Hello, I'm new to the list and was wondering if anyone is familiar with the old street names of Pensacola. Specifically, I am trying to find the current location of 5th Avenue and "Stoddart's" Avenue which appear in an 1890s Pensacola business directory. Have tried all the online modern mapping services with no success. So, if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Mary
On Jan. 16, Mary Largen inquired about these two streets. After some research, I answered her but in case anyone is interested-- Stoddarts Avenue was the same as 12th Avenue 5th Street was Cervantes ----------------- Only read on if you are really interested. Alexander Stoddart owned a dairy farm and lived at Lakeview and 12th Ave. (1885) In one case, even Lakeview was referred to as Stoddarts. Maybe both streets terminated there at one time, or that was the most important place they went. He was one of the wealthiest men around and lived in a large home with formal gardens. At one time, some of the ease-west streets had ascending number names going from south to north. Gadsden was 4th Street. Cervantes was 5th Street. Lakeview was 16th Street. Fifth St. going east seemed to end about 13th Ave. As the city moved east these numbered street names were carried across Bayou Texar. Those streets stayed as numbers many years after the town side of the Bayou changed to the names we use now. But, in fairly recent years, the numbered streets across the Bayou were changed to reflect the town side names. So. 7th Street in East Pensacola Heights is Gonzalez, etc. I have not figured out when, nor why, these numbered streets changed back and forth. They are not even consistent within the same years. 1890-91 - There's 5th St. near Stoddarts Ave. (5th=Cervantes. Stoddarts Ave. = 12th.) But Alex. Stoddart's home is 12th Ave, corner of 16th. (16th=Lakeview) 1893 - I found an address at 4th Street near Stoddarts Ave, which would be Gadsden and 12th Ave. And 5th St. near Stoddarts, and Alex. Stoddart of NY City was 12th Ave., corner of 16th St. 1896 - Gadsden St. is used instead of 4th St., but there's an address of 8th St. near 12th Ave. 1900 - Alex. Stoddart's res. Stoddart Ave. corner of 16th. 1910 - Cervantes, formerly 5th St. Lakeview, now Sierra Stoddarts: See North 12th Ave. 1916 - Stoddards runs E & W, 19 Streets N. of Garden (So, here Lakeview is called Stoddarts St. More than you ever wanted to know....
