Hi! Fellow list members, Here is my mystery Fleming family member: Nancy Fleming, born 1808 in or near Romney, Hampshire Co, VA (now WV), died March 30, 1848 in Putnamville, Putnam Co, IN. Married to Henry Easter (b. Sep 3, 1800) on April 12, 1825 in Romney. Mother of nine children: George, Joseph, Elizabeth, John, Obanion, Theodore, Emanuel, Clarisa & William. Our family knows nothing further about Nancy than what you read here other than her is in Putnamville and many of us have visited it. She lived a short life, must have worked like a dog all of it and we can't even find her parents. Russ Ehler, Genealogist for the Wattje Wattjes Ihler Family in the USA P.S. I am descended from Theodore Easter whose daughter Alice married Wattje's son Wattie.

Found my GGgrandmother Mary FLEMING in the 1881 census in Dundee SCT at 55 Milns E Wynd. She is listed as Widowed, 48 yrs old, and born in Ireland. Listed also were her children who were all born in Ireland: Thomas, age 23, Peter 17, Margaret 14, and Patrick 11. LOOKING for any info on Mary, her husband, birthplace, or parents/in-laws. We believe that her husband worked on the railroad in Ireland and was one of 7 brothers. Peter FLEMING (b. 1864, IRL) is my Ggrandfather. He married Grace BARR (b.1862, Dundee,SCT). Children were Peter, Michael (b.1893), Patrick, and Thomas, all born in Dundee. This Peter FLEMING had a daughter Ann (who emigrated to Canada), and a son Peter (who served in the 6th Bn., Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), and who died aged 25 on Wednesday, 17th, May 1944 and is buried at Naples War Cemetery, Italy. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists his parents as Peter and Mary Fleming, of Dundee. Michael FLEMING (b.1893) is my grandfather. He married Mary Baillie (b.1890, Dundee). Children were Ann, Michael, Peter, Andrew, Mary, and Thomas. Patrick FLEMING (b.1870, IRL), and found at age 11 in the 1881 census in Dundee emigrated to Paterson, NJ, USA. Charles, the name Lilias interests me in that I have a Margaret FLEMING born ?Kirkliston ?1800 who married Robert BROTHERSTON 1823 Dalmeny (and Corstorphine) naming patterns would suggest that mothers (FLEEMING/FLEMING) name was Lilias and fathers name was James, although a few years early for your James this was the first time the name Lilias was used for the BROTHERSTONS. I'm not sure how common the name Lilias was early 1800 or if someone/some event had made the name popular at the time but a coincidence that can't be passed without comment. Interestingly, in that parish, there are two Wm Flockharts born within a year of each other, and two Margaret Hendersons born within a year of each other, and two marriages of Wm F to Marg H, again, within a year of each other. Our first known Fleming was a Benedictine Monk from Flanders and was known as William le Bec. In the year 1066, he went with Duke William of Normandy as part of his army to England to assist the Duke in gaining the crown of England. Duke William was crowned the King of England on Christmas day in 1066. William le Becwas given a Barony and a large area of land to govern by King William. William le Bec was soon known as William le Flandrensis, then changed to le Flemyng, then to le Fleming and finally to Fleming. All of this is supposed to mean, William the Man >From Flanders. He had a son, Richard le Fleming who was granted the Barony of Slane and other estates in County Meath, Ireland. As Loards of Slane, the Flemings held sway in Meath until the end of the 17th century. The Flemings became gaelicized and exerted their efforts to repel later invaders. The Flemings supported the Stuart cause. When King Charles Stuart was executed and Oliver Cromwell assumed leadership in England by military force, the Flemings and others who were royalists, were stripped of their lands and titles in the confiscations that followed the Broken Treaty of Limerick. Thomas Fleming (1593-1666), eldest son to the Baron of Slane was the Archbishop of Dublin. Father Patrick Fleming (1599-1666) was a noted Franciscan Scholar. Arthur Fleming(1610-1680) the youngest son of the Baron of Slane, migrated to Eastern Canada about 1650 and is burried in the Province of Quebec. A son of Arthur's moved from canada to what is now known as the state of Vermont. One of his son's was William Fleming(1700-1760) and he had a son named Charles(1730-1800) . Charles had a son named Victor (1755-1845) and he married a girl named Metcalf and had five children. Ira Nelson Fleming (1830=1895) one of their five children was my great grandfather. Ira moved to Delaware County, Iowa and settled near Manchester. Ira had three marriages, the first to Eleanor Rowe, then to Samantha Tony (my great grandmother) and to Fanny Dixon. Ira and Samantha had four children, one of which was my grandfather, Charles Arthur Fleming (1861-1907). Charles married in 1883, my grandmother, Minerva Etheline Ford (1866-1935) of Atlanta, Macon County, Missouri and had eight children. My father, Paul Victor Fleming (1905-1983) was the youngest of eight children. They settled in Waterloo, Iowa. My father married my mother, Ruth Schmeling of Milwaukee, WI. Little is known of the several generations of the Fleming Family after arriving in Vermont up until our present family, however some moved to New York, some to Massachusettes, some to Ohio, some to Pennsyvania and many to Kentucky and Georiga. All of this was written by my father, Paul, sometime ago. He also wrote, about the year 1085, much of the land of Flanders was flooded by the North Sea, causing many people to migrate to Scotland and on to Ireland and England. These people too were called Fleming. The Flemings of Scotland became part of the Murray Clan. The town of Kirkaldy, in Fifeshire, on the Firth of Forth, near Edinburg, Scotland was inhabited almost entirely by people named Fleming. Some Flemings migrated to Germany where the name is spelled, Flemming. I would like to find any details of the above and histories of our Flemings. Thank-you, Paulette (Fleming) Perez
I have a FLEMING family in Coffey county, Kansas after 1875. James Irving FLEMING, son of Benjamin and Lousia FLEMING had children Lona, Jennie, James M. and twins Benjamin I. and Leonard A. I am interested in those twins who were born 4 Nov. 1884 at Ottumwa, Coffey county, Kansas. Benjamin married an Anna McReynolds in 1905 in Coffey county. Both brothers may have worked for the railroads and may have settled in the Dakotas or Iowa. Is anyone familiar with this line? Kay
I have an Erasmus A. FLEMING who married a Jemina HOPPER (born about 1829) in Gibson county, Tn June 1852. He was son of Abraham Fleming; she is daughter of Absalum and Ollie Moore Hopper. Do not know much more about Erasmus but would like to. Another Fleming, not connected with the above family, is Jacob FLEMING ( born about 1772 possibly in NC) who married Niomey GOODWIN May 1801 in Mason county, Ky. Probably children are Noris, Benjamin, Sarah, and Catherine. They lived in Ky, and Champaign counties, Ohio. Jacob was 78 in the 1850 census and living with his son-in-law Zebulon BREVARD. Nothing much more known about Jacob. Is he familiar to anyone else? Kay
