    3. Two things come to mind right away:: 1- The current Escambia Hi School didnt open until ca 1959, and there wasnt another back far as 1945---we had only Tate, Tech, PHS, Catholic, and BTW. 2- Could it also be in Escambia Co, Alabama, right next door? I'll ask around. Surely that info shouldnt be hard to find. Evan STROHL SGVICK@aol.com wrote: Could someone please help me identify the high school that my father graduated from? The class size seems too small to be Escambia High School in Pensacola. Could there have been another high school by that name in Escambia County, Florida? 3. The school you're looking for is in Atmore, Escambia County, Alabama. I remember Mr. Hodnette who was later replaced by a Mr. Black. I also remember the name of Vickery. One Vickery was the local 4-H Club rep. His sons (or so I think) was named Dug and Lou. Lou was known for his football skills. Or course this was in the late 1950's. ----- Original Message ----- From: <FLESCAMB-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <FLESCAMB-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2003 7:13 AM Subject: FLESCAMB-D Digest V03 #71

I believe this school is less than 20 miles from Flomaton. Escambia County High School 1215 South Presley Street Atmore, Al 36502 (251) 368-9181 Hope this helps...good luck to you. 2. Hello, By some stretch of the imagination does anyone have any information about the above mentioned accident? Maybe from a history book of the county or newspaper archives? It happened Nov. 1895. My great uncle was involved in the accident & died later that night at a hospital where E. F. Cornell was superintendent. He was buried there as it was impossible to get him back to his home. He was George ZWEIFEL, age 21 & from Pomeroy, Meigs, Ohio. I would appreciate any information at all concerning this accident, and where he was buried. TIA Emily Young Lancaster, Ohio

    2. Jerry Merritt
    3. Hi Evan, Thanks for the encouragement. The main problem we have run into is the removal/destruction of headstones since you completed your survey. From your survey we know the names of those who are in the cemetery but can no long identify which graves are theirs. In your notes from your earlier survey is there any indication of who was buried in particular graves - either by description of the grave or by order of being listed? Such a list would allow us to re-match names to graves on the map we are producing. Once that is done, future genealogists will be able to re-located the lost graves from the map regardless of whether a headstone remains. 1. [FLESCAMB] 1600s Ancestors Data Base Update
    2. First Families
    3. Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. My recent posting updates to the Data Base has taken it to over 26,500 Ancestors who have descendants living today. I have also added several National Societies who have proven many of these Ancestors. Also at this time a few new respected Reference works that contain thousands of sources including some of the early colonists who have Royal Blood lines. All the entries are coded to indicate to which reference work or which National Society has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. When you enter the 1600s Ancestor Data Base be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page" Here you will find the codes and references listed and how to use them. This is must reading to understand the Data Base. We are constantly updating the Data Base with additional Ancestors added as time permits. You will find the 1600s Ancestor Data Base at: http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ Everyone has FREE access to all our web site and the reports contained there. 3. I had tried sending the following to an LL Scott at worldnet.com and it kicked back as a bad address; anyone have a new address; can answer my question below; or forward to him; I'd appreciate any help you might be able to offer. This is a long shot, but I had saved an email from back in Mar 2001 where you responded to the Escambia County gen web site re history of Pensacola during the Civil War. You seemed very knowledgeable and well read on the history during that time period, so much that I kept the email in my files about Pensacola being evacuated by the residents; so my question: Can you direct me to any history or information about custodians of Ft. Pickens after the Civil War; actually during the mid to late 1880's; I just was told a story about my great grandfather, that he was a custodian during the time of Geronimo's stay at the fort and I would very much like to verify this family lore (truth of fiction)? Any ideas of where to start? His name was John Bernard S. Mitchell, he came to Pensacola from Bath Maine in 1850 as a ship's carpenter, he married into the Villar family (Josephine Dominguez Villar). He died in 1887 age 62. I think Geronimo was at the fort around 1885-1887. I would very much appreciate any direction you might offer. Regards, Betty Mitchell Busch

    1. [FLESCAMB] Third Muscogee Cemetery Restoration Effort Completed
    2. Jerry Merritt
    3. The third time was a charm. Thanks to Bruce and Connie Rova who picked up the heavy equipment needed to clear the waist-high brush and their non-stop effort to complete the whole cemetery before the equipment was due back, we now have the entire Muscogee Cemetery once again cleared to ground level. Through the entire morning Bruce pushed the heavy machinery back and forth across the uneven terrain, avoiding damage to hidden gravesites as he stumbled across them. Several stones were unearthed and set upright again as we discovered them. You can review the pictures of some of today's effort at http://home.mchsi.com/~jerrym151/Continued/Restoration/20311222.htm Maurice Johnson and Connie helped Bruce clear the cut brush away so that he could keep cutting without stopping. You had to see it to appreciate it. I can't say enough for this. It was a make or break part of the restoration effort. It's now done. On the leisurely side, Elsie, Helen, Ron and Jerry continued the survey effort and managed to complete the entire SE quadrant. We recorded and mapped 80 graves here that were still visible. Other areas that had scattered stones half-covered by sediment were merely marked as suspected graves. Since one quarter of the cemetery is now plotted, it appears there will be in the neighborhood of 300 or more graves in the cemetery. When we started this effort, I thought there were probably about one to two hundred at most. With the entire cemetery now cleared, we are ready to field two survey teams if we can find the volunteers. Two teams should be able to complete the remainder in three more efforts. It will be important to get this done before the new growth starts in the spring. After that, we'll begin to try to repair some of the damage inflicted on the cemetery over the years. At this point, we need people interested in coordinating with the forestry service to get a controlled burn early next year. There is a lot of piled up brush after today's cutting. Anyone with connections to the local government and law enforcement are needed really badly, too. If we can't get the cemetery declared off limits after dark and patrols to enforce the curfew, our follow-on restoration efforts to try to repair the damage already done will be for nothing. We will probably have the fourth restoration effort on the second Saturday of January 2004. I'll get an e-mail out several weeks ahead for planning purposes. This is a break in the every-two-week schedule we have been following but December is a busy month for the volunteers plus they deserve a well-earned rest. Jerry Merritt

    3. Just a reminder that the next cleanup and survey effort will be this Saturday the 22nd of Nov at 9:00. Bruce Rova will bring a brush hog to help in clearing the remainder of the cemetery. We will continue with the surveying of the south side of the cemetery. We will need at least five volunteers in order to make any headway in the cleaning and surveying. Bruce will need relief on the brush hog as well. Hope to see you all there. Jerry Merritt

    2. Jerry Merritt
    3. We met again this morning at 9:30 and began clearing more brush and surveying graves in cleared areas. Bruce Rova and Jerry Flannigan carried out a massive clearing of the high brush. The rest of us managed to survey a 50 by 100 foot section - about one eighth of the cemetery. This first survey will be a draft from which to work as we begin uncovering old graves buried under a century's sediment. Pictures and a more detailed work description are posted on the Old Muscogee Web Site at http://home.mchsi.com/~jerrym151/. Go to the Restoration Efforts page and navigate to the current work date on restoration efforts. I have also posted additional photos of the Muscogee neighborhoods. All of the photos are from the Merritt files and I really hesitate to turn this into a Merritt page but these are the only early photos I've gotten so far. You can view them on the Pictures page. The next restoration Effort will be in two Saturdays on 22 Nov 2003 at 9:00 am. We really need more help so you'll be welcome if you come. Jerry Merritt
