    3. Evan, What a kind gesture! I will email you privately about meeting up, and I certainly appreciate your offer! Our spring break here is in two weeks (I teach school) and I am planning on going over that Tuesday very early, hitting Barrancas Cemetery first (as it opens at 7 am) and then staying the rest of the day at the Genealogy Library. Might go another day to find the gravesites I am interested in in Holy Cross and St. John's cemeteries too. Thanks again, will email you privately. 2. Shelia, I agree, I set Evan up and shot him down in one paragaph, but by no means did I ever intend to insult the greatest genealogy expert that we are fortunate to have. He is helpful, kind, and shows it by offering to help a perfect stranger. I am infamous for not looking at addresses and I thought that it was going to Maura and not to the list. For that I apologize. When I read it on the list, I was sorry that I did that, but not sorry that I said that Evan was and Ole' not Old Sweetheart Most of us have sent Maura a guide as to how to get around Pensacola . this is the most helpful list of people ever assembles on one mailing list. Please lets don't destroy that. All of us at one time or another , have helped and defended you as well Shelia . What's your problem ? Doris

    2. I hate to be the sour puss, but if there is a need for something about the local resources and Ginny hasn't already put it on the Escambia County page (which I doubt !!! ) then maybe we can all contribute to the information on resources ONCE and Ginny could add them to the page ... I think that Maura's first problem resulted from too many irons in the fire, too many people giving her suggestions without much detail and in some cases with misinformation. Like which Genealogy Library does she keep talking about ??? The LDS Mormon Church's Family History Center, or does she mean the Public Library? And Evan, the Library is at North Spring and GREGORY not Garden Street !!! Another one of those Senior Moment's?? By the way, I'm not sure I'd take that kind of characterization, from Ms. Doris over there, makes you sound a toothless and mangey ole Lion who has been left to wander around the edges of the Pride's domain and beg for scraps !!! 2. Maura, Evan has forgotten more genealogy than most of us will ever know. He rarely does this kind of gesture about meeting people. He is always in demand for genealogy and he sort of hides. Good thing that you took him up on his offer. He's an ole sweetheart and harmless. He is almost a fixture at the library. He and Dolly are great folks and always willing to help. Again , Good Luck, Doris

    3. Maura, (and Phyllis, too) I've been doing geneaology around here for about 20 years and I love to help folks find their way around the local genealogy resources, and, invariably, it helps me, too. I make you this offer=== When you come to town, I'll be glad to meet you in the Public Library (WFRL) and spend some time with you getting acquainted with the town, resources, and eateries. The Society (WFGS) staffs the West Florida Regional Lib with great folks everyday, I believe---but they are there for a limited time each day. They WILL help you. Also, Dolly, of the regular staff is superb for help. It's a public place, safe to meet for new folks, and most any day, you can find enough folks to help you create a list of "things to do while you're here." (They are closed Sundays & Mondays. Also, easy to find---downtown, at Spring and Garden Sts. Usually always a parking place--free. Places to eat close by. And I have some expertise in cemeteries of the county! Feel free to call me when you come to town (or before, if you're planning well), I have a GREAT work schedule, with plenty of days off. We have a lot of folks here who like to help! Also, as anyone who knows me can verify, I KNOW places to eat! ;=) Feel free! Call me anytime. Or, email me privately. [email protected] Evan STROHL (850) 433-4927 (Sorry, Answer machine is on the blink til about Wednesday.) I believe Ginny DEAGAN, our Society's WebMaster, would vouch for me. 3. I have only been a part of this list for about three weeks, but would like to make a suggestion. When members of the list ask questions, such as Maura did regarding researching in Pensacola, it would be very helpful if replies could be done through the list, rather than private, so that the information is shared. I am planning a trip to Pensacola to do research (I live in CA) and was very interested in the questions Maura asked about researching there. I was disappointed to find out that she received replies privately, and so myself and others missed out on the helpful information. I would also like to mention that the members of this list have been very helpful, and the Escambia County GenWeb page is one of the best I have seen! Phyllis

    2. Maura, the library at 200 W. Gregory St has Census Film and a great Staff to help you, There are quite a few places to lunch in old downtown Pensacola. Some of the places are like walking back in time. They are old homes that were made into resturants. Just ask anyone at the library, they will direct you. As for bringing in water, I never did but it sounds like a great idea to keep from drinking from the public water fountain. Happy Hunting and have a good time, Doris

