He his wife,Elizabeth and their children were listed on the 1850 Federal Census of Coffee Co. He stated he was born in Georgia. There are several GEDCOMs listing him as the son of John Fleming of Charleston, SC and his Indian wife, K. Gassaway. I have been unable to find any proof of this. Can anyone help?
