    3. There is a collection of Alabama maps at http://alabamamaps.ua.edu/historicalmaps/alabama/1856-1870.html However, I don't think any of them will show Pine Barrens. According to a Civil War Pension application for my ggrandmother, my gggrandfather was killed between Pollard and Pine Barren Creek in 1864. Another witness said he was wounded at Pine Barren near Pollard and died at "The Fifteen Mile House" near Oakfield. I would be interested in knowing if there is a map showing more detail about Pine Barren or Pine Barren Creek. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ginny Deagan" <gdeagan@bellsouth.net> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 21, 2004 12:19 PM Subject: [FLESCAMB] Re: Escanbia County map > Hi, > > Everyone has been so helpful on this list so I thought that maybe some of > you might know the answer to this question that I received. 3. Do you remember when you could drive out Gulf Beach Hwy, and still see the water and go scalloping? It is so shocking when you see pictures on TV of Perdido Key, talk about being in the booneys. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Pcarpenter419@aol.com> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 20, 2004 7:28 PM Subject: Re: [FLESCAMB] Pensacola memories > > Marilyn, I enjoyed your letter on Pensacola memories very much. 2. Marilyn, I enjoyed your letter on Pensacola memories very much. It brought back so many memories of all the same things and places you talked about, plus a few memories of my own. Those were the good old days for sure. I am from the Pensacola area, I lived in Beach Haven but we had a Warrington Post Office address. Twice a month we would go in to town and pay bills and do some shopping, then go eat at Woolworths or the restaurant in the Navy Point DepartmentStore and also there was a buffet place of which I cannot remember the name, that was in town. I went to St. Johns Catholic and to Catholic High the same time you did. Did you by chance go the St. Johns? I went to school with a Marilyn at St. Johns, in fact I have some pictures of some of my classmates. You and I are apparently around the same age. I know you mentioned St. Joseph's Church, I am not sure if they had a school or not. My family used to go crabbing in Pensacola Bay and we would fish off the old Pensacola Bay Bridge. I miss all the good fresh seafood from there. Hopefully in a year we will move back to the area. My husband is retired and I am retired from a school district of thirty years, but I am still working part time. Guess I have to due something instead of sitting around doing nothing. It bores me to no end. It is our plans to go back there. I would like to hear from you and talk about all the memories if you would like. As Bob Hope would say, " Thanks for the memories". Pat

    1. More memories
    2. So how many people went to a Prom or Homecoming Dance at the Pensacola Beach Building/Pavilion and then took a romantic walk through the sand to stroll on the Pier??? Where do the kids have dances now? Proms were lots different then-- no limo's, no expensive dinner before hand, no staying out all night afterwards -- just a basic dance with a live band and full, frilly dresses. The scariest part was all the young drivers trying to make it safely across the old Pensacola Beach Bridge. Take care all Marilyn

    3. Ginny, [or whomever is now doing the Cemetery Project for the WFGS] I got a call today from a lady who insists on making some corrections on "her" people, buried up in the Lathram Meth Church, Barr Pk. Her husband brought home a printout of the Lath Meth Ch Cem, that he got from rootsweb.com---and she discovered some errors in this printout---from the 2000 update survey, I believe. I've looked my own copy of the original "Gravestone Registry" and mine are correct. Additionally, she has some additions. They are planning a big reunion next year, and have a project of their own, and would like to pass on the corrections and additions to her cemetery and plots. The question is---who can call this lady and have a dialog?? I think this printout of hers simply came from our WFGS WebSite on the rootsweb.com . She says she's not complaining, but she'd like to get the dates correct for the people when they have their Reunion. I told her you were a little under the weather lately, and I'd find someone to call her. Thanks, Evan Strohl ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim & Helen Stanford" <hkotm@

    2. I share the Tampa and Pensacola memories, also. I always loved the Saenger (my cousin and I bought those giant lollypops there), but my love for the Tampa Theatre stays with me even now (we bought giant dill pickles there!). Stars on the ceiling. Plushy seats. Next door to Walgreens, where you could go before the movie with your mom and have a chicken salad sandwich with chips. Faye

    3. GNeolog You and I must be about the same age :-) I was raised in Tampa, and the Tampa Theater was the same style as the Saenger Theater (like being in a garden at night.) And we had a live organist. That's where I saw Gone w/ the Wind. I loved to watch my grandmother clean the chicken, such interesting innards. I squished the yellow ball in the margarine, counted ration stamps. I like to eat a Bill's grill on S. Palafox, great bread pudding.

