Evan....I was one of the folks discussing the McNairs. My great-great grandmother was Melvina McNair Godwin, and I think that Franklin Lovell (Fisher Pou's listing has a different middle name...I think Lovard maybe) was his sister? I'll check my notes and get back to the list....hit so many brick walls I just had to stop for awhile. If anyone has a current email address for Bob Waldrop please drop me a note. I had sent a response to an old query on the Escambia Co website in reference to Villar / Dominguez and it kicked back as a bad email. Thank you, Betty Mitchell Busch
Can any one tell me if they have put Coon Hill Cemetery on the internet yet? I sure would like to print out a copy of it for my records. Thanks, Bob Campbell Birmingham, AL
A quick search of Google.com with the terms "civilian conservation corps history" turned up many sites with info on the CCC. One of these is at <A HREF="http://www.cccalumni.org/history1.html"> http://www.cccalumni.org/history1.html</A>
Does anyone remember a millinery shop there? Might have been owned/run by Estella Nordstrom? Looking for info also on two boarders, John & Bertie Rowe. Estella was 39 and a widow on the 1920 Escambia census. She had a dau, Ruth (15) that for some reason did not attend school during 1919. The boarders were listed as: John (either 49 or 29) and Bertie as (27). Estella was shown as being born in NY.
I too would like this information. I had an uncle, Theo Rose, who worked for the CCC. The one letter my mother had was from Atlanta GA. ----- Original Message ----- From: "estrohl" <estrohl@prodigy.net> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 20, 2003 9:13 AM Subject: [FLESCAMB] History of the CCC Hi Lee Scott, I just found the History of the CCC, which was attached to an email of yours---my wife's father was in the CCC and I have his Discharge. I printed the 9 pages, the went to one of the links, and began to print it, when POOF, my 'puter went dead." Any reference to your email with the addresses were GONE!!! I wonder if you could reprint the two URLs that you sent in your letter earlier, so I could access them again. I don't know how I missed them until now---or did you just send that email? By the way, did I also read that you broke a leg? If so, please take care of yourself---and don't take the healing for granted! Friends, I am seeking an obituary for Howard (L?) Lloyd. According to the SSDI, Howard died in Pensacola during June 1970. Can someone suggest the best way to do this? For example, are there any local obituary tabulations where his might be shown? Thanks in advance for any help, Regards to all, Bruce Lloyd, Dryden, NY
Hello. I am George Clinton Howell Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama. My great-grandfather, Ira Clinton Howell, moved from Dallas or Perry County, Alabama to Escambia County, Florida with his new bride around 1896. He married Robbie Liddell in Dallas County, AL in 1896, and our family story is that they immediately went to Pensacola. We don't know why he went to Pensacola. I believe that Ira and his brothers, Frank Napoleon Howell and George Tilden Howell, all show up in the 1900 Escambia County Census, but I don't know where. Some time around 1926, Ira C. and Robbie moved back to Alabama, to the Pike Road community in eastern Montgomery County. They died there, and most of their descendants still live there, or near to there. I am looking for any information about Ira Clinton Howell and his family in Pensacola during the time they were there. We have family stories that he was a farmer, he worked in a harness or buggy shop, and he may have been a jockey (where?). I am looking to confirm those stories, and find out what else Ira may have done in the Pensacola area during that time. He had at least 7 children, all girls, except my grandfather, George Lewis Howell, born in 1900 in Pensacola. George Lewis married Emmie Irene Kendrick around 1921, in Pensacola, and their family moved to Pike Road, Alabama in the 1930's. If anyone comes across any information on Ira Clinton Howell or his family, please pass it along here, or e-mail me at GeorgeInAL@aol.com. Thank you all.
