    1. Re: [FLGADSDE] Wesley S. Owens, Gadsden County, FL
    2. Have you tried looking in Decatur County? I have a James R. Owens there, much later, m. to Eliza Jane Brunson. She died early and is buried in the Brunson Family Cemetery but he remarried and may have moved back to FL. As I understand the family stories, he was from Gadsden. I would also like to hear from any Brunson/Bronson descendants in the area. I am from Isaac Brunson, b. 1808 in SC. Barbara

    2. Hello Brian, I was born and raised in Havana and many of my ancestors were some of the early settlers in the Gadsden Co, FL area. If you have any info regarding the history of the Gadsden County area and the little towns around there (Havana, Scotland, etc.), I would appreciate if you would share it with me. I am especially interested in Scotland and the origin of the name. My McElvy/McElvey family originated from Scotland (the country). Thanks! 1. [FLGADSDE] Wesley S. Owens, Gadsden County, FL
    2. Does anyone know who Wesley Owens was? He served in the Florida Militia in the Second Seminole War with my GGgrandfather James G. Owens. He was also with Stephen Owens in the same unit. In the first muster-in roll, Wesley is listed as a guard back at camp, which I take to mean perhaps he was younger. Wesley doed not appear on the 1845 voter list, nor is he a head of household in 1850 in Gadsden County. Maybe he moved. Can some body help me? Scott Owens

    1. [FLGADSDE] Blounts in Gadsden County, FL
    2. The following came from Minnie Shuler, Owens/Gadsden County researcher: Scott I talked with Dr. Andrew Ramsey who has done extensive research on many of the older families in Calhoun and Liberty County that are of Creek Indian Ancestery. According to Dr. (Chief) Ramsey John Blount and his brothers (and he did not at the moment remember their names, only that there were several of them - which probably includes Charles Blount) were the children of Gov. Blount (later to become govenor) of Tenn., who came to North Florida and married an indian woman. The Lower Creek Band of Indians (who are not acknowledged nationally as indians nor by their fellow tribesmen) "went white" as he called it, meaning that in the Seminole War they faught for the United States against the Seminoles (who fought for the French and British). It is because of this that the Apalachicola band of Creeks were able to obtain the Reservation lands in Calhoun county. This group, as well as many of the Southern Cherokee (who were considered part of the Creek Nation) intermarried with the white settlers and did not go to Oklahoma in the "trail of tears" when the indians were removed from their lands. some of their white husbands drew for some of the indian lands in the land lotteries that followed. There is more research to do on this topic. I do not have the facts yet. In the papers of Dr. Sutton, he describes the early white settlers such as the Woodberry and others in the Dekatur/Gadsden area (which was called Duval Territory) as weathy Craven County plantation owners who moved to this area. That is not always the case. Barnwell District was one of the stopping areas where many of the early settlers lived because it was on one of the major migration routes to the west (esp Texas and Florida). Dr. Ramsey has produced 5 books on the Boggs - Parrott - Ramsey families and incidentatly mentions the Blounts (founders of Blountstown). There were some 55 independent villages and tribes that were a part of the Creek Nation. It will probably be Saturday or next Wed. before I can get to the Ramsey Books to look them over. I have copied most of the papers in the Probate Dockets of Martha Lambert (minor - matter of guardian ship in 1890), Lovensky Lambert's estate settlement in 1870, and Benjamine J. Lambert's estate settlement (widow Lucy) of 1842-1856. Martha Sarah Owens married John Gamble Lambert (grandson of Lovensky Lambert). They all lived in the old Dogtown Community. I have been trying to read them, the writing is very poor in places. Are you interested in them? There are about 150 pages of the records in all. I have not seen very much Owens listed, but there are many other of the early settlers of this area named. The Blountstown Creek Indian Community Conference is scheduled for March 18th at the Civic Center at 5:00 p.m. It is open to the public if you are interested. There may be some people there who could answer some questions about this there. Dr. Ramsey and his lovely wife Wisa will be there. The Conference is sponsored by the Creek-Euchee Band of Indians. They are a different group from the Lower Band of Creek indians. They are affiliated with the Oklahoma indians and are pushing for Bingo in this area. The Lower Band of Creeks (The Floirda Tribe of Eastern Creek Indians) do not want it. I think there is somewhat of a dispute between them, that they are trying to work out. Sakim, a noted lecturer on Florida's Native American Heritage and Folklore (linguist and museum director), has said that about 90% of all purely southern lineages have indian blood or Portugese blood. Sakim is a descendent of Chief John Blount. Thanks for you patience, Minnie

    1. [FLGADSDE] Re: blount
    2. Interesting the possible Indian connection with the Blounts. Charles Blount was described in his wife's pension application (Annie Elizabeth Owens Blount, daughter of Solomon and Sarah Owens, b 1825 SC) as about five ft. ten inches, black eyes, black hair and dark complexion. Sounds like Native American to me. But Charles was born in Beaufort District, SC, 1814, not Florida. I suspect that the James, John, and Redding were brothers of Charles. Got to find them in the Census. According to my theory, the Owens (old Solomon) came to Barnwell Dist, SC, in 1784, and by 1827-1835 had moved to Gadsden County, FL. Solomon's younger sons stayed in Gadsden County, James G. moved west to Walton Co, FL, where he died in 1902. His eldest and youngest sons moved to GReene County, AL 1870-75. We are still there. Will need to digest the balance of your email. Will be in touch. Scott

