    1. Census Poem
    2. Meyer Family
    3. It was the first day of census, and all through the land each pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride, his book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there, toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face and wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water as they sat at the table, and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"--- was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such, they could read some ... and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done so he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear, "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me as we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow as we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day that the entries they made would affect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel and the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart through their blood in our veins and their voices in our hearts.

    1. Laura Fleming
    2. Meyer Family
    3. Hi! I just signed up with this list. I am desparately looking for the family of my great-grandmother, Laura FLEMING. She was born 19 Jan 1854 (according to her headstone) and she was supposedly born in Texas. She was married in 1882 to Louis (Luke) DODSON, probably Texas. They had a daughter two years later. Effie Lewis DOTSON was born 1 Jun 1884. She died 17 Nov 1886 in Henderson, Rusk, TX. Right after the daughter died, they had a son, my grandfather. Louis Fleming DOTSON was born 13 Dec 1886 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches, TX. Then Laura died 28 Jul 1894 in Henderson, Rusk, TX. There is a strong possibility that she is the daughter of Laird FLEMING of Panola County, TX, but I have not been able to prove a connection yet. Anyone recognize her? Charlotte M. 3. Hi All, Does any have or have any idea where I might purchase the book entitled, FLEMING FAMILY HISTORY written by J. Montgomery Seavers. It was published in 1929. I am a descendant of Boaz Fleming, b. Kent Co. DE in 1758. He married Elizabeth Hutchinson and they moved to what is now Marion Co., WV My husband is descended from John Fleming b. 1744 in MD, Married Ann Hopkins. They later lived in PA and then what is now WV. I'm sure these two families are related but can't prove it. Would love to exchange information on either of these Fleming lines. Thanks much. Charlotte Fleming

    3. Susan, I haven't actually done any Fleming research, but my wife is from a Fleming line. Archibald and Sarah Fleming had at least 10 children, John was among the oldest. Eleanor's parents were William Penquite, Sr. and Keziah Bradfield. Eleanor was apparently one of nine children. Big families, huh? This information comes from a Virginia researcher who prepared a descendants chart of Archibald and Sarah Fleming for a family reunion in Iowa last year. I believe he would be willing to share this with you if you like. I will contact him and ask if it's allright to have you contact him. It appears that you may have some McArter information which he may need. All I know about him is that he died in 1925 and was probably in his thirties. >> Hello Beth, Thanks so much for your message. It's so good to find another Fleming researcher. We are very scarce! I suggest that you join the Fleming- [email protected] mail list. It might be a tremendous help. The information that you have on your g-grandfather is quite enough....just send for his death certificate and you will have both his parents names. The marriage certificate will give you both their parents names. Are you in Pitt Co.? The Moye name is very familiar to me. I can remember my grandmother (Annie Washington) speaking of that family name. Also I believe that a Moye signed the guest book at her funeral. We may be cousins, Who knows...