Hello all, Well I am back with hat in hand needing another wonderful person to do a look up. From the super help I received with my family before we have learned a good deal and now have it posted on our families web pages the urls are at the bottom of this email Matilda Jane (Rollo) Browder died bef 1927 but still living in 1910. Spouse: Lawrence Sanders Browder I have census showing this family until 1910 and just found that Lawrence Browder and his son Cameron moved to Mobil, AL where both died. I have Lawrence's death cert. and information on Cameron. I have not located them in the 1920 census so cannot tell if Matilda was still alive. If I could have her death date I could send for her death certificate. Also if you think your family came from SC we are the coordinators for Berkeley Co., SC. We have added what we call "mini counties" and are in the slow process of transcribing old wills for several counties Kershaw, Williamsburg, Darlington, etc. We also photograph entire cemetery headstones some in several counties also. Please be sure to stop by if your hunting for anyone from that area we add to this regularly so stop by often and check the "What's New" page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scberkel/ Berkeley, SC county web page and "mini counties" Thanks so very much for all your help. The first printing of my book sold out quickly; a second printing is now available. Those interested should contact me directly at the address listed below. The following paraphrases the original announcement: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: Descendants of Francis McCall of South Carolina From: Clint McCall Date: 20 December 2002 Re: Publication Availability Notice Title: “Francis McCall and Some Who Follow… A Descendant Compilation” Background I had computerized L. C. (Mac) McCall’s book: “Robert and Mary Lanier McCall - South Georgia Pioneers and Some of Their Descendants”, and Mac had amassed additional research since the publication of his second edition. We had agreed to collaborate on a new book combining his efforts with my research and the computer ability I brought to the venture. With Mac’s sudden passing, his daughter, Mary Ann McCall, very generously made Mac’s research available to me and more than 1,800 additional McCall and allied family members were made part of this new compilation due to Mac’s efforts. Content Of special interest to descendants of Francis are source document copies that show how the Francis McCall of Mecklenburg, NC was misidentified as our ancestor some seventy years ago. Our Francis lived in South Carolina. Also worthy of note is how Ettie Tidwell McCall identified the children of Charles McCall and how our ancestry is based, not upon source documents, but on a Family Tree drawn by Rev. George Robert McCall in the 1800’s. A significant discovery impacting the family history is that the State of South Carolina has no record of Charles McCall serving as a Revolutionary Soldier and the early Effingham County land grants to Charles were not “bounty grants” at all; they were “headright” grants. Our early family facts have been misreported all these many years... This spiral-bound compilation is produced by Family Tree Maker software on acid-free paper and contains 565 pages. The report is indexed by name and contains McCall records from numerous sources. Also included are a bibliography and several reference material appendices along with many sketches of our pioneering forefathers. The compilation contains a report of known burial locations with an indicator of which tombstones have been photographed. Cost This is a not-for-profit venture. The book fee of $45 per copy is to help defray the expenses of accumulating and disseminating this information. Postage and handling are included in the fee. Those interested in obtaining a copy(s) may send a check to the address listed below. Please include your postal address. Mail : P.O. I too am looking for a brick wall that involved a fellow with the name of John Franklin ?. I hate to pass up any chance to put my info out, so here is what I have. John Franklin Rose or John Franklin Rowe. This fellow married an Ella Wynn/Winn Nov 1906 in Perry, Taylor County, FL. In tracking any spelling of Rose or Rowe I have found a John Rowe and wife, Bertie, in 1920 Escambia census boarding with Estella Nordstrom (39) who owns/operates a millinery shop there. She has a 14 yr old dau, Ruth, that, for some reason, did not attend school during 1919 school year. Estella was born in Sweden, her dau. b. in FL and is listed as a widow. John is 27 and Bertie is 24. This caught my eye because Bertie was Ella's middle name. My mother, Rosa Lee/Rosalie, was somehow associated with the Winn/Wynn family. Does this connect with you or anyone out there? Surnames searching: Poppell - Henderson - Kirkland - Gaskin(s) - Moore - Mooring - Rose/Rowe - Mosley
Dear Board, I remember a long and winding discussion concerning the MCNAIRs about a year ago. It seems we have several folks on this board who know some of their history. I recently discovered a friend who is beginning to start her husband's line, and it includes one "Franklin Lovell McNAIR"---Jr. or Sr?? >From what she said, there is a very interesting story here. She said that his life probably bridges the century mark, into the 1900's. Who knows him----them? Thanks, Evan R. STROHL
