I can tell you that the Isis was located on the corner of Garden and Palafox St. The Rex was located only a few doors north of the Isis on the same side of the street. I watched many movies at both the Rex and the Isis. First run movies were played at the Saenger, then to the Rex and finally to the Isis. The movies got cheaper each time it was moved. Well, as far as the theater question goes, my 1959 city directory says that the Rex was at 18 West Palafox, which is obviously a typo, since Palafox runs north and south. I think it should be 18 North Palafox. The Florida shows up as 186 N. Palafox. The Isis isn't there at all, but I think it was something like two doors away from the Rex. There is an Isis Building at Garden and Palafox on the northeast corner - probably named for the theater. SO the short answer is that there probably were two of them -the Rex and the Isis - right across from the San Carlos Dorothy

Does your mother remember Fr. Fullerton ? Patrick, that was the whole passage about St. Michael's. Did you want all of her memories of her early days in Pensacola. Let me know and I'll send it off list to anyone interested. I just called to ask if she remembered Fr. Fullerton. Her comments"' Of course I remember him, he gave me my First Communion. All the children loved him. He was just what you think of for a parish priest in fact, everyone loved him. He was good friends with my grandma and grandpa (Joseph and Theresa Rocheblave Commyns). Sometimes, he had to go into the "red light district" of Pensacola to see one of the women there who needed a priest. He did not think it would look good for a priest to go there alone, so would call my grandpa to go with him. He was there when I made my confirmation at age 10 (1923) and even though the bishop did the ceremony, I remember Fr. Fullerton being there." Her only discription that she could remember from a child's veiwpoint was that he was not a large man but she mentioned quite a few times how much he was loved by everyone. I hope this helps. Take care Marilyn
Hi Evan, Good to hear from you too. I suspected I would. Good idea about checking the city directories. I should have thought of that - DUH. That should remove all doubt. First, I am pretty sure all 4 theaters were there at the same time. The consensus that is building, is that the FLORIDA was, as you say, between Gregory and Wright streets. And the SAENGER was, of course, were it is now. The ISIS was directly across from the San Carlos, and the REX was a few doors north. Of course the city directory may prove us all wrong. Thanks for offering to go to the library and ck, but don't make a special trip. It's not that urgent. Congratulations on your retirement. I'm still earning a living, but beginning to think about slowing down. Hope to see you soon. Hey, John---good to hear from you! Yes, the Isis/Rex were among my favorites in the late 50's--- the reason I remember is the fact that we paid 39c for a triple feature, usually horror movies, PLUS one of the action series "shorts" that prefaced the regular runs. The ISIS was just one or two addresses north of Garden, on Palafox. And I was trying to remember, did the ISIS replace the Rex, or did the REX replace the ISIS?? I DON'T think they were BOTH there TOGETHER!!! The Saenger is, of course, still there. And the Florida was about mid-block, I think, between Gregory and Wright Streets, on the east side of Palafox---near the old P.O. building and the Brass Lantern, if my brain is still intact!! I was an ol' Navy Point teenager, man---going downtown was a big trip of the day for us Warrington nerds!!! ;=) However, since my brain could ALWAYS be getting frazzled, I always defer to the Pensacola City Directories---we were just looking for the exact address of the old Walgreens that other day, and I had to hike down to the library on Gregory St to get the exact address, ya know!! Are you able to do that, or do you need me to go down there for you? Or do you want me to meet you down there----I'm retired now---I should have LOADS of time on my hands, but I don't for some reason. ;=) Let me know, sir! Nice to hear from you again. I'm living out in Gonzalez now--in the phone book. It's 968-4041 if you need. P.S. Don't even go there, Sheila, I know you've got SOMETHING to say!! Does anyone remember the precise location of the theaters in Pensacola on Palafox street during the 50's and 60's? I remember the FLORIDA, REX, ISIS, and SAENGER. Which one was directly across the street from the San Carlos hotel. Was it the Rex or the Isis? Or is my memory so bad it was neither? Care to jump in here, Evan? John Jernigan
John, My husband is a veteran of Saturday mornings at the Isis watching Flash Gordon. He says the Isis was on Palafox and Garden right across from the San Carlos Hotel. The Rex, he believes, was 1/2 block north on the same side of the street as the Isis. Marilyn, Yes Rev Robert Fullerton was born in N. Ireland in 1853 and died in 1926 and is buried in St Michael's Cemetery. Is it possible you to copy the passage you describe and send it to me. I would suggest writing to St. Michael Catholic Church 19 N. Palafox Pensacola, FL 32501 850-438-4985 and ask for a copy of the 100th Anniversary Booklet. There is a picture in there of the Rev. Fullerton and a little bit about him. He was the first pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in 1892 before going to St. Michael in 1904.
