Having just come into the Fleming forum I am behind in what you have apparently been posting. But I want to be sure which state your Hampshire Co is in. Thanks Ed T of PGH Am still looking for the parents of Jane Fleming who married Joseph Chapman in CHarleston very early 1800s.
Hi, I guess the list is back and I am surprized there is no backlog of messages. Onward. The next Fleming family in Hampshire is that of Patrick. This is not my family and I have no more on it than I am presenting here. It is merely contemporary with mine and has to be looked at to separate it's records from mine. The first reference I have is the Hampshire County Tax Lists: 1800, 1 white titheable, 3 horses; 1801, 1 white titheable, 3 horses; 1802, 1 white titheable, 3 horses, 1 slave; 1803, 1 white titheable, 4 horses, 1 slave; 1805, 1 white titheable, 5 horses, 1 slave; 1806, 1 white titheable, 5 horses, 1 slave; 1807, 1 white titheable, 5 horses, 1 slave; 1809, 1 white titheable, 5 horses, 1 slave; 1810, 1 white titheable, 5 horses; 1811, 1 white titheable, 6 horses; 1812, 1 white titheable, 6 horses; 1813, 1 white titheable, 7 horses; 1814, 1 white titheable, 6 horses. Next, I have the census, 1810, 3 males under 10, 1 male, 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 2 females, 10 to 16, 1 female, 26 to 45; 1820. 2 males under 10, 1 male 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 26, 1 female 45 or over. Allegheny Passage, already cited in reference to James, p. 206, "Another Fleming family, Brethren or Brethren-related, was that of Patrick Fleming. His will was probated in Hampshire County, on Oct. 10, 1838, and he names six children (Sage and Jones, 115): 1) James, 2) Ann (whose husband was Lazarus Shirley), 3) John, 4) Edward, 5) Catherine, and 6) Christina (wife of William Kline). His wife, unnamed, must have been deceased. Witnesses were Dunkers, Josiah Smoot and Benjamin Arnold. It is no surprise then that Fleming offspring intermarried with some of the Brethren families of Mill Creek and Beaver Run. For example, John Fleming, born 1809 and died 1881 married Mollie Arnold, born 1813 and died 1905. She was a daughter of Elder Samuel Arnold of Beaver Run. They are buried in the Arnold Cemetery. They became the parrents of Elder James Fleming who preached at Pine Church and served faithfully there for most of his life. Two James Flemings are (p. 207 starts here) buried in the Arnold Cemetery, one who was born in 1800 and another who was born in 1854. The Fleming family will be discussed in connection with the history of the Pine Church. The Fleming name remains on the Beaver Run Church lists in the 1870s, and many Flemings in additition to those named above are buried in the Arnold Cemetery." P. 254 continues: "The Fleming family was discussed in cinnection with the beginnings of the Beaver Run Church. This family came to Hampshire County from Frederick Co., MD in the late 1700s and established itself on Mill Creek and Beaver Run. The family is important to Pine Church, because John Fleming, born 1809 and died 1881, married Mollie Arnold who was a daughter of Elder Samuel Arnold of Beaver Run. The Fleming family became Brethren and contributed to the growth of the congregation. Many Flemings are buried in the old Arnold Cemetery. The Fleming family lived on Lick Run, and offspring of the family scattered southward up the Mill Creek toward Pine Church. Thus, because of the closeness to Pine, some of them attended there at an early date. James Fleming, son of John and Mollie Arnold Fleming, and his wife were strong members of Pine and White Pine during their entire lives. Their names appear on the Upper Mill Creek list of the Beaver Run Church before the White Pine congregation was split off from Beaver Run. James was apparently called to the ministry late in life, perhaps in the 1890s. His name appears in the ministerial lists of the Brethren Family Almanacs, and his address is given as Purgittsville. They lived two or three miles up the Stringtown Road east of Route 220." Mary E. Pugh, Hampshire County Public Library, reports that there is one will at our courthouse of a Patrick Fleming 1838. I have been looking for the parents of JANE FLEMING. She married JOSEPH CHAPMAN on 19 May 1803 in the Independent Congregational [Circular] Church in Charleston SC. I found no further FLEMING info in the published records of this church. Joseph and Jane Chapman's four known children -all baptised in the same church - were Joseph Chapman baptized in 1805 Sarah Chapman bapt in 1806 Samuel Chapman bapt born in 1808 [my ancestor] Perry Emanuel Chapmen bapt with his brother Samuel born in 1813 Joseph JR and Sarah apparently died young. Samuel and Perry were pilots out of Charleston. I suspect that Joseph Chapman was a descendant of the GILES CHAPMAN family of Newberry Co SC. Joseph Chapman SR died after 1816 when he was listed in the Charleston City Directory and before January 1821 when Jane as his executorix sued one William Burnet After Joseph Chapmen's death JANE FLEMING CHAPMAN married PETER PORTER. I welcome any ones help or suggestions. Ed T of PGH
Phil - I have no information regarding my Flemings in County Cork. The arrival in New Orleans of Francis James is close to that of your Michael. However, Francis James came directly from Ireland and not via any other U.S. city. Yes, I'm assuming they were devout Catholics, as later generations were predominantly so. Sorry I have no other information for you, but will keep your names in mind as I continue. Lynn King
