FL claims they searched the records and he was not listed during those years. I cannot use Social Security or marriage records, because although I have all of those, they are useless because he lied on all of them and got away with it. He claimed to have been born in Butte, Montana where the courthouse burned. His older sister says that was a lie--they were never out of the state of FL. When he retired he actually used the paperwork from his work that claimed his age when his sons were born to "prove" his age and that seemed to work for them. I even have those documents. What I really want is the birth certificate to find out information on his parents.
I just received a death certificate. wrote to; Office of Vital Statistics P.O. Box 210 Jacksonville, Fl 32231-0042 enclosed a check for $7.00 I had the name and date of death plus location (Pensacola ) Received a FULL certificate all the parents names, cause of death and so on. This is the first time I have received a full positive death certificate date of death was 1949. 53 years ago I do not know if this made a difference. I have asked for death certs from 1910 and received strange copies that had my information on it and nothing more. Any way now you have the address and amount. Be sure to include any information you do have. Happy hunting Helen
I have just uploaded a file of Genealogical information extracted from "The New Pensacola" The Deep Water City of the Gulf" - information on the businesses in Pensacola in 1905. Most sketches give the length of time the business has been in operation and often tells where the owner came from. My mother born in Pensacola 1898, had to get a copy of her birth cert. so she could get social security. First thing she found was "the fire" no records, and then most people who knew when she was born were dead. She had a copy of her baptism from St. Michael's Church the SSn people accepted this in lieu of birth cert.. Hope this helps. Helen
There is a possibility there was no birth record. My mother and her twin sister and her younger sister had no birth certificates. My grandmother said the doctors and/or midwives would come to the homes and they were suppose to have recorded it and sent to the records office. Some didn't bother to do so and some maybe forget to file it. They later in life went to the Health Department and filed for birth certificates. I have found this happening over my many years of research not just in Florida but other states as well. The best thing to do is try and locate a family member that has a Bible record of that family ..... if you know about the areas they lived in search back in the census records. These 2 things helped me tremendously. I have been collecting my families old Bibles .... I have found more info than just birth/marriage/death records ........ great resource. Good luck in your search. Jinx Nall Dopson
Check with each individual county. Escambia county did keep birth RECORDS from about 189-1911. They are at the Health Department, but have been published by the West FL Gen Soc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt and Lisa Hurley" <hurleytalk@surry.net> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 9:28 PM Subject: Re: [FLESCAMB]birth certificate question > If the state of FL denies having a person's birth records on file (although > this is a possibility, with home births and the like) for a time period of > 1914-1919, is there somewhere else I should search? It it is always possible that someone can "say" there is "no" certificate, but most likely it is definitely possible that the certificate is not there. The earlier the years for births, the more the chances are that there is NO birth certificate for the person. Lot of women had their children at home and babies were delivered by family members, neighbors, or midwives thereby increasing the chance that no birth certificate was ever registered for the baby. If he was ever in the military, you may want to get copies of his records and his birth date info may be on those. If he applied for Social Security number then you can get a copy of his original application form and his birth info and parents names should be on there.
Florida did not require birth certificates before 1921. I wrote that to Lisa . cd
I too could not find a record of my grandfather's birth in Florida in the year 1909. When it came time to file for social security no birth record could be found so he had his older brother sign an affidavit stating when and where he was born. You might want to check into getting a copy of the death certificate for a date of birth, if that is all that is needed. It should list the place of birth as well. When you request a birth certificate they will issue you a "Record Not Found" certificate stating that no record was found on file for the State of Florida if one cannot be located. It is not a question of not looking for one, but more of a question of not finding one. Apparently, they did not keep very good records back then. You should also check census records for 1920. Have you actually had confirmation that the State of Florida will deny giving out or searching for a birth certificate for those born in FL between 1914 - 1919? My family has tried twice and my mother once to get her birth certificate from Vital Records in Jax. All times, we were told no records could be found. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt and Lisa Hurley" <hurleytalk@surry.net> To: <FLESCAMB-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 10:28 PM Subject: Re: [FLESCAMB]birth certificate question If the state of FL denies having a person's birth records on file (although this is a possibility, with home births and the like) for a time period of 1914-1919, is there somewhere else I should search? If the state of FL denies having a person's birth records on file (although this is a possibility, with home births and the like) for a time period of 1914-1919, is there somewhere else I should search?
