    3. hi edgar - in that book i've got, spanish land grants in florida vol. l there is a reference to dewees creek. on page 254: Pritchard, Robert, Heirs of Unc. P 14; G&S V 427, 428 1 (E) James Hall, for himself and other heirs of Robert Pritchard, claims 16,000 acres on Julington Creek, which empties into the St. Johns River, on the east side about 50 miles from its mouth, bounded on the north by Gunby's lands, on the other sides by vacant lands, according to George J.F. Clarke's plat of 7/20/1819, a concession of Governor White, 1010/1803, and confirmed to the heirs of Robert Pritchard by Governor Coppinger, 6/5/1818. They are in legal possession. (The substance of abstracts 2 to 4 is taken from the customary Murphy translation, the originals -- usually much more legible -- being missing.) "2 (E) (Translation.) James Hall in the name of his wife, Leonor Plummer, states that in the "past year of 1803" the government granted to Robert Pritchard, a former husband of his said wife, a permit to build a water sawmill on Dewees Creek, which document is now misland. James Hall petitions for a copy of this paper to be put in continuance of this memorial...for the benefit of the heirs, 1/9/1818. Governor Coppinger makes the grant. "3 (E) (Translation.) Robert Pritchard, for the purpose of erecting a water sawmill on Dewees Creek near the highroad that goes into St. Nicholas, on the east side of the St. Johns River, petitions for a permit and the land necessary, 10/5/1803. Governor White refers to the petition to the commandant of engineers, 10/8/1803; Barcelo assents to whatever land the governor may think proper. Governor White grants the permit and "land necessary," Aguilar attests true copy of the document in his archives, 1/10/1818. there is considerable talk, further, about the lands and creeks around the goodbys/julington creek area, and i'm wondering if dewees creek wasn't in the area between goodbys and st. nicholas, with the "highroad" possibly being s.r. 13 (or san jose blvd.) there is a surveyor in town who has some of the old, original maps of the area from the early 1800s. i have called him, but he will be unavailable until the first part of next week. i will call him back then and let you know if he has any information on dewees creek. there are also copies of the english and spanish land grants (or there used to be) on microfilm at the jax public library. have you been able to get anyone to check on those for dewees creek? julie Edgar Taylor wrote: > Does anyone know the location of Dewees Creek?
