HELP SAVE THE FLORIDA STATE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES The Florida State Genealogical Society has uploaded a brand new website with the society's response to the Florida Governor Jeb Bush's plan to eliminate the State Library. It includes up-to-date information and can be found at: www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/statelib.html Time is very important to the people of Florida and across the U.S. Every library in Florida will be affected by this, as will any library outside of Florida that requests an interlibrary loan from Florida. We are desperately trying to save our State Library and Archives and we must have your help. E-mail, call, or fax every legislator. Go to the meetings in Tallahassee. Pass this message on to everyone immediately. Pam Cooper President, Florida State Genealogical Society
The FINAL, final deadline has been set for March. 31, 2003. There will be no more extensions after that. We are almost done. These books will be in public libraries and will be a great genealogical source for generations to come. You still have almost 6 weeks to get your Escambia Co. FL family stories in. Please do it as soon as possible. This is an exciting project, and you won't want to be left out when you see it. Presale price of books will be good till that date, also. $50.00 plus $3.75 FL tax (if you live in FL). Add another $5.00 if you want the book mailed to your home. Otherwise, you can pick in up. Place not decided yet. The cost after that will probably be over $60. You do not have to buy a book to submit a story. Stories and checks should be mailed to Heritage Book Committee, P.O. Box 30643, Pensacola, FL 32503-1463. If you need brochures or more info about word count and format, please write <cgdean@bellsouth.net> or call me at 850-432-7072. Cynthia Dean, Chairman

On Jan. 16, Mary Largen inquired about these two streets. After some research, I answered her but in case anyone is interested-- Stoddarts Avenue was the same as 12th Avenue 5th Street was Cervantes ----------------- Only read on if you are really interested. Alexander Stoddart owned a dairy farm and lived at Lakeview and 12th Ave. (1885) In one case, even Lakeview was referred to as Stoddarts. Maybe both streets terminated there at one time, or that was the most important place they went. He was one of the wealthiest men around and lived in a large home with formal gardens. At one time, some of the ease-west streets had ascending number names going from south to north. Gadsden was 4th Street. Cervantes was 5th Street. Lakeview was 16th Street. Fifth St. going east seemed to end about 13th Ave. As the city moved east these numbered street names were carried across Bayou Texar. Those streets stayed as numbers many years after the town side of the Bayou changed to the names we use now. But, in fairly recent years, the numbered streets across the Bayou were changed to reflect the town side names. So. 7th Street in East Pensacola Heights is Gonzalez, etc. I have not figured out when, nor why, these numbered streets changed back and forth. They are not even consistent within the same years. 1890-91 - There's 5th St. near Stoddarts Ave. (5th=Cervantes. Stoddarts Ave. = 12th.) But Alex. Stoddart's home is 12th Ave, corner of 16th. (16th=Lakeview) 1893 - I found an address at 4th Street near Stoddarts Ave, which would be Gadsden and 12th Ave. And 5th St. near Stoddarts, and Alex. Stoddart of NY City was 12th Ave., corner of 16th St. 1896 - Gadsden St. is used instead of 4th St., but there's an address of 8th St. near 12th Ave. 1900 - Alex. Stoddart's res. Stoddart Ave. corner of 16th. 1910 - Cervantes, formerly 5th St. Lakeview, now Sierra Stoddarts: See North 12th Ave. 1916 - Stoddards runs E & W, 19 Streets N. of Garden (So, here Lakeview is called Stoddarts St. More than you ever wanted to know.... When the amendments were placed on the ballot, Gov JEB Bush made a "slip" and got quoted that he had some "devious plans" to deal with the amendments if they got passed. And it's not all money either ... The Governor is out to gut state government and put as much as burden as possible on the local governments ... hoping that there are private sources to fund the services the citizens of Florida are losing day by day. The staff at the Archives have been hinting at terrible changes that were forthcoming but this do beat all that I could have imagined !! What plans does he have for the R. A. Gray Building (which has been designed for and developed for the care of those materials)? Is Dept of Mgt Services personnel going to move in and try to do the job these wonderful state library and archives staff have been doing? There's no way DMS (the state personnel system, fleet, and facilities management arm of the state) can gear up to become efficient and effective in this specialized area of preservation and service. The Governor's "devious plans" are indeed nefarious as well as opposed to the intentions and purposes of state government ... to serve the people of this state. My stomach not only churns to think of the effect of such a move, but turns every time I read his name. And he likes to claim he's the Literacy and mentoring governor ! Where are the books coming from if you start tearing out the libraries? By the way, the new FSU president (who has only been in the position for about a month?) says he and the Governor (and his staff of course) have "already" discussed this and Wettherell was ready to accept the responsibility, but only if the materials STAYED at the R. A. Gray building because of the space, staff and access issues !! Hello ??? You can't get to the FSU Strozier library now. And Dept of Env Protection? What's that about? They have the land records, but why would they be interested in census, county government, and pension and military service records? Ms. Sheila Lilia Martin with a little help from Mr. Puddy

Hello, I'm new to the list and was wondering if anyone is familiar with the old street names of Pensacola. Specifically, I am trying to find the current location of 5th Avenue and "Stoddart's" Avenue which appear in an 1890s Pensacola business directory. Have tried all the online modern mapping services with no success. So, if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Mary

Warren, There is, currently, a cemetery named Pensacola Memorial Gardens, located on Pine Forest Road, west of Pensacola proper. It is a rather large, commercial cemetery. The address is 7433 Pine Forest Rd, Pensacola, FL 32526, and the phone is 944-0355 Pensacola Memorial Gardens, and Funeral Home, Inc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- I dont know that age of it, but my grandfather is buried there, and he died in 1958. I have written a couple of cemetery survey books for this county, and have spent about 15 years roaming them. I know of know others here that would be called specifically, Pensacola Memorial "Park." HOpe this helps Evan Strohl Cantonment ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren Lambing" <wlambing@adelphia.net> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 27, 2002 5:45 AM Subject: [FLESCAMB] Pensacola Memorial Park > Hello Everyone > I am trying to confirm if there is, or was a cemetery, named "Pensacola > Memorial Park" in your county? > I am trying to find or at least confirm information on a family member who > died in Virginia, but on her death record it states she was buried in the > following cemetery Pensacola Memorial Park.
