Author: RichardFleming21 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2128.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for the response to my post. Here are my notes from my family tree software. I have Newsom Cooper, Jr.'s notes and photographs of gravestones. I talked to Newsom several times and he believes in his research concerning EDR's parents John Fleming and Sarah Roberts. I cannot find, and I have looked, for any other evidence or reference for EDR's parents to be able to follow ancestors back. It gets interesting and murky for the next several generations back so I am only as sure as Newsom. Newsom's dad Newsom Cooper Sr. married Mary George Fleming, one of three children of my ggrandfather Marcus Lafayette Fleming. Here is the "Notes" part of EDR Fleming: "Elkany Dulany Rush Fleming raised a large family in Kentucky. Information from Newsom Cooper, Jr. (who did extensive research into EDR Fleming and possibly his ancestors) and photographs he took in 1983 on E.D.R Fleming's home place and large monuments at Cooper Cemetery, Cooper Church, Wayne County, KY, about 4 miles south of Monticello, KY. Grave monuments for EDRF and Dorcas just have E. D. R. Fleming and Dorcas engraved. The monuments are tall and slender and here is not room for the full names. Photos clearly show Fleming, not Flemming and dates. Died of Sposattic Cholera at Beaver Creek, Wayne County, KY. Attended by Dr. J. Frisbie. Copy of marriage bond of Dulany R. Fleming (Flemming was put on the document by Test clerk, a Mr. Simpson) and Francis B. Vickery (Dorcas's father) for the upcoming marriage between Dulany R. Fleming and Dorcas Vickery is dated Sept. 11, 1833. When Dulany signed the document he signed Dulany R. Fleming. They are married 4 days later." In Newsom, Jr's notes he arrived at the Elkany Dulany Rush Fleming name after considering several possibilities. He also research many John Flemings and concluded that the best possible John was John and Sarah. That is all I have and will share. Do you have more? My grandmother was a daughter of Marshall and Gdaughter of George Washington--EDR was his father. EDR appears in the 1850 census, and is tombstone is listed in the Wayne County, Ken, rootsweb site, but I can't seem to take him back any further. Were John Fleming and Sarah ROberts his parents? I have seen lines running back from there to Tarleton Fleming/Mary Randolph, but the dates make me think this is a stretch. Do you know anything about EDR's parents? Where did you get the Elkany Dulaney Rush full name? I know it's been a long time since you wrote... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Fleming who moved west to Harrison & Wood counties and married Ida Bassel in 1887. I believe they had at least one son, Walter Bassel Fleming, and they resided in Parkersburg at the time of Walter, Sr.'s death in 1917. Other children born to Solomon & Sarah were (based on the 1860 census): Mary Jane Fleming, Ellen D. Fleming, and Catharine A. Fleming. Mary Jane (Jennie) Fleming married Archibald McCarroll in 1861 in Jefferson Co., WV. Any information on the line (including Solomon's parents), would be appreciated. Thanks! As it turns out my patriarch from MD is a descendant of either John Fleming b. 1688 or Alexander Fleming b. 1711. We have learned this from the Relative Genetics/Ancestry Y chromosone DNA study. What would be helpful for both of us is to find a living, male, Fleming descendant of the Fleming/Charltons to enter into the same DNA study. It could help map our relationships.
