Subj: FLGenWeb_Gadsden Date: 04/01/2000 6:54:16 PM Eastern Standard Time From: jpowelljr@gru.net (Jim Powell Jr) Hi Betty... as the Ancient Records Coordinator for Alachua County, I am attempting to place all of our old records online. One of the documents that we already have online is the Will of Caroline Virdier. The will was originally from Gadsden County. The URL for the TOC for this file is <A HREF="http://clkres17.co.alachua.fl.us/clerk/Ancient/WillImages/100_19.html">h ttp://clkres17.co.alachua.fl.us/clerk/Ancient/WillImages/100_19.html</A> http://clkres17.co.alachua.fl.us/clerk/Ancient/WillImages/100_19.html The numbers are our files names, i.e. Apartment Drawer 100, file 19, document 1, part a. The images are 600 pixel wide jpgs with a much larger image linked to the image. If it happens to help someone, please let our clerk know. Hello list. I received a copy of a probate file of my GGG grandfather, John Colson. In the file it says " Received of William Forbes, Executor of John Colson, dec'd, six dollars for the tuition of John Colson in the Quincy Male Academy for the third quarter ending 31st of July 1835. I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding this school? Also, it says " hauling 6940 feet lumber from Colson's Mill". Has anyone ever heard of Colson's Mill? This probate file is 52 pages long & is hard to read. There are numerous people from the area mentioned in the file. Thank you!! Doug Colson
Dear Gadsden group, I think my earlier note was ambiguous. I am looking for Wells in Gadsden. Are there any on this list? If you reside in the Gadsden area, do you know of Wells who have lived there several generations? Martha Wells Black
Just looking for this surname in Gadsden. Perhaps such information would help in my search. Martha Wells Black

Another subject.....Is anyone familiar with the community of Blue Springs Precint 11 in what seems to be the vincinty of Hardaway or Flat Creek area of Gadsden Co., FL? If so, I heard there was reference to a cemetery there, possibly called Blue Springs Cemetery, some yrs. ago, but I don't know how accurate that info is. I know that in the early census records of the 1900's Blue Springs is a community listed as in Precint 11, but I have no knowledge of ever hearing of it or seeng a road sign for it in my lifetime. Thanks, Elaine --WebTV-Mail-29344-70--
Does anyone know what the white cemeteries in and around Gretna, Gadsden Co Fl are? I was curious if the one just inside the city limits on Solomon Dairy Rd. is one? Also does Glen Julia church have a cemetery? I have a relative that was buried in Gretna in 1920, but no cemetery was given. Appreciate any help. Thanks, Elaine

Gadsden County Marriage Book? ??? How much? From whom? I have a CSA question. When a soldier is identified (in the Military Index) as being in a certain Florida regiment, does it indicate that he functioned in close association with all other soldiers in that regiment? I assume First Florida continued on for reasons following the war years, but my query is specific to the c. 1864-65. Example: My Grgrandfather Edwin Ruthvin Wells fought with the First Florida Regiment (under Captain Sims) in the Battle of Natural Bridge. My gruncle Francis Marion Wells did likewise. I know from their correspondence that they were together in training, drills, day of battle, etc. Now, I am finding other individuals who are identified as members of the First Florida Regiment (some infantry, some cavalry). I look forward to help on this matter. Sincerely, Martha Wells Black
Has anyone received their copy of the Gadsden Co. Marriage Book (reprint)? Anxiously awaiting mine. Ida
Minnie: Here is the Joshua line that I have to date. Not too certain about his descendency from Stephen Owens, but it's all we have right now, still need proof. Son Silas married Paulhenia Hinson, b 1851. I'd suspect that she was a daughter of Augustus Washington Hinson, and the birth year may be an estimate from a census. It is possible that she was a twin of either Mary Catherine or Martha Caroline, or they could have squeezed her in between them. I have record (my GGgrandparents James G. and Lucinda Owens) where a couple had three children in sucessive years (John Harrison, June 17, 1847; Julia Caroline Owens, April 1848; Hugh Lafayette Owens, March 6, 1849). I suspect that this information I have on the family comes from the 1870 Census, so I bet