"Great grandfather Warren McCord Fleming was born January 17, 1856 in Muskingam County, Ohio. At an early age he lived with his great-aunt Mary Jane (Fleming) Smith in Ohio. In 1877, at the age of 21, he came to the Arthur, IL area, along with the Smiths, his Uncle Charles W. Fleming and other Fleming relatives. He was later the Mayor of Arthur, started the first telephone system in Arthur; and, in conjunction with partners, he operated a hardware store, furniture and undertaking business in the Fleming Opera House in Arthur. He was elected sheriff of Moultrie County in 1910 and he, his wife and youngest son were the first occupants of the living quarters in the current Moultrie County Jail. He had six sons and two daughters, all now deceased. "During the late afternoon on Friday, the 27 year old son of a local attorney had accosted a young lady rather severely. The attorney and his family were friends of Sheriff Fleming and his family. The Sheriff had been out of town most of the day. Upon his return, a warrant was issued. The unarmed Sheriff and his deputies drove to the residence of the assailant. As Sheriff Fleming stepped out of the car at 7:00 PM, the assailant fired one shot from his shotgun. When the assailant learned what he had done, he went into a cornfield and shot himself. That date was September 5, 1913. "Sheriff Fleming is the only police officer in Moultrie County to give his life in the line of duty. Sheriff Fleming has been accepted into the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington, DC, the Illinois Police Officers Memorial in Springfield, IL, and the American Police Hall of Fame in Miami, Florida." The above was taken from memorial dedication at the Moultrie County Sheriff's Office in 1990. At the time this was written in 1990, there were 7 living grand children including Helen (Herdt) Day and husband John, Mary (Fleming) Pankey and husband Burl, Martha (Fleming) Albers and husband Delbert, and William Lawrence Fleming and wife Aileen (my Mom & Dad). Larry Fleming [email protected] Note to William T. Fleming: Bill, I found this in my basement along with a article concerning the dedication from the Sullivan, IL "News Progress" dated March 28, 1990. My Dad, William who is still alive, is looking for information concerning Warren's Mother. It appears, however they were from Ohio and not Illinois as I had previously thought.
Hi All, Just to restate my interest. I'm looking for the family of Jane Fleming, who married Henry Gough and in 1910 had a daughter, Sarah in South Wales. Family tradition refers to Sarah (and therefore presumably at least one of her parents) as possibly Irish. I've seen references to a couple of other Flemings in the area: Charles' son William lodging in nearby Glamorgan, also references to a Fleming family from Co Kerry moving into Merthyr Tydfil c 1850. As yet I have no idea whether either of these are related. This is recent information, and I'm not able to get to an LDS to check the usual sources, but apparently Flemings are scarce in that area. Any help or hints, especially about researching them in Ireland if necessary, would be appreciated. I have just begun on my Fleming line. I have noticed on other lists that the early Flemings were located all over the place. Our line came from Pa. There have been Flemings in Va. and N & S Ca. as well as southern states. Does anyone know if they are from the same line in this country? immigrated as a family? came at different times? from different countries? Patience [email protected]

Fellow researchers, This is a note to let everyone know that I am now officially set up in my new location. If there's anything I can do to make our discussion group better, please let me know. A couple of notes just to remind folks of my personal policy regarding discussion groups. Firstly, please remember to be kind and gentle with one another; that is, no "flaming." By "flaming" I mean anything that is written to intentionally put another person down. This includes "zingers" and "barbs" (nasty one-liners) or "long harangues" (the soap-box syndrom). I reserve the right to remove anyone from the list who persists in such behavior. This being said, I realize that all of us from time to time get out of sorts and can say things that we later regret. I will only remove those who are persistently nasty. Nuff' said about that. Secondly, please remember that this is YOUR group, not mine only. I look forward to hearing from fellow researchers looking for a family clue or sharing valuable information with those who have found common ancestors. In short, please feel free to use this discussion group as a forum for your family research. As many of you know, I possess a lot of information about some of my family lines. I will not hesitate to share any information I have with anyone who requests it. Sometimes I share this information "off-line" (that is, apart from the discussion group). However, I have discovered that sending the information via the group is a better way to go. The reason for this is that many others may benefit from the information flow besides the individual in question. While this is approach is delightful to some, others may find it irritating. All I can say to this is that if the information doesn't pertain to you, it's very easy to delete it. My personal preference is that too much information is better than too little. Besides, isn't this what genealogy discussion groups are all about--the sharing of information and helping one another connect to our roots? In closing, my basic philosophy is that pretty much anything is acceptable which benefits others in finding their family roots. I have learned so much from many of you in these groups and I hope that I have been of some help as well. Well, enough "philosophizing!" I'm happy to be back in the States and finally settled in to my new place. Happy hunting! Bob Francis Listowner--Fleming, Hinkson, McCune, Shawhan, and Trower Surnames

Cousins, The final stage of our "wandering in the wilderness" is almost over! We have finally arrived to our final destination, Ft. Eustus, Virginia. Our new address is: Bob and Cindy Francis 1920A Butner Street Fort Eustis, Virginia 23604 We are still settling in and do not have a phone hook-up yet. However, the phone should be turned on by this coming Tuesday. I have a new e-mail address which should remain permanent. The e-mail address is: [email protected] I still have my old e-mail address ([email protected]) but I'm going to discontinue using it. I found that using a remote server is more trouble than it's worth. I am currently using my in-laws' e-mail address but that will come to an end Sunday morning. So, it's great to be back in the States where I can begin family research in earnest. I look forward to someday meeting some of you and getting to know you in person. Best regards, Bob Francis Listowner: Fleming, Hinkson, McCune, Shawhan & Trower Surnames
Does anyone have an Irena Fleming in your family line? Our g-grandmother was Irena Frances Rains. We have found some info. that leads us to believe her mother's maiden name was Fleming. Irena Frances married Henry George Gunkel in 1879 in Red River Co. TX. We have searched for her mother's maiden name but have found no connections until last week. We have found an Irena Fleming who married a Rains in Red River Co. Irena Frances Rains sisters were Lucinda, Annie, Mattie, and Bird. Appreciate any help. Thanks, [email protected]