    3. Thanks to all who have answered me privately and on list,...... however, I have been through all the pages on the County page, however, nowhere are the state censuses mentioned and yet I was told that one of these facilities had them to look at. Which one? That might be something to add to the appropriate page. And are there nearby places to lunch near the Genealogy Library? Or can you bring a bottle of water in with you? Several months ago, someone on the list was searching for a Confederate ancestor who died in Bardstown during the Civil War. Today I went to a local cemetery and found several names of Confederate soldiers listed for your States (message being sent to several mailing lists). A monument has existed here for many years in the Bardstown Cemetery for sixty-seven Confederate soldiers buried there who died in the area, sixty-six in 1862 and one in 1863. Recently, smaller headstones were placed in the burial area for those identified. Seventeen soldiers still remain unknown. After stopping at the cemetery today for the headstone listings, I did a very quick search at the library and found that General Bragg's army fought several battles in the area of Bardstown in 1862 against General Buell's Union forces. During September and October, 1862, several battles were fought around Bardstown. The majority of those listed at the cemetery died during this period. Please remember that this was a quick search. Please also remember that many Confederate soldiers are buried in other areas of Nelson County. The main monument reads as follows (no date of dedication listed): "This monument is erected in the memory of the 67 brave men buried here, who lost their lives in the service of the Confederate Government. Lord God of Hosts be with us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget Marble tells not of their valors' worth, Nameless they rest in the earth We care not whence they came, Dear in their lifeless clay, Whether unknown or known to fame, Their cause and country still the same, They died and wore the gray. The headstones are placed around the main monument in order of death. For the listing below, I've sorted them by surname. The information shows surname, given name, company, unit (with State), CSA, and date of death. Hope this helps someone. I'll be unsubscribing to the mailing list(s) once I post this since I'm not searching in your State(s). I'm hoping to spend at least one day soon over in Pensacola researching, and people are telling me that the West Florida Regional LIbrary is the place that has the most. But I"m getting confused between that, the Genealogy Society, UWF library, and the Historical Society. Could someone send something to the list on just what place is what? Which place has the newspapers on microfilm and the death certificates on microfilm? Thanks..... 3. Maura, The West Florida Regional library is located downtown off Spring Street they are opened Tues-Sat. As far as I know they have newspapers. The University of West Florida library has newspapers on their second floor; and a geneology collection in their basement. Their geneology collections is called Special Collections and the hours are M-F 8-4:30. I have never been to the Geneology society or the Historical Society. ----- Original Message ----- From: Maura <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 01, 2000 5:30 PM Subject: [FLESCAMB] Research places in Pensacola > Well, I've read through all the online info on the Escambia county site, > and call me dense, but I'm still getting confused a lot - -maybe because > people are referring to the same places in different ways? > > I'm hoping to spend at least one day soon over in Pensacola researching, > and people are telling me that the West Florida Regional LIbrary is the > place that has the most. > > But I"m getting confused between that, the Genealogy Society, UWF > library, and the Historical Society. > > Could someone send something to the list on just what place is what? > Which place has the newspapers on microfilm and the death certificates > on microfilm? > > Thanks..... > > > Maura [email protected] > *********************************** > Helpful Hints for Successful Searching > http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm > To join the SHAMROCK list (for searching in all of Ireland), send only > the word subscribe in the body of an email to > [email protected] or [email protected] > for the digest version >

Thought it went well with the recent discussion of "Fritz" >> Hi Barb and everyone, This pretty much holds true with Hispanics surnames as well. Rodriguez = son of Rodrigo Hernandez = son of Hernando Fernandez = son of Fernando Gonzalez = son of Gonzalo Sanchez = son of Sancho or Santos I'm sure I could think of more. :) Analee, IBSSG ==============

Pensacola was fortunate to have an organized Board of Health , beginnin as early as the 1870's, as did a number of other cities in Florida whose records cover different period prior to statewide civil registration beginning in 1917. The early birth and death records referenced in the Index are from the city Boards of Health in these few cities. The West Florida GS produced a 3 volume series of books covering the early Pensacola Vital Records (1891 to 1910). The Health Dept. also had a few records from the Navy Yard (including Warrington and Woolsey villages). The Navy Yard records were included in the 3 volumes. I checked all 3 for the name Gathleny, and variants, but sorry to say found nothing even close. So they must have been living in the county areas not covered by either the Warrington Woolsey areas or the City limits. Ms. Sheila Lilia Martin ((( >^..^< )))
