JAMES EDWARD FLEMING, 73, was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008. He graduated from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA with a Bachelor of Science. He taught Mathematics at Howard University while pursuing a Masters Degree at American University. He was awarded the Doctor of Medicine Degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1962. He completed an internship and first year residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland. He then completed a two year residency in Internal Medicine and became Chief Resident at the Veteran Administration Hospital. "Dr. Jim" was a private practitioner who energetically and enthusiastically cared for the underserved communities in the Cleveland area for more than 30 years. He founded a multispecialty group practice in East Cleveland, which thrived over four decades. He served as Medical Director of Community Action Against Addiction; consultant for the United States Department of Health Edu! cation and Welfare-Bureau of Hearing and Appeals; and Medical Director of the Carnegie Care Center. He served as Medical Director at Ford Motor Company prior to his retirement. He was past President of the Cleveland Chapter of the National Medical Assn. He was a member of the Kent State University Board of Trustees and later Chairman Emeritus. He helped establish and served on the Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) Board of Trustees for 15 years. He was awarded the Provost's Award for distinguished service to the Medical School. He received the Distinguished Service Award from his Alma Mater, Geneva College, in 1986. He was presented the Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Youngstown State University in 1988. He was conferred an additional Honorary Doctor of Laws from NEOUCOM in 1992. He was the beloved son of Mary and Homer Fleming (both deceased); brother of the following deceased: William, Homer Jr., Reoma and Mildred. He is mourned and survived by h! is long term companion, Ellen Berger, his three sons and their familie s: Dr. James Fleming Jr. and Linda Fleming, Christopher D. Fleming and Jessica Abrahams, Mark T. Fleming and Rolanda C. Warner; grandchildren: Brooks P. Brown, James E. Fleming III, Maximilian P. Fleming, Lucas D. Fleming, Clarke N. Fleming; sister, Lucille Preston; nieces, Barbara Dickey, Doreen Dickey and Alison Dickey. In addition, he leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and cherished friends. The family will receive friends MONDAY, DEC. 8, 2008 5-8 P.M. AT E.F. BOYD & SON FUNERAL HOME, 2165 E. 89TH ST., CLEVELAND, OH. Funeral Service is Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 10 a.m. at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, 8712 Quincy Ave., Cleveland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the NEOUCOM Scholarship Fund in Rootstown, Ohio.
