In 1784, a James Fleming, 9 in family, the Capon Bridge area and another James Fleming, 4 in family, south of the above that overlaps with Hardy. This from Mary E, Pugh, Hampshire Co. Public Library, in response to a query. There are no James Flemings in the tax lists from 1800-1814 or in the 1810 or 1820 census. She also sent me some exerpts from Allegheny Passage, Churches and Families, West MarVa District, Church of the Brethren, 1752-1990 by Emmert F. Bittinger, 1990. On p. 205, begins a section on The Fleming Family that states: Several Fleming families were established in Hampshire Co. by 1800, some becoming Brethren there. James Fleming became a minister. At least some of the Hampshire Co. Flemings came from Frederick Co., MD, where numerous Flemings lived. In a letter to the author, 18 Sep 1986, Nancy Kiddo states that James Fleming's mother married secondly a Castle and that he (p. 206 starts here) was raised with the Castles. He lived in Frederick Co., MD, and served as an officer in the Revolutionary War. Immediately after the War, he and his family bought lands offered by Fairfax and settled in Hampshire Co. ... A James Fleming of Frederick Co., MD, frequently signed documents for Brethren people. ... In Hampshire Co., a James Fleming began purchasing land in the 1780's. In 1784, he purchased 107 acres of land on Beaver Run from Matthias and Ann Beaver, who had purchased it 2 years earlier from Peter Beaver, Matthias's father. Apparently, James Fleming already owned land in Hampshire Co., for on 12 Jun 1793, he sold 212 acres to Dunker Henry Miller from MD (Sage and Jones, 69, 18). In fact, James Fleming may have been something of a land speculator, for he made nearly a dozen sizable land purchases, most lying along Beaver Run and Mill Creek. ... Land records reveal that his 107 acre lot on Beaver Run lay adjacent to Henry Neff and Samuel Arnold. Thomas Smoot, possibly a son-in-law of Dunker, Henry Neff, also purchased land from James Fleming. His transactions took place on 10 Mar 1795, 2 days before Smoot sold parcels to Jacob Biser and Daniel Eller. A James Fleming also speculated in land further west in Harrison Co, ... The James Fleming from whom descend the Dunker families lived on 500 acres of land on Lick Run which is a tributary of Mill Creek. His land lay just west of Mill Creek on what is called today, Fleming Road, about a mile or so from Junction. It lay close also to the Arnolds, Ludwicks and Bisers, less than a mile distant. He also bought land from Dunker, Henry Neiff (Neff). ... (p. 207) ... The following year, on 10 and 12 Mar 1795, Thomas Smoot and his wife Catharine sold 21 acres to Daniel Eller and 60 acres to Jacob Biser, both lots lying adjacent to each other on Mill Creek (Sage and Jones, 54). Witnesses to these transactions were James Fleming, John Biser and Peter Engel. ... Bill [email protected]
