledge among area archives or list members that would reveal more about these two persons? I am seeking living descendants. Our ultimate search is the name of F.M. Wells Sr.'s father who lived in Lowndes County Georgia (Valdosta). Some family surnames connected to this family are Stewart, Bowen, Santerfeit, Touchton (variations of spelling) and Rudd. The name Rudd appeared in both of the cemeteries I toured. Also, we are seeking more information on a connection between the names Glover and Wells -- the name Glover was also observed at Hillcrest. Do any of the list members know if records are kept on those in the two cemeteries mentioned? Are there Providence church members on the list? If so, does your congregation keep old records. I understand my great uncle preached there. He also lived in Telogia -- perhaps a church there would have members who would remember the family. Any small amount of data would be appreciated. Thank you. Martha Wells Black

    2. Hello All: Spring is almost here, at least in Florida it feels that way. Many of us are planning gatherings and reunions. Let's make these a success by promoting them both to the lists AND on the web pages. So, I am asking you to submit your FAMILY REUNION information to the list and (if you indicate the affirmative) we'll do our best to get the information on the GenWeb Project web pages (Calhoun, Gadsden, Jackson, and Washington). (Ya hear that Betty . . . we don't need sleep! lol) Be sure to include: Date Time Location Contact person (email - phone number - address, as appropriate) Surnames included Covered dish, etc. (<ahem> can't you tell I'm hungry!) BTW, we are still planning a Jackson County Homecoming on 12 August. Those interested, please contact me at SeaGee69@aol.com. Anyway, looking forward to hearing from you. 1. [FLGADSDE] Volunteer with lots of computer expertise
    2. Volunteer with lots of computer experience and time needed. I would like all the Washington Co., FL Historical Cemeteries edited and put in one big file and indexed. Then broken down to, A to C, D to G, H to L, etc. These files were typed by many people so it would take a lot of time to edit the files and get them ready for processing in an index. You would need to add a column at the side for the name of the cemetery. Please only someone with great patience and time and computer expertise ask for this project. Betty

    2. We have a serious problem with someone trying to destroy our list and our good will. Please do not open any files that are sent to you till this person is caught. Without checking with the person who sent the file first. I will not send a file till I have E-mailed you and received your permission to send a file to you. I think everyone should do that also. From now on before sending a file e-mail me first and tell me what is in the file and then in a second e-mail send the file. This should stop whatever is going on. I don't know why someone would want to do this and I will not pass judgment till we know the "whole story." I am very sorry for this trouble. Betty

