However most of the answers I don't have. Since the first child came in 1875 the marriage was probably somewhere around that time. Finding pre earthquake records in San Francisco is neigh impossible. In the 1880 OR census he was listed as an out of work laborer (broken leg). He was also listed with a brother Samuel R. Fleming born abt.1860. I've been through the entire Allen County census for 1860 and could find no mention of him or her. I have a feeling they met in CA but that's just a feeling. Now I have to go through the entire San Francisco census for 1870 (ouch!) and look for the both of them. The other possibility is that Vara's family was "just passing through" Fort Wayne on their way to somewhere else. What puzzles me is why would somebody leave San Francisco, the largest city in Claifornia in that day, and go to Oregon City, OR? There's a clue there somewhere but I just haven't found it yet.... Just before he presumably died around 1896 his occupation was listed as laborer, longshoreman and finally hostiler in the Polk indexs for San Francisco.