that something happened and these children were orphaned between 1870 and 1880. I have record of no other children. This couple married when Paulhania was but 14, according to the records, and Silas was just back from the WBTS, Co A, 4th Florida Infantry, CSA (same company as Lafayette Solomon Owens, youngest son of Solomon and Sarah). Looks like old Augustus Washington Hinson was involved in the WBTS as well, judging from the lapse in child-bearing. JOSHUA A.3 OWENS (STEPHEN2, SOLOMON1) was born 1807 in South Carolina3, and died Abt. 1875 in Gadsden County, Florida. He married SUSAN OWENS Abt. 1836 in Gadsden County, Florida. She was born 1816 in Georgia, and died in Gadsden County, Florida. Children of JOSHUA OWENS and SUSAN OWENS are: 15. i. SILAS S.4 OWENS, b. 1839, Gadsden County, Florida. 16. ii. WILLIAM D. OWENS, b. 1842, Gadsden County, Florida. iii. REBECCA OWENS, b. 1845, Gadsden County, Florida. iv. ANDREW M. OWENS, b. November 1, 1849, Gadsden County, Florida; d. September 13, 1921, Gadsden County, Florida; m. IDA; b. 1860. v. MARY OWENS, b. 1852, Gadsden County, Florida. Still trying to see if Joshua really is a brother of Solomon and son of Stephen as a family tradition in descendents of both maintains. Hope military, bounty land, and pension records can help. He served breifly with my GGgrandfather, James G. Owens, in 1839 in a Florida militia unit. John and Jimmy, do you have more info on theses folks? Scott
I am trying to trace my roots to their earliest discoverable origin. I think I have worked back clearly to SC in 1784, when Solomon Owens (b c1740) purchased by patent 100 acres of land in Orangeburg District, later Barnwell District, SC. These patents in Orangeburg/Barnwell were frequently by settlers from VA or NC. I found a Solomon Owens in Craven County, NC in 1769, 1770, and 1775. Maybe he's the one. Maybe not. I have the will of Stephen Owens, son of old Solomon, both original copy and a transcript. Also have a copy of an original deed in which Stephen's son Solomon and wife Sarah in 1823 sell 100 acres which Solomon and Sarah clearly received from Stephen at their wedding, according to Stephen's will and the deed description as well as the earlier deed when Stephen originally bought the 340 acre tract. This document is my fullest proof, though not conclusive, that my GGGgrandfather Solomon A. Owens was one and the same as Solomon the son of Stephen. Both men were married to women named Sarah, both born in SC about 1795. I have a theory in which there was a big dispersal of Stephen's estate as well as his family after his death in 1824. The above mentioned sale seems to coincide either with the writing of Stephen's will in 1823 or his death. There were two or three migrations of the family from Barnwell Dist, SC to Gadsden county, Fl between 1826 and 1830. I have gotten names from Seminole War muster rolls which suggest that two of Solomon's younger brothers (one not mentioned in Stephen's will, a good reason to leave SC) and two of his sons (one my GGgrandfather) for whom I have requested military, bounty land warrent applications, pension applications. I have had good success with these documents gaining information leading to family relations during this time. A cousin who had been researching the family from the early 1970's had provided me with copies of some wills from Barnwell county, SC, which is where she had guessed we came from but never even got a connection there. These included the wills of STephen's brother William (who had sued Stephen's widow for his estate) and father Solomon ("old Solomon," whom I think came from NC, at least I found a Solomon Owens in the 1769 Census of Craven Couonty, NC, and got a 1775 deed from that place wherein Solomon conveys 100 acres to a creditor. The deed describes the property as having been obtained by Solomon in 1770 by patent. However, none of the online Owens researchers in this or surrounding counties of NC know anything about Solomon. Here is my line as I feel pretty confident about: Descendants of Solomon Owens I Generation No. 1 1. Recently got records of a Stephen Owens being promoted from Ensign (lowest Rev War Army officer grade, a very young officer) to 2nd Lt. in Nov 1777 in the 8th NC regiment. My Stephen, if they were in NC then, would be 17 or 18 in 1777. MIGHT be the one. Would like your feedback on any possible connections with my line. Subj: March 