    3. Erin go Bragh!!! Am forwarding my line of FLEMING. As you can see I haven't found some important info as yet. Any one out there knows about this family please contact me directly. [email protected] Thank you and have a fine day. Also researching: BENVIE, DOUGLAS, DWYER, FLEMING, MCCORMACK, MCLAUGHLIN, MERCER, MUNRO, O'DONNELL, ORMAND, TAYLOR, YOUNG Subject: FLEMING family of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, Ireland Information on my maternal gg/g grandparents: In Feb. 1996, I received info from the Western Health Board, Community Care Offices of Roscommom that there were no birth records before 1864 for Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommom. (Does anyone know the Catholic church in the area?) In the same letter: (my ggrandfather) James FLEMING death notice 10th January, 1900 (no papers only info) (my ggrandmother) Mary O'DONNELL FLEMING could not be located. Neither could they supply me with their birth dates or the record of their marriage. (Where can I find this info?) Their children: 1. (my grandmother) Margaret FLEMING (Perhaps she was born prior to 1864 they told me) According to her death (August 4, 1944) certificate from Kings County, Brooklyn, New York. She was born November 17, 1863 in Ballaghaderreen, Ireland. She attended a culinary school in Brighton, England (name?) circa 1878? She didn't leave Ireland because of the famine. She married William Young BENVIE (Perth, Scotland) circa (1887-1890) in Syracuse, NY. He was a US Customs Officier and was stationed in Malone, NY. He had relatives (TAYLOR, YOUNG, DOUGLAS, MUNRO-all from Scotland ) in the Onondaga Counties of New York. I found that the only BENVIE surname listed, left Scotland to CANADA. Their children: 1.Mary Francis Benvie (my mother) m. Emmett R. Mercer (Nov. 27, 1927) one child: Moira Mercer m. Paul Joseph McLaughlin (Aug. 3,1968) three children: Mary Francis McLaughlin Kevin Emmett McLaughlin Paul James McLaughlin 2. George Young Benvie 3. James Fleming Benvie 2. Mary FLEMING birth date: 18th July, 1866 3. Catherine FLEMING birth date: 30th November, 1869 ? 4. James or John FLEMING (Perhaps he was born prior to 1864) Found an old postcard sent to my grandmother: telling her to have a good time while visiting Ireland. postmark Jy 20 10 ( I assume this means 1910) MM Benvie Pound Street Ballaghaderreen, C/o Mayo (this was before the town became a part of Ct. Roscommon) Ireland Also another card from my grandfather: William Young Benvie to my gmother Mrs. W. Y. Benvie 18 Jefferson Ave., Brooklyn, NY USA from 25 London, SW, Edinburgh saying that he had found his mother v. frail, but in pretty good health. dated Sept. 1st, 1908

I doubt if any of your Somerset house notes would help me as she was born in 1822, 15 years before civil registration started. I am trying to find out more on her father Henry a paper maker. All I can tell you is that Jane was born in Durham City abt 1822 and died in Sacriston, Co. Durham 1906 widow of My GG Grandfather Joseph Musgrove. I will have to get hold of the Durham city parish records at some stage to get more info, unless someone out there has already done it Steve

My first suggestion is that instead of telling me what information you have, give me the information. Enter the equivalent to a family group sheet with biographical sketches or whatever so it will be in my database. Secondly, send it to the list instead of to me. Everybody out there has a different set of files that you can check. Thirdly, although your concentration is your line, in your research, you find all sorts of stuff that is about other lines than yours that you hang onto for some reason or other, send that out as well as your own data (separate messages, please, we don't want your entire database in one letter.) This gives you the opportunity to become a resourse that other researchers are aware of and when they come across stuff of interest to you, they'll recognize it and send it to you. Fourthly, when you do have data on a place and time, it can be worth your while to do exhaustive research on the area, get to know everyone of your surname in the county, and you may find that people you've ignored because the're not your particular person may be their entire family, and add another couple generations to what you know. Fifthly, go beyond the vital stats. Churches, particularly, can be immensly rich resourses, a lot of the old ones kept detailed record, thanks to Henry the VIII and the Church of England. Being a State Church, you had to prove your allegiance by demonstrating your religion. Events were recorded so you could point to the record and say you did this. This carried over to the dissident churches, out of habit, I suppose, Quakers being the exemplar case. Sixth, have fun doing it. Learn stuff, go places, meet people, examine artifacts. Good luck, Bill [email protected]

    1. James Fleming
    2. William Gehling
    3. Hi, One of the things about reworking a database is that new things come together. One of these is that there were 2 James Flemings in the 1784 Tax List, one in the area that became Hardy Co. in 1786. There are also a few land grants to James Fleming in Hardy Co. These are this other James Fleming, not the James Fleming of Patterson Cr., Harrison Co. and Taylor Co. Records that can be associated with this James are: 1782 Hampshire Co. Tax List, James Fleming, with 3 in family living in what is now Hardy Co. 1784 Hampshire Co. Tax List, James Fleming, with 4 in family living south of the Capon Bridge area in the area that overlaps with Hardy. 23 Nov 1789, James Fleming, 140 acres surveyed 17 Oct 1787 in Hardy Co. on Lunies Cr., New Cr. Mt., Little Mt. 20 Apr 1797, David Bagley, 45 acres surveyed 21 Mar 1794 in Hardy Co. adj. his own land bought of Fleming. T.W. 615, 13 Sep 1794. (I don't know what T.W. means, maybe something like Title Warrant) This is all I have on this guy, neither antecedents nor descendants. All that's inferable is that he had to have been born before 1761 to have been taxable in 1782. Bill [email protected]

    3. Hi, I filled my harddrive and kept entering data unaware and corrupted my database. I've brought up my last back-up, which is a year old, and have been salvaging data entered between the time the back-up was made and my files got corrupted that is in the portion of the database that remains uncorrupted, and I've been entering the land grants for Hampshire county and I noticed that James, Patrick, and John seem to be trading around in the same vicinity, Mill Creek, Patterson Creek, Tear Coat Creek and Crooked Run, all off the South Branch of the Potomac and the South Branch Manor. I have no information on Patrick's parentage, but I'm guessing that he is a son of James. John may be more than one person. The later dates may be Patrick's son, who cannot be the John of the earlier dates because he wasn't born. My John may be the one in the earlier dates, but cannot be the one in the later dates because he moved to Ohio and Indiana and died before the last of them. If the earlier dates are my John, his father, also reputedly named John, would have been a contemporary of James and probably a younger brother, if not an error in transmission and a misidentification of James, himself. What this is leading to, is that James is reportedly from Frederick Co., DE and was commissioned in the Maryland Line. Was there a John in the DE and/or MD records contemporary with James, probably a younger brother? I've only looked at the VA records for my John. Bill [email protected]