    1. [FLGADSDE] Re: Barnwell, SC/Gadsden, FL Owens Research Progress
    2. The Bible record of John Washington Owens does not mention Joshua. It only describes James G. Owens as the son of Solomon and Sarah Owens. I have not researched the census for Joshua as I should have. Need to look more completely. If it is Joshua's mother, assuming he is Solomon's brother and that they were both sons of Stephen and Elizabeth Owens of Barnwell Distr, SC, in the 1840 Census, it would fit with happenings in Barnwell Distr, SC. Stephen's estate was in dispute until 1833, when the youngest son Stephen Wesley Owens and Margaret (marked with "M" just as young Stephen's grandmother did) Owens finalized the sale of the estate lands to settle debts. Elizabeth, the widow, is last listed in the estate proceedings in 1832. Will have to look at the Census more closely when the next blue moon appears coinciding with my free time to do so. Thanks for your input. Let's keep on plugging Scott

    1. [FLGADSDE] Barnwell, SC/Gadsden, FL Owens Research Progress
    2. I recently got the transcription of the Florida Militia Muster rolls for the Seminole War for those companies in which any Owens served. Those who served with my GGgrandfather James G. Owens included: Joshua Owens, Stephen Owens, Wesley S. Owens, Wiley Owens, and John Owens. Interesting among the privates were not only Charles Blount, but John Blount, Reding Blount, and James Blount. For those not familiar, Charles Blount married James G. Owens's sister Annie Elizabeth Owens, the last child of Solomon and Sarah Owens born in SC. Must get the Compiled Service Records from NARA for these gents, as well as bounty land warrent applications and any pensions. I believe that Wesley S. Owens was the second son of Solomon and Sarah Owens, born c1822-1824 SC. I think that the Joshua and Stephen were Solomon's younger brothers. I think that Wiley may be a mis-transcription of Wesley. Do not know who John is. Further archival evidence has come in. I received from the Deed Recorder of Craven County, NC, a deed from 1775 describing the transferr of 200 acres from one Solomon Owens to Jacob Blount for settlement of various specified debts owed to said Blount. (Interesting Blount connection here as well) Solomon had obtained this tract by patent in 1770. There is no mention of a wife with dowery rights (NUTS!!!). Solomon was listed in the 1769 Census of Craven County, NC. Don't know if this could be old Solomon who came to Barnwell Dist, SC, when he purchased 100 acres by patent in 1784, the father of Stephen Owens and grandfather of (I think) my Solomon Owens who came to Gadsden County, FL. Wonder if there are other deeds in colonial NC that mention Solomon Owens? Can anybody find out? Am working on the premise that Etherdred and Solomon may have been brothers. Etheldred was born in Edgecomb County, NC. Haven't looked there yet. Scott

    1. Re: [FLGADSDE] William Barber, 1792 NC
    2. Hi James and Listers, Solomon Barber, son of William Barber and Mary Jane Ashley, is my great great grandfather. I have the marriages records from Decatur County, GA which show that Nancy Lynn was his first wife and Susan Lynn was his second wife. They were the daughters of Lucy Kinsey and David Lynn of Gadsden County. I am still looking for more information on Solomon and Nancy's daughters, Susan and Georgian Barber. I think they may have married and remained in what is now Houston County, AL. James also has George Washington Barber b. 1828 as the husband of Sophia Whiddon Poppell. She was married to a George Washington Barber but not this one b. in 1828 and son of William and Mary Jane Ashley. Both Sophia Whiddon (called Whiddon) and George Washington Barber b. 1853 are buried in the Barber Cemetery in Concord. They are buried next to each other. I have not been able to determine whose son this George Washington Barber was. I really would like to know who this George is and would also like to know what happened to George Washington, b. 1828 and son of William and Mary Jane Ashley. James also has Gerald Barber b. 1822 in Georgia and m. to Elizabeth. I believe that should be Jarrot and his wife was Elizabeth Robinson, Three of Nicholas and Betsy Slade Robinson's children m. three Barbers. Elizabeth and Amarinthin H. Robinson were sisters. Charles N. Robinson m a grandaughter of Wm. Barber. James Allen has a great website on this group. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/l/l/James-D-Allen/ Thanks for any leads! 1. [FLGADSDE] Re: Thoms Owen, Granville County, planter
    2. Anna: No, I don't have the dates on Carolina Elizabeth. I got a birthdate est. of c 1825 from Dot or Janet. The big thing I need in Barnwell Dist/County is proof that my Solomon Owens in Gadsden County, FL is the same as the eldest son of Stephen Owens and grandson of old Solomon Owens in Barnwell Dist, SC. Both were about the same age and both were married to women named Sarah. Solomon and Sarah in Barnwell, SC sell the 100 acres old Stephen gave them at marrage a few months after Stephen wrote his will (and didn't give Solomon anything else). Just as well as after Stephen died, his widow and other sons (younger than Solomon) had to sell what they had been willed just to pay debts old Stephen had with his brothers and others. My Solomon in Gadsden County can be placed there as early as July 14, 1829, when John Miles Owens was born in Gadsden County. Another Solomon shows up in Barnwell Dist, SC in the 1830 Census and in deeds in the 1840's; he apparently died in c1852. I believe that this Solomon was younger and in a different branch of the Barnwell Owens (maybe yours) than Solomon and Stephen. Keep in touch. Scott
