Author: johnbb49 Surnames: Fleming, Witherspoon Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2297/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am posting a follow-up on the DNA testing that would support or refute the claim that John Fleming b. 1776 was the son of James Fleming, son of John b. 1685/Janet Witherspoon. The results are in. We tested a very well documented descendant of William Fleming b. 1777 who was the son of James and grandson of John Fleming/Janet Witherspoon. The results were that his DNA showed NO MATCHING to our participant who is a well documented descendant of John Fleming b. 1776. Yet, he did match several other Flemings in the study whose pedigree didn't go back that far. Instead, John b. 1776 turns out to me part of my line which descends from John Fleming b. 1688 who immigrated to DE and lived in MD. This is consistent with documents that show that my ancestors once lived in MD. I have also found an 1880 Washington,FL census showing Littleberry, son of John b. 1776 to be alive and giving NC as the birth state of John, not SC. This information refutes Lee Reese's book and the claims of others that John b. 1776 was born in SC and descended from John b. 1685. The John Fleming, son of James, son of John b. 1685/Janet Witherspoon died in 1816 and he is not the same man as John b. 1776 who lived until 1840 when he died in AL.
