Hello, I am new to this list. I have just found that a branch of my family originally from Brooklyn NY ended up in the Pensacola area, probably because of the father being in the Army from 1860-1885ish. I now live in Mobile AL, but am not familiar with research in this area. I am hoping someone can give me some advice, as I hope to go to Pensacola and do some research. Yesterday at the Mobile Genealogy Library I used the census films and traced the Gathleny's and Diffin (whom one of the daughers married into) back from 1920 to 1900 for Gathleny and to 1880 for Diffin. I"ve searched online via the Escambia County page and found information on obits and on 3 of the Gathleny boys who registered during WW1. I have one FL death cert for one of the Gathleny boys, which states he was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. I"ve called them and they say 4 are buried there, but that is not all the family. My specific questions I hope someone can help me with are these....... The Gathleny family lived in Warrington on Canal (1900) and Dallas (1920) streets. Catherine (McGlinn) Gathelney lived there as a widow with children Forest, Florence, Katie (married Earl DIFFIN) Ligouri, Edward Grover and John. What Roman Catholic church would be the closest to there for the family to have had baptisms and marriages in? Daughters Annie, Florence and Liguori may have married into other families in the area. I"ve been getting FL death certs for $5 via Jacksonville.... but I read on the website where you can get them in Escambia for $8.... is this true? Do you get them immediately in person? I've sent for Nicholas Gathleny's army pension records, but I think he died between 1885 and 1900 (either in Fort Jackson LA or in the Pensacola area). I have been unable to find any reference to him or Catherine I have found several obits in the online indexes. It's been suggested I contact a Harold Bonifay for them. Is this accurate? Are there other indexes of obits, as there are others I would be interested in that are not listed. What is the best place to go in Pensacola to research for the day.... I'd like access to the 1885 State Census, Florida death and marriage indexes, cemetery records. I think I've read where the Historical Society has most of this? Do they have a fee to research (again, I think I saw that on a webpage). The Gathleny line appears to have "died out", as it's an uncommon name anyway (I suspect it's a mangled form of another name that Nicholas got when he joined the Army before 1860). I do believe tho that there are some Diffins who might still be in the area since they had some children. Any advice on researching these families will be welcomed.