    1. [FLGADSDE] Re: Owens in Indian Wars
    2. Jean When I actually read the text, I found that the numbers were volume and page numbers in this series (10 volumes) of Florida Seminole war soldiers. I have since contacted some folks in Tallahassee who can visit the Florida Archives and find out what units these gents were enlisted. I can order their service records and request a search for bounty land warrent applications and pensions/widow's pensions. My Solomon in Gadsden County had a second son born in SC after my James G. Owens, indicated in the 1830 Census of Gadsden County. Maybe I can figure out his name. He is not named in the 1850 Census of Gadsden County, but then he may have moved to Leon or Jackson counties by then. Still got to look. After working to about 6 every day, I come home and take over keeping up with our 20 month-old daughter who has by then worn her mother out entirely. This lasts to about 10 when she gets her bath and goes to bed. THEN I begin feeding the 3 sheep, 2 goats, shetland pony, and Jersey steer, along with the geese and ducks. Then I feed the two dogs, three cats, and three birds (2 cockateils and a lovebird, so-called), So by 11:30 at the earliest, assuming I have had no emergency calls, I can start online genealogy work/correspondance. My weekends are similarly consumed, so even though the Mobile Public Library Genealogy branch stays open til 6 PM, I never have time to do any research. I believe that I am the first to really work out and establish my Owens line this far back. When I first got started, I corresponded with a 94-year old cousin who had worked on this for 20 years, and never got back past James G. My break came when I got an email from a descendent of Annie Elizabeth Owens Blount, asking if I knew the James G.Owens mentioned in Annie's Widow's pension application. I had previously suspected that James had a sister. Seems that James and Charles Blount, whom Annie married after the Seminole war, served in the same unit. Also a tie to Solomon was suggested but not proven by the fact that two of Solomon's sons (both b in FL) gave sworn statements about Charles Blount, and both mentioned the service of James. I later got ALL of James' service records (he served in 1836 for a year, and later in 1841 for the same period). Along with his bounty land warrent application and some related correspondance in the file. THEN a descendent of Solomon's third son John Miles Owens emailed me that his family had an old family Bible which listed James G. Owens as a son of Solomon. They are sending me copies of this now. So now to make the connection to SC. Both James and Solomon are identified in the Census as born in SC, 1819 and 1794, respectively. In 1820 there is a Solomon Owens in Barnwell Dist, SC, who is <26, wife is <26, with a daughter <5. Having found numerous errors in the Census, I believe that this is actually my GGgrandfather, listed as a girl. He is similarly listed in the 1860 Agricultural Census Returns (Sch II) of Walton County, FL as "Jane G. Owens." So much for listening closely when you write down the names of your census district. So I have been hitting Barnwell Distr hard and heavy, and Dot, Janet, and Candy are quite tired of my emails by now, I am sure. They have been immencely helpful, and I have near proof that my Solomon in Gadsden County, Fl is one and the same as that Solomon in Barnwell Distr, SC, the son of Stephen and grandson of Solomon Owens I. That would make him a GGnephew of your Etheldred. But I try to ferret out every detail, as my notes in my GEDCOM will attest. Currently I am trying to get more details on my grandfather, Everett C. Owens I of Greene County, AL. I have by email made requests to the AL Archives about agricultural records, and have learned that Auburn University (my alma matre) has extensive archives of the Agricultural Extension Service from 1909. I am going there in March for a Cont Ed siminar (I am a veterinarian) and hope to have time to look at these materials. I might even find a photograph (there is a photographic archive for the AES in the collection there) of my grandfather and possibly his family, including my father as a boy. So that's my current status of research. I am waiting on Rev War service records, bounty land warrent applications, and pension records on Solomon and son Stephen assuming they were in NC during the war. I found a record of a Solomon Owens in Craven County, NC in 1769, and am requesting the NC Archives about any land records on him there. If he sold land and his wife waived her dowery rights by marking 'M' for Margaret, then I'd say that that's my man. I am back to NC. Need to know about your John. You seem to have quite a bit on him, and need to look it over. Guess he didn't leave a will, most inconveniently. Stay in touch, as you might wish. Scott

    2. CandyOTTE To: Anrkee Hi Scott Thanks for keeping me posted on the S.C. Owens family. Here are a couple of thoughts that might add a bit to the puzzle. My research was on the line of Etheldred D. Owens because I was seeking any additional clues to his second wife Ann who was the mother of my ggggrandfather Thomas Brooke by her first husband Thomas Brooke of Maryland who died near Beech Island (Barnwell or Old Winton Co.) S.C. >From the following outline of Etheldred's descendants and other info in my database (much of which duplicates your tree in your recent e-mail) leads me to strongly suspect that Etheldred and Solomon Owens I were most likely brothers and if so perhaps that will narrow down your North Carolina search for Solomon to the Edgecomb County area. I am still hunting for my source on that location but I think it was in another world family tree or may have been from another corresponance. I will let you know if I find it. I have some of Etheldred's estate papers that outline his children. Let me know your thoughts and feel free to share this with the other Owens folks to see if any of these ring bells with them. I have had the info on Solomon and Etheldred for a long time but it just struck me today that they are most likely brothers. Descendants of Etheldred D. Owens 1 Etheldred D. 1. [FLGADSDE] Re: Barnwell, SC Owens Line
    2. I have considered that Solomon I and Etheridge were brothers. One body of research I found on Etheridge suggested his father was a John Owens in NC. It looks like that Thomas Owens and Solomon I were likely brothers as well. There was a David Owens and Joshua Owens about the same age range who moved to Marion and Laurens County areas, respectively, about the same time. David had a son named Solomon b1786, d1846 in Marion County. I wonder about their connection with our guys. Desperately waiting impatiently for the military records on Solomon A. Owens, Stephen, and Solomon I to come back from the NARA. Thought surely they would come today, but no show. Guess they are having to copy a lot of stuff on these guys. There is another line of Owens in another area of SC but I can't think of where right now. Scott Owens