2000 Site of the Month Award Date: 03/15/2000 6:09:49 PM Eastern Standard Time From: UnkHiram To: BettyMaeS@aol.com Adventures in Genealogy: Site of the Month Award for March 2000 The site I wanna bring to yall's attention this month is the Jackson County, Florida GenWeb Project http://members.aol.com/BettyMaeS/index.html. This site is not only head and shoulders above most county sites but it should make some of the Professionals out their take a pay cut. Not only is in wide ranging in the Genealogical information that it shares but it is also arranged in an intelligent and easily used format. Straight forward no fancy bells and whistles, or to put it another way Elegant in its simplicity and scope. Now lets get down to the basic questions we have to ask about any page we use: 1) What kind of Page is it? It's a County Genealogical Pages. It brings together scads of information and links helpful to anyone with Jackson County Roots. 2) Is the Page Current? Yes, I scanned several times in the last few weeks and noticed something new everytime. I am not sure if that is because they are adding material on a daily basis or if because there is such a wealth of material you cannot take it all in on one setting. 3) Does the Page offer a wide selection? Yes, They Offer links to cemeteries, churches, information on vital records, court houses and family histories among other subjects. It is obvious that a great deal of time and effort has gone into this page and the research it shares. 4) Does it have an easily understood format? Yes, a straight forward approach. Items are listed one after another on the page. 5) How fast does it load? The page does tend to load a little on the slow side but I suspect this is because there is so much material on this single page. 6) What sets this site apart from all the others? There are several solid reasons to use this page. The research presented is current and comprehensive. It is obvious that more than one very good researcher has devoted time to the information shared about this county. 7) Is the site pure Genealogy? Yes, although it does list some historical sites they are genealogical in nature. Now for the Downside: There is no real downside to this site other than the fact that it loads a little on the slow side. Overall I would strongly recommend this page and present it with the March 2000 Site of the Month award. Congratulations Jackson County, Florida. Recently got military service records for Solomon Owens, 5th Regiment, SC Militia, War of 1812. This gentleman was enlisted from June 1812 to December 1812, had a substitute stand in for him for certain periods after August 15, 1812, and lived 65 miles from Yorktown, SC, the organizing location for this regiment. Based on this, I must conclude that this describes the service of Solomon Owens of Marion County, SC, b Dec 1786, d 1846 Marion Co, SC. Alas, my GGGgrandfather Solomon did not serve in the War of 1812 (NUTS!!!!). Struck out again. On the other hand, further evidence strengthens the Barnwell Dist, SC, connection of my line. It seems that in three companies in which my GGgrandfather James G. Owens served in the Seminole wars in Florida, there also was a Wesley S. Owens. In the 1840 enlistment company, the first time Wesley enlisted, he was listed as a guard at a base camp or camp of instruction, suggesting that he might have been younger that most of the others taken on active campaigning. I think that this might well be the second son of Solmon A. and Sarah Owens, b 1822-1824, the younger brother of my James G. who is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Census of Gadsden county, Fl for Solomon Owens (he would have been 17-18 years old in 1840). If so, it would seem that Solomon named a son after his youngest brother, Stephen Wesley Owens, if my Solomon is the son of STephen Owens of Barnwell Dist, SC, which seems more and more the case. Still trying to fit in Joshua, or figure out where he came from. Is there a Wesley S. Owens in the surrounding counties from Gadsden County, FL in the 1850 Census? He is not listed in Gadsden County then. Leon, Jackson, Liberty, others? Have been firing off a lot of email to Owens researchers in NC to find the origins of old Solomon. Have found a Solomon Owens in Craven Co, NC in 1769-1775. Waiting to hear back. Several Stephens found in NC counties as well. Keep in touch. Keep on looking. Scott
