    3. Subject: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] 1816 Year of no summer Resent-Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 13:05:34 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2000 15:05:48 -0600 From: Charles & Nancy Royall <[email protected]> To: [email protected] I am going to pass on a tidbit of Info 1816: The year without a summer As a result of the eruption of Mt. Tambour Volcano in Java 1815, 12,000 island residents lost their lives. The Volcano is also to blame for an unusual weather pattern the following year in North America, resulting in mass migrations of people trying to avoid the ensuing climatic changes. The summer of 1816 was unusually cold, with killing frosts and even snowfall destroying crops throughout the United States. June and July were the coldest months, 19 states had snowfall in June! There were no fall harvests; animals and people starved; wild animals ravaged the frontier. Not understanding the meteorological causes, people blamed the wrath of God for their hardships. Some, destitute and despondent, committed suicide. By 1817 the climate had returned to normal. However, many had moved to warmer parts of the country and numerous farmers left for the cities to go into industrial work. If you have no explanation for why your ancestor may have migrated or you can not determine exactly when it happened just sometime around 1815-1820 consider that this event may have been the cause. from the Jefferson Co. Has anyone seen them on any records. The only mention I have ever seen of them is in REGINA MANDRELL'S book 1988 on the MORENO family. **IS THERE A COPY ANYWHERE OF THE FLORIDA COLONY 1783 CENSUS? 1. [FLESCAMB] GATHLENY, DIFFIN - 1900 +
    2. Maura
    3. Hello, I am new to this list. I have just found that a branch of my family originally from Brooklyn NY ended up in the Pensacola area, probably because of the father being in the Army from 1860-1885ish. I now live in Mobile AL, but am not familiar with research in this area. I am hoping someone can give me some advice, as I hope to go to Pensacola and do some research. Yesterday at the Mobile Genealogy Library I used the census films and traced the Gathleny's and Diffin (whom one of the daughers married into) back from 1920 to 1900 for Gathleny and to 1880 for Diffin. I"ve searched online via the Escambia County page and found information on obits and on 3 of the Gathleny boys who registered during WW1. I have one FL death cert for one of the Gathleny boys, which states he was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery. I"ve called them and they say 4 are buried there, but that is not all the family. My specific questions I hope someone can help me with are these....... The Gathleny family lived in Warrington on Canal (1900) and Dallas (1920) streets. Catherine (McGlinn) Gathelney lived there as a widow with children Forest, Florence, Katie (married Earl DIFFIN) Ligouri, Edward Grover and John. What Roman Catholic church would be the closest to there for the family to have had baptisms and marriages in? Daughters Annie, Florence and Liguori may have married into other families in the area. I"ve been getting FL death certs for $5 via Jacksonville.... but I read on the website where you can get them in Escambia for $8.... is this true? Do you get them immediately in person? I've sent for Nicholas Gathleny's army pension records, but I think he died between 1885 and 1900 (either in Fort Jackson LA or in the Pensacola area). I have been unable to find any reference to him or Catherine I have found several obits in the online indexes. It's been suggested I contact a Harold Bonifay for them. Is this accurate? Are there other indexes of obits, as there are others I would be interested in that are not listed. What is the best place to go in Pensacola to research for the day.... I'd like access to the 1885 State Census, Florida death and marriage indexes, cemetery records. I think I've read where the Historical Society has most of this? Do they have a fee to research (again, I think I saw that on a webpage). The Gathleny line appears to have "died out", as it's an uncommon name anyway (I suspect it's a mangled form of another name that Nicholas got when he joined the Army before 1860). I do believe tho that there are some Diffins who might still be in the area since they had some children. Any advice on researching these families will be welcomed. 3. RE: MCAVOY, MCAVOY, MCBOY, M'BOY, MACABOY, etc: Thank you for the informative explanation of the pronunciation. I do know that DIEGO did indeed retain the name DIEGO in contrast to the Angicized version of JAMES, not just Spanish Records, but War of 1812, etc. But later down the road, decendents were named JAMES after him. There is a son of DIEGO, JR. who was named JAMES LaTURETTE MCVOY,III. Still wondering who JAMES LaTURETTE was? Does anyone recognize this name? DIEGO,Sr. was from an IRISH father--John MCAVOY. I was not sure if that was our "real" name or not, as I have seen it so many ways as you mention. I had also applied for a Pensacola 300 Certificate last year from my WILLIAM/GUILLERMO MCVOY who was brother of DIEGO is my ancestor. My ancestor did at some point go by WILLIAM-- as is on his grave. He is buried at OLD CHURCH ST.CEMETERY in MOBILE and is listed as MCVOY on the stone per the book and website info. On the PENSACOLA certificate it is MCAVOY and on an old census it is supposedly MAKBOY per the Regina Mandrell Book 1988 on the Moreno family. (1784 Census Pensacola?) Now I thought I remembered reading in that book about my ISABEL(listed there as MELOS) marrying a wealthy Spaniard named MARTIN de MADRID after JOHN MCAVOY'S