    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: PatriciaHamill51 Surnames: Fleming, Freeman, Tilson, Coleman, Ashley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.fleming/2060.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for laying out your line. My gedcom program says that we, you and I, are 4C1R. William Freeman & Sarah Fleming are my GGGG Grandparents and your GGG Grandparents. I had brief contact with another researcher whose is a descendant of John H Freeman and I will e-mail you off line concerning that contact. This is wonderful. Could you please send the title and author of the book you have on Smyth County, VA. I would like to try and find a copy of this book to read. Trying to trace the whereabouts of William N Freeman has been one of my goals. I have heard though not seen documents that he was in Nottaway County, Virginia. According to the Mortality Schedule of 1880 it says that he had residence in Smyth County, VA for 40 years. I did see Fleming and Freemans in the Tax Lists for 1791 [John Fleming] and 1801[John Fleming and John Freeman]. But I don't know much beyond that Are you interested in Elizabeth Freeman Ashley's line. What little I know. I feel that I have more questions then answers. I believe that I have solved one mystery. There is a girl in the 1850 Census household of William and Sarah Freeman named Patsy age 3. In 1860 Census household of William and Sarah Freeman there is a Martha M age 13. I believe that this Martha Freeman is the daughter of Elizabeth Freeman. When Martha M Freeman marries to William F Tilson in 1862 there is an consent form which is signed by Elizabeth Ashley and it states that her mother was Elizabeth Freeman. William F Tilson dies in the Civil War. Martha M Freeman Tilson and William F Tilson have a daughter named Sarah born October 1863. Everyone is missing in the 1870 census. But in the 1880 census John Ashley household is strange. There is a wife named Elizabeth who I assume is Elizabeth Freeman. Son named John Ashley whose age predates the marriage of Elizabeth Freeman and John Ashley. I never see him again. He is a mystery. Daughter named Sarah whose age is the same as Sarah Tilson's age should be - I think that she is Sarah Tilson raised by John & Elizabeth Ashley. Daughter name Mary, I have her birth record and it states that her parents are John and Elizabeth Ashley. Alice, a niece. Alice later marries and states her parents names are America Freeman [no father named]. Then there is Martha M Coleman, daughter Law to John Ashley. I think that this is Martha who was named as daughter of Elizabeth and married William Tilson. So lots of mystery. By the way: Sarah, Mary, and Alice marry brothers: George, David Jesse, and John/Jonah Willis in Russell County, VA. I would love to go further back with William Nance Freeman and Sarah Fleming. Their daughter Willie Reed Legrand is my grandmother married to John Barton and my father Gerald Delbert Barton married to Beatrice Thelma Wood and my maiden name is Diane Adrienne Barton. Im from Texas but live in Boston now. I do have a book on Smyth County Virginia which documents Jack Freeman being washed overboard at sea. My grandmother had knowledge of their being shipbuilders.
