Author: RRathbon Surnames: Fleming Flemming Flemington, Fleeming etc Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2350/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Letting you know I've just uploaded a further 200 spouses to the Enland/Wales marriage index so it now has over 4,000 spouses and it's passsed the halfway mark! - but now I need your help. Please continue building this unique resource. It reduces the guesswork for everyone ordering Fleming certificates(and all the variants including Flemington). Just note the details from any birth, death, marriage certificate or parish register entry 1837 - 1911 you have in an email to me. Your privacy and research endeavor is always respected. Your transcripts wont ever be published by me or sold etc but individual transcripts will be shared with a likely connection unless you request otherwise. Until more records are available online, I believe I have reached a slowing point with this index without spending a loads of money or retiring to get at parish registers!! so I'm hoping we'll get more than a few certicate or parish register transcripts to reduce the remaining total. Courtesy of the SRO, the Scotland marriage index comes with the spouse already identified, but as the England marriages is slowing, I'm hoping you'll have some England & scotland births to keep filling the gaps in these indexes as well. Meanwhile explore the indexes! http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fleming/transcripts.htm Many thanks Ruth Rathbone http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fleming/ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: maryachtrh Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2349/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 22 October 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma DEATH TO MANY Hoisting Machine Gives Way and Hurls Men to Death A Dozen Workmen Instantly Killed Eight of the Dead Have Been Recovered - Five Men Seriously Hurt - Many Are Yet Supposed to be Pinned Under the Wreckage Pittsburg, Pennsylvania: By the breaking of the ropes carrying five beams to their position, letting many tons of iron fall upon the moving crane at the Pittsburg end of the new Wabash bridge being built by the American Bridge Company over the Monongaheia River, almost a dozen workmen were hurled to death by a fall of more than 100 feet, striking the water and two barges underneath. Eight of the dead have been recovered. Five men were seriously hurt. Several bodies are yet pinned under the wrecked barge. The part of the bridge extending out over the river from the Water Street side is a total wreck. The casualties follow: William C. Fleming, George Wells, James McLoud, Frederick Stallinger, J. Campbell, William Kitlinger, Frank Dalby; the missing are Edward Morris and Phillip Morris. Deputy Corner L. C.Huckle made an investigation at the scene of the disaster. He believes the blame rests on whoever was in charge of the hoisting and fastening of the I beam. He says that a failure to properly secure one derrick load caused the breaking strain to fall on the crane. The accident was caused by the giving way of a two-inch steel cable which was used as one of the guys to support the big crane. This cable was tested to bear a strain of 100 tons, and it is said that it did no break but pulled loose from its fastenings. There were thirty-four men at work on the superstructure of the bridge and in the barge below, from which the beams were being hoisted by the crane, 1,775 feet above the river lever, when the booms collapsed. Of the men who were in the barge, some escaped with their lives by jumping into the river the moment they heard the crash above. Some of the men on the superstructure who were engaged in riveting and handling the bars that were lifted from the barge also got off uninjured. 3. My comments were generic. In the specific instance of the FLEMING surname, please see Janet Fleming-Flemming's post. All of the DNA companies I know of have very accurate/precise results - what you get is a string of numbers. The key is having an active Project Administrator who takes an interest in each person who participates and has the big picture for the FLEMING/FLEMMING surname and has a goal to help and map out ALL the FLEMING/FLEMMING lines. I do that for the BARTLETT-DNA Project, and Janet is very active with the FLEMING-DNA Project - I would contact her and join her project for sure. I'm still looking for someone from my FLEMING line to participate in FLEMING DNA. My line goes back to a James FLEMING of Frederick Co, MD (m Ann JOHNSON) who was a LT in RevWar, wounded, moved after the war to Hampshire Co, VA then to Harrison Co, (W)VA, where Ann died and he remarried and then he died. I would be happy to share costs with any male FLEMING from this line in Janet's project. Many of us are trying to sort out the PA/MD/VA Flemings. 3. The Fleming DNA Project at www.dna.ancestry.com is going great we have over 100 Fleming males and more in process. As far as I know it is the biggest FLEMING project (as far as numbers) and we are having very interesting and rewarding results as far as matches, mis-matches and kin finding kin they did not know of. If there are any Fleming male or females that are interested in joining our project please email me for details of a discount offer. Also those who already have results from another company other than RG/DNA.Ancestry can upload there signature to the project to compare with our other participants. My goal is to have atleast 2,000 Fleming males to see the big picture of our Fleming tree, and its branches from Flanders to UK to the colonies and/or back to Europe after being branded with the surname of Fleming/Flemming etc. So we have a long way to go. I would be pleased to hear from any interested FLEMING males or females if they are keen to come on board our project. All variants of the surname welcome to join. 3. Family Tree DNA is the oldest and largest (and for me the most genealogy friendly). Ancestry recently joined with a different lab to market DNA products. The benefit of the new DNA-Genealogy tool, is being able to take your DNA result and compare it with others with the same surname. You could visit both of their websites and see if they have a Fleming surname project that you can join (with FTDNA you get a good discount by joining an existing project). At any company's site you should be able to link up with others who have your surname and are getting tested - the only way to use the DNA is to compare with others and find a common ancestor. Author: msw33850 Surnames: Fleming, Bothel, Greeley, Hunt, Sloan Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2040.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello! I am very curious about the descendants of the elder Robert Flemming who died in 1824. My Eliza Fleming was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1822. Her sister Mary Ann was born there about 1819. Catharine Flemming (their mother?) bought land in Shelby County and lived with the two young women near the Greeley, Bothel and Hunt families. Catharine Flemming married William H. Sloan in 1840 when she was aged 30-40, according to census. I looked at census and tax records and at one time suspected that a Robert Flemming may have been Eliza and Mary Ann's father. I could not find land records or a will for him. Is there any chance that my family is related to yours?