death. I have seen absolutely nothing anywhere on that marriage other than the Mandrell book. I called St.Michael's in PENSACOLA and the lady said the records prior to 1861 burned. That was really a tragedy. Does anyone know more about such a marriage to a MARTIN de MADRID? There are land rec's in FL for a MARTIN MADRID on-line. What happened to DIEGO and WILIAM's elder brother JOAQUN and elder sister ANA who were both listed in the MANDRELL book as being born in the early 1770's? The way the MOBILE Baptism Certificates are written seems to imply both JOHN MCAVOY and ISABEL MILON were "still" living in 1809 when DIEGO MCVOY,JR was Baptised, yet the later Baptism of son, MARTIN in 1815 refers to both JOHN and ISABEL in the "were" past tense. Apparently they may have died in that time period?? Does anyone know where they may have been buried? Another interesting thing that points to the accuracy of the Baptismal Certificates in naming ISABEL'S maiden name of MILON is the name "MALAN" MCVOY which is found in a cemetery in MAINE in the later 1800's. Wonder if that child was named in honor of someone named MALAN. He was the son of "a" PETER MCVOY (I think) and there was a PETER MCVOY living at the Wm.MCVOY,JR household in PENSACOLA in 1870. He would have been born ca. 1856 per census age. May have been a brother to my great grandpa, MARTIN MCVOY.(b.1841) Also, Diego,Jr had a son named MELANCTHON which is also similar. It does directly state on both Baptismal Certificates that the DIEGO MCAVOY was a "NATIVE OF PENSACOLA" and we already know his father JOHN was a native of Northern IRE. There is an on-line record of "an" ISABEL MILON, b. (SPRING HILL, MOBILE AL)ca.1767 on the LDS site. She was too young to be "the" ISABEL MILON on the 1784 census unless the age on the LDS records are in error or there was another ISABEL MILON in SPRING HILL. Does anyone know anything about the MILON (any close spelling) surname in MOBILE or PENSACOLA in the late 1700's? You never know if these names are clues, coincidence or honorary, but it is good to keep an open mind. Anyway, the main point is that I know to definitely check all spellings so I don't miss anyone important. I guess that pretty much holds true for all surnames. I strongly feel it "probably" was originally MCAVOY from family lore. Thanks again for your insight and taking the time to share your thoughts. Warm regards, Bonnie McVoy Treon Kannapolis, NC,USA ---------------------- RE QUOTE: Please be aware that in Spanish ruled areas then and now a person's first name was and is changed to the Spanish equivalent. Diego is James. Your Diego/James could still have been of Irish parentage if not born in Ireland himself. You will find that in Mississippi during the Spanish control even some of the surnames were translated where possible. I have noticed some of the McAvoy/McVoy researchers spelling the name McAboy or McBoy and again that is because the V and B in Spanish are sounded very much a like and to an English speaking person listening to a Spanish speaking person the difference probably would not be discerned. For instance the female name Elvira sounds like Elvida because of the R being followed by a vowel. In the pursuit of our genealogy we have to study so much more than we ever expected when beginning. And no one warned us before we caught the 'Bug'. In one of our family languages vowels are in short supply and accent marks too plentiful to remember the sounds when they appear, for instance, Trg. Please do not think that I am being critical. I have just been watching this McAvoy discussion for a couple of years and have not seen anyone address the language aspect and thought it would be helpful to bring it up for your consideration. Lots of good luck on your family search.

    1. [FLESCAMB] PENSACOLA "MCVOY" FOLKS WERE DEFINITELY "MCAVOY" per Baptismal Rec's @ Mobile.
    2. Jeff & Bonnie
    3. **ALSO, DIEGO MCAVOY, Sr.(MCVOY) is referred to as "A NATIVE OF PENSACOLA" whereas Frausine BOSARGE is referred to as a native of the Parish where the Baptism occurred. This tends to DISPEL family lore about DIEGO being born in SCOTLAND or IRELAND as was listed in other family records. So, this supports Jim Byrne's theory about the travel to the UK would have been unlikely. (Thanks for your help.) It states that DIEGO , Sr was a NATIVE of PENSACOLA on BOTH Baptismal Certificates. 451. Today, received 2 Baptismal Certificates for sons of DIEGO MCAVOY (MCVOY). 1st was for eldest son, DIEGO MCVOY,Jr. who later became a prominent medical doctor in MOBILE. He was born Dec 9, 1807 according to the certificate. He was baptised at THE OLD CATHEDRAL OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION in MOBILE on Jan 9, 1809. The surname is spelled MCAVOY and the granparents are listed as ISABEL MILON and JOHN MCAVOY (the way it is written, I would "assume" they were still living at this time.) The maternal grandparents are listed as JOSEPH BOUZAGE and CATHERINE BAUDREAU. His "godparents" were CYRIACO LOPEZ and MARIE BOUSAGE. It is signed by the REV.VINCENT GINAN. Book 2, Section 8, Baptisms 1781-1850. 579. The Baptism of MARTIN MCAVOY occured on Wed. 1 May 1816 at the parish of IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. He was born on 6March 1815 and was the son of DIEGO SR. and Frausine BOSARGE. Same grandparents listed but in reference to JOHN MCAVOY and ISABEL MILON, the word "were" is now used in reference to them, in contrast to the word "are" from the 1809 Baptism of DIEGO MCAVOY (MCVOY) JR. The Godparents of MARTIN were JOSEPH KREBS and ELIONOR LEFLEAU. The same priest also performed this Sacrament. This is also recorded BOOK 2, SECTION 8 of the BAPTISMS.