    1. Pensacola memories
    2. I remember going to three individual movie theaters. In fact, one of my worst "groundings" took place from an incident at the Sangaer. My parents dropped me off with a friend to see "LOVE ME TENDER". I know, it was NOT a classic but I was only 15/16 years old. Anyway, we went to the 7 o'clock show and liked it so much we stayed for the 9 o'clock one. That was well before the time of cell phones so my parents waited outside the movie a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time. Needless to say, they were none too happy. They never would have found us in a theater full of screaming teenage girls. I also remember going to the Isis every Saturday morning for a dime to see Hopalong Cassidy movies. My older sister remembers seeing The Green Lantern. Always had a cartoon before the feature and a NEWS short. I was younger at that time. Sometimes we would go to the soda fountain at Woolworth on Saturday. We lived on Barcelona St. so would walk past the USO on Spring St. ( I can still see the wall of morning glories in my mind) and Delchamps on Garden St. BG's Grocery was on the corner of Government and Barcelona across the street from St. Josephs Church. My siblings and I were always looking for an excuse to go there for our penny candy purchases. They had big washtubs outside with "gophers" which were actually snapping turtles. My great grandmother made gopher gumbo -- I have no idea how she killed the critters, cleaned them and cooked them but the gumbo was delicious. Will have to ask my mom to see if she remembers. My sister reminded me of how amazed we were with the pneumatic tubes at Penny's where they sent papers to the second floor. We had unpenned chickens in our yard (1940s) and I DO remember how my greatgrandma killed them and was she ever proficient in her slinging style. We got the joy of plucking them. YUK. Margarine was white colored and had a little container of yellow coloring to be stirred into white. To the 1958 graduate of PHS, I was class of 58 Catholic High and my husband was class of 59. Did you cruise around the Stardust Drive In ( I think it was Stardust) to see who else was cruising, Did you go to B& B Restaurant on Palafox for dinner or to Felton's for a night of bowling and Lord help you if you ever went to the end of Palafox where Trader Jons was located. Bartel;s was another date place for dinner when anyone was craving fried chicken. Pensacola Dairy bar was the place to head for ANY ice cream concontion you could ever want. Our family did not eat out much. Had a specific time for dinner every night and knew when to come in from playing. Had the run of the neighborhood. Road bikes, skated, played hopscotch, jacks, pick up sticks, read books. Played dodgeball, kickball, red rover, mother may I. Well, Enough is enough. Take care all Marilyn

Sometimes, he had to go into the "red light district" of Pensacola to see one of the women there who needed a priest. 3. My mother Kathleen Maher of Pensacola b 1898, told me her sister Inez Maher Bonifay played the piano for one of the theaters in Pensacola this was about 1910. Inez would watch the film and as mother said fake it. She would fit the music to the events on the screen. When sound track came Inez lost her job. I think she never forgave the film industry for that. Inez liked being,"The girl who played the piano for the best movies." Helen

    3. I have a picture that shows the Isis on the NE corner of Palafox at Garden. Another picture shows three businesses between the corner building and the Rex: Gilberg's, Empire Laundry and Ed White. At one time, before 1958, the Gulf Power was there about where Gilbergs was. The Florida Theater was in the block between Chase & Gregory, between the old Post Office and Hannah's Pharmacy. The address Dorothy gave of 186 No. Palafox would confirm that. Cynthia
